Talk about trying to put a sphere into a square hole.

What happened here was people responding to a picture you posted. That picture just happened to be surrounded in the boards quotes which kept moving it further and further right. Each response was different and therefore not either automated or flooding. As soon as the photo was deleted from the hosting site and expired from their cache the thread size returned to normal.

The moderators didn't need to do anything since it was neither an automated posting attack or a flooding attack.

Ageless's response about bringing it on yourself was the same reaction I had when I first looked at what people were complaining about. Thread owner posted a picture and several people just posted responses to it.

The context missing from the quoted thread above is at the time that happened a person was running a program they wrote to post a new message a couple of times a second. Another variation of that kind of thing is creating a whole new thread a couple of times a second. Hence automated posting and flooding. You know them becuase generally they same the same thing over and over again.

As far as the pictures front goes, the practice of posting 2000x2000 pixel images that tie up the download pipe is just plain wrong. That was not the case here.

If you, the thread owner, post a picture and people quote it and all of a sudden you don't like it. That is just too bad.

The mods should only have to step in to deal with people who may be spamming the thread with images that look the same but are from a different URL.

Gotcha. Understand. Thanks.

There we go!

Now then, to put it back up:

Today's Factoid is:

Q: What is the world's widest residential building?

I've got the funniest feeling of deja vu...

What you're doing...adding the wide border right of the pic to flood this thread isn't all that funny Es...it's a PITA to other users.

Rom made himself pretty clear about this, I thought.

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=30781

Since you're still within your Edit hour limit, I'd appreciate it if you removed your widened version of my pic, which I've already had to remove even in it's small version.

Thank you kindly.

Why dont you check all the pictures you have posted in this thread Beets you have one alone that is over 900 pixels and two more that are over 700 pixels
and so on.

Well Cap'n, I've now done that. I removed the two mountain shop pics and resized the starting bar pic. Thanks for your help!

(Speaking of pics, may I politely bump you on the ones you promised to send me? Thanks a lot, Cap'n.)

Edit: I've found it! It's not the pics: it's the Disclaimer! Can I get some help on this?

I have complied with your request to remove the link to your
oversized photo. Yet the window is still stretched.......

So I see. Thank you kindly, John.

The window is still stretched on account of Ageless/Cap'n not having removed Es99's copy of the pic. And you may be quite right about it being my (2nd) pic that I tried to put up a dozen posts ago having been inadvertantly oversized. While I'm sure that Cap'n is right when he says that the original version was 574 pixels wide, I put up the second version of it in a hurry and may have made a mistake about keeping it to the same size as the original.

At any rate, Es99's pic is now the one remaining stretch to the window, from what I can tell.

Maybe you bring it onto yourself. But ok, people, please stop disrupting this thread.

This thread is already disrupted, Ageless, because the two pics: by Es99, and just now, by John Hunt, have already flood-stretched the window way wider than it should be. Would you kindly delete these posts?

We cross-posted btw, I can see. I didn't see your post above until after I had posted my last one.

My pic is the same width as yours - see post no 321584.......

The pic may be the same, but the "border" is wider. Perhaps that was indadvertant. When I posted my original pic, the window was NOT widened by it.

Apologies , sir. So I should not have replied and included your photo......

Accepted. But since your post with the pic was entered on 22:36:33, it seems that you are still within your hour to edit. Could you remove the link for the pic on your post, Sir? Thank you kindly.

And will you please, then, in future, ensure that windows will not become widened if someone replies to your posts....

I will certainly do my best to keep my pictures within reasonable size limits. But I cannot 'ensure' the size of windows. If people include quotes of eight or nine other quotes, the size of the window necessarily broadens, because of the blue lines. That's why I understand it to be poor netiquette to include more than one or two quotes.

Cordially,

Beets.

To avoid this problem arising again,
would it be possible to have a ruling
on the size of photos allowed in posts
please. Also, the number of replies allowed
to ensure that windows do not become
stretched.........

It dosnt matter John really. If you viewing on a 12inch monitor
then maybe but in your preferences you can display pictures as links.

I have no desire to add anyone to my ignore list, Ageless.

I have no desire reading your complaints all the time, yet here I am giving you an option.
And plenty of other people post pics as pics, not as links, and I'd like to have the same opportunity to do so as they do.

The option in your preferences makes of all pictures posted as pictures a link. Want to see it? Click the link. That way threads don't stretch, no matter how big the picture is.

I don't moderate the Cafe much as it is anyway. That's CA's turf. Now, are you continuing to whine and point fingers at others or are you going to continue to post like a grown up? Having seen some of your comments in other threads... They aren't deleted either, are they? We're trying to let everyone have fun here again. So go make fun. That's an order. :)

My pic is da nada..gone...not on photobucket. You should be seeing no pic at all of it right now. Just as a point of information.

Your Picture at the beginning of this thread is 700 pixels wide.
The pic you posted was 541px wide.
Esme photo is the same.

Ahhh! Thanks for your assistance on this, Cap'n! I'll now delete the picture at the beginning of this thread, and hopefully you're right and the window will shrink to a normal size.

Where is Angus when you need him? Go to your forum preferences and check "show images as links". Then add anyone you want to your ignore list. Save the changes.

I have no desire to add anyone to my ignore list, Ageless. And plenty of other people post pics as pics, not as links, and I'd like to have the same opportunity to do so as they do.

Therefore, I would kindly ask you again to remove either those two posts by Es and John Hunt, or edit out the photobucket links in their posts.

Thank you so much.
