Awhile back a member suggested I start using "crunch3r"

Seems my computer is taking longer to process wu in the last few days. (In fact, the last three days, no wu processed. I've got 14 wu waiting to process.)

I'm ready to try "crunch3r"

- Only need to find out how to use it, & where to download it.

Looking for pointers from those in the know.

Thanks

Start with this thread.

Look at his site, and read the follow-up discussion.

If you get stuck, ask again - someone else will jump in (not me, I'm off to bed!)

Is the reason they are taking longer now because you are downloading Seti Enhanced?

Look at his Results. He was running stock 4.18, claiming low 40's credit (normal for AMD XP's) and Granted low 30's. Has been automatically updated, completed one Enhanced WU taking about four times longer and claimed the normal 64 range.

Advice.

Leave it like it is for now.

There is little advantage to using Crunch3r optimizations right now for you. And it is likely there will be one or more automatic updates within the next month or so. If you switch to Crunch3r now, there is now only about a 20% advantage and you have to make the changes manually yourself. Best to wait, follow the forums for awhile, let the automatic update(s) happen and let things setting out with both the new Enhanced application and the new BOINC Core Client. Then decide.

Thanks for the info.

I've updated to 5.13

My wu's show some scheduled to take up to 20 hours to complete ? I do not remember them taking that long in the past.

Am I missing something ? What is going on, did my computer get slow all be itself ?

In another post, I see where some say to update the app_info.xml file. I can not find this file.

Any help is welcome.

OK, let's take this a step at a time.

You've updated BOINC to version 5.2.13 - no harm in that, but it's nothing really to do with Crunch3r. BOINC is the management/control interface for all sorts of projects - this one, SETI, and lots of others.

SETI has recently introduced a new science application which does all the actual hard work for this project. This science app, which they call "enhanced" looks in more detail at the raw incoming astronomical data, so it can take a lot longer. You will have been automatically issued with this new scince app, and the work units to go with it: that's why (some of) the work on your machine is expected to take up to 20 hours. It's not running slower: it's doing more work, more thoroughly, at the same speed.

NB depending on the particular set of astronomical data you're looking at, and how it was collected, it can be more or less difficult to do this thorough examination, so you will see different time estimates.

The new science app you've got from SETI is 'one size fits all' - it's designed to work on any and every Windows computer.

Crunch3r - the subject of your initial question - has produced a range of specialised science applications which take advantage of the extra features of newer computer CPUs. Collectively, these are known as "optimised" applications: if you get the right one for your particular computer, and use it properly, it will speed up your work by 20% - 30% or so.

But you will have to do some work yourself. Only read on if you are prepared to take the time and trouble to understand what you're doing, and take care to do it right.

The references that follow are all to Crunch3r's SETI Enhanced page for Windows.

1) Download and run CPU-Z (top link on the page) to find out exactly what your CPU is capable of. You're looking for a line which includes some (or all) of MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3.

2) Once you know what it can do, download the first "latest application" that you come to, that matches what you found out about your CPU.

3) Also, download the app_info.xml file from the 'downloaded here' link just above the first CPU logo on the page.

4) If you still have any SETI workunits described as 'setiathome 4.18', go to Crunch3r's SETI standard page for Windows and download, again, the "latest application" for your CPU.

Now you've got all you need.

Stop BOINC (exit the application completely, don't just let it minimise to the system tray).

Find your BOINC folder (usually C:\\Program Files\\BOINC).

Back up your entire BOINC folder.

Find the setiathome.berkeley.edu folder in the projects folder in BOINC.

Unzip the enhanced application you got from Crunch3r. Put the .exe file in the setiathome.berkeley.edu folder.

Unzip the xml file you got from Crunch3r. Put the .xml file in the setiathome.berkeley.edu folder.

Unzip the standard application (if any) you got from Crunch3r. Put the .exe and .pdb files (only - not this .xml file) in the setiathome.berkeley.edu folder.

Restart BOINC, and keep your fingers crossed!

Now you're running the whole show yourself, you won't get any more automatic program updates from SETI. At some point in the future, you'll stop getting new workunits from SETI, because they will have moved on to 5.13, 5.14 etc., and you won't have. Keep an eye on these boards, and on Crunch3r's site, for help on what to do when - not if - that happens.

Hi CoolBlue!

Thank you for this entertaining thread in Number crunching forum and good luck in trying "Crunch3r" ! :)

too interesting to be true...I bet he will be pleased.

EDIT: If I am to talk about "Crunch3r", he is trying to build optimized crunchers for FreeBSD today.
