I used to run seti a lot a year or so ago and then stopped. I recently upgraded my PC, went from an Athlon 64 3500+ to a new Athlon 64 X2 4400+. Everything runs fine, seems very much faster to me, all my benchmarks show a much faster computer. However, though I can't remember my old seti stats, I believe it is taking WAY too long to complete work now. It is taking on average about 7 hours for it to complete one. I'm running the latest Boinc Manager, have both cores working so two are running at once, takes about 7 hours for two to get done. This seems really long, I seem to remember it only taking about 2 hours for my old processor to complete one. Any ideas what could be wrong? |

That's because Seti is transtioning into Seti Enhanced: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_enhanced.php Seti Enhanced WUs take longer on average than the older BOINC Seti WUs. |

Still is 7hrs normal for a processor like this? Just seems so slow to me, hardly worth crunching if it's now only going to do a few WU a day. Used to be able to do about 12 WU or more a day with my old processor, now even with dual core it will be down about half that, around 6-7 a day. |

Seti Enhanced was released to do more science per result and to relieve the backend. Instead of having to release over a million results per day, they try to release less results. So these ones run a tad slower, yet digging in deeper into the WU and getting out more data. SE's result lengths (the time they run) depend on the Angle Range of the result. Very low ARs run long, low ARs run faster, high ARs run extremely short. And so all results also have their own deadline. See here for a list. |

Yes but each work unit is worth more credit and it performs a much more detailed analysis of signals. So yes it is just as "worth it" as it was before. I'm running a climateprediction.net work unit on a 4400+. It has been running for 420 hours and is 18% done. The length of a work unit doesn't really matter to BOINC. :) A member of The Knights Who Say NI! For rankings, history graphs and more, check out: My BOINC stats site |

7 hours should be ok..i have x2 3800+ overclocked from 2.0 to 2.6GHz and it takes about 5-5.5 hours/WU (but with crunch3rs 5.12 app. it takes me about 2.5 hours/WU).. |

I'm running a stock (no OC) X2 4200 w/ Crunch3r's 5.12 app and I'm chewing through Enhanced WUs in 3.5 to 4 hours. For 4.18 WUs about 45 to 55 mins. |

I'm running a stock (no OC) X2 4200 w/ Crunch3r's 5.12 app and I'm chewing through Enhanced WUs in 3.5 to 4 hours. For 4.18 WUs about 45 to 55 mins. Yours and my processor are about the same, yet mine is taking way longer, not sure why. The enhanced WU take anywhere from 7-8 hours to complete, the 4.18 are too varied to really average right now, some take 2 hours, some 15 mins. All the other benchmarks I had run on my computer after I upgraded seemed pretty good, so I really don't know what the problem could be. I'm running WinXP, the latest boinc manager, I have everything else turned off on the computer making sure nothing else is taking up processor resources. The hottest my processor gets is about 120F, just depends on how warm or cool it is in my house, I have a fairly good heat pipe cooling system on it, usually idle around 90F. Anyone have any idea what could be wrong, what could be slowing things down? What is the Crunch3r app everyone is talking about? Is it something I can use on windows? I started seti on and off years ago with classic, and really since the boinc transition it turned me off to it all so I had left a while, now coming back I seem to be in the middle of yet another transition, so it's hard for me to know what's going on, how my computer should stack up, and how to get my current computer tweaked to crunch better. Full specs of my computer are here for those interested. http://homepage.mac.com/phlash65/ShuttleStats/ I'd appreciate any help I could get to assist in tweaking my computer to crunch faster. |

Follow this link to Crunch3r's website http://calbe.dw70.de/setiew.html Download either the SSE2 or SSE3 app for Athlon 64. I'm using the SSE3 set, it's a little faster than the SSE2 for me. When you've downloaded the app, stick the 5.12.exe in the BIONIC project folder, it should replace the 5.12 app that you automatically downloaded from SETI. By switching to the 5.12 app from Crunch3r your Enhanced WU times should come down to the 3 to 4 hour range. |
