About running apps when idle, have you tried setting up a 'Scheduled task'? They might run the same way that the screen savers do, in which case this idea would not help. Very good idea; I like it! But it didn't work. :-( Tried it on XP home and that crappy piece of software doesn't work correct with users anyways. When using the 'default' user, it demands a password, but there is none. When using another user, it simply fails. <sigh> jacQues |

In setting up a scheduled task, one on the options is to 'run when idle'. Then in the 'Settings' tab, check the 'Stop task if computer ceases to be idle'. You would actual schedule BOINC.exe to run this way. If you decied to try this, make sure you are NOT running as a service. The disadvange of this is if you are using 'leave in memmory', Since this procedure will actually stop BOINC, and not just the client app, all applications will be removed from memory. Uninstalling BOINC and reinstalling it didn't work either. So given that it was a clean install of Windows (w/ghosting), it must have been a stuck WU. SETI, LHC and Einstein were on it. But there have been no LHC WU's for a while. After uninstalling, removing the entire BOINC folder, reinstalling and attaching to the projects everything works fine again. So it must have been a SETI or Einstein problem. Weird one though. jacQues |

Several things...1st version 4.19 is soon going to be abandoned and you will no longer be able to use it. You MAY want to think of finding a way around that issue. Second how many units are in your cache? If the answer is not many, then you want to consider dettaching and then reattaching. This will dump all units in your cache, don't worry about the units someone else will crunch them. But it MAY solve the current problems. The error code is not in the list of Boinc error codes though, they can be found here: http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=Error_Code The computer is a 1.8GHz with 512MB RAM. It happens when booting Windows XP home when nothing is running. I ghosted it to make sure it isn't software related; no help. BOINC runs on a separate partition to save the work when ghosting. I don't know how many units there are as it closes itself. Manually clicking BOINCGUI has the same effect (it starts; shows the icon; but closes immediately; the icon disappears when hovering over it with the mouse). So I cannot reset any projects either, only manually (not sure how though). Also, the problem I have with newer version is this: - I cannot run BOINC in "always run" mode because it slows down the games a lot. - Newer BOINC versions (and indeed any screensaver) will not detect idle time because of SysGuard. It simply never starts crunching. - SysGuard is locking software that MUST be on the computer. - Version 4.19 *does* detect idle time and crunches. So there was a change somewhere along the line. - There are a total of 18 computers on 3 locations with this setup. Some with Windows 98SE, most with Windows XP. If a new BOINC version is forced and it still doesn't work with SysGuard - end of BOINC for us :-( jacQues |

What else does the machine do when it is crunching? How much memory does it have? How fast is it?

Using version 4.19 on 6 computers. One of them gives the error below. Its this version or no BOINC, since SysGuard will prevent newer BOINC versions from running when idle. Also always running is no option, because it slows down the games way too much (probably memory related, but still, no option). Did a virus scan; nothing found. Tried copying boincgui.exe from another computer; no change. I figure a WU got stuck or something, but how do I fix it? After starting BOINC it shows up in the taskbar but as soon as I hover the mouse over it it disappears. ***UNHANDLED EXCEPTION**** Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x7C901010 read attempt to address 0x00000034 1: 05/09/06 12:13:09 1: SymGetLineFromAddr(): GetLastError = 126 jacQues |
