Man this is BS! This is not fun anymore. Crunch3r, I've tried to be on top of everything you've released. I've even had my instructions posted on your site. SETI introduced to the masses an unproved BETA app and the only thing that has kept me going is waiting on your new releases. I think it may be time for me to pull a few plugs and follow suit.

I´m very sorry for crunch3r. He really did a great job! ;(
I´m not one of the big crunchers, and i´m relative new to SETI and BOINC, but i took my decision to the BS which is going on here and i detached from SETI and SETI Beta with my computers... I won´t crunch for a project with such ignorant people...
Sorry for the bad english...

I agree with your comments regarding the main SETI, but I don't know if you're aware of it but Crunch3r (under the name TMR - won't try to spell it out and insult him) is still active in BETA. The people there still have respect for volunteers.

As Crunch3r said - So long and thanks for the fish ;-)

I agree with you in a sense Sir Ulli, but at the same time I have to dis-agree. Someone posted elsewhere that they are looking into the problem. Yes, it would be nice to get something from ADMIN about this, but obviously if they haven't come here they are probably working on fixes.

No one can stop anyone from leaving Seti. I agree that its bad the way people are treated here. Look what happend to Paul Buck. Prime example. But, honestly, just because ADMIN comes in here, does anyone really thing all these people who are leaving will come back? They made their choice. No one is twisting anyones arms around here to stay.

Well, I too have had enough. On Monday/Tuesday next week, it'll be the first time in almost exactly 7 years that I don't have SETI@home running on a PC somewhere. May not be permanent, but I'm gone until the problems and bad feeling around here are dealt with in some appropriate manner. Those who use my stats site ( http://www.teamocuk.com ), fear not - the stats are going nowhere, although at some point I may have to ask for donations to help cover the $100/mo running costs.
Stats site - http://www.teamocuk.co.uk - still alive and (just about) kicking.

Just wanted to add my sorrow at the news of crunch3r's leaving. His Apps helped my poor slow old computer keep up and I could play with the big boys. He will be sorely missed. Thank you Crunch3r for all you did for us.

Hello,

It's not quite easy for me to write this, to honest to you all i'm writing this now with a tear running from my eye.

It's been a fantastic time here for quite a while, since things have changed for the bad.

That's why i'm taking the consequences and have to say god bye to you all.

Take care of yourself and keep on crunching.

Good by SETI.

I am saddened to see you go Crunch3r. You have helped S@H produce more results per machine and helped us without the newest equipment be productive. I thank you for all you have done. I really hope that you get an apology from the responsible parties.

As for me, I have some big decisions to make about my continued paticipation in this project.

Someone posted elsewhere that they are looking into the problem. Yes, it would be nice to get something from ADMIN about this, but obviously if they haven't come here they are probably working on fixes.

That someone was Eric Korpela, not an admin, but the developer of the Seti Enhanced application.

The only admins available are now at Arecibo installing the new hardware.
Dr. Anderson isn't even an admin here. Go find his post from early on here. His nick is david (with small d) and he's only posting.

No one can stop anyone from leaving Seti. I agree that its bad the way people are treated here. Look what happend to Paul Buck. Prime example.

Paul didn't leave because of the way he was treated here (on these forums). It was an overall picture, between the forums here, the forums everywhere and that way problems were handled in BOINC.

All of the problems he saw back in Boinc Beta became reality this year in Seti & other projects. If you want to blame anyone, blame Dr. Anderson. (the same person you want to email all the time, Sir Ulli!)

A lot of trouble in these forums could've been solved already, if Dr. Anderson had given it an option to be. Active moderation from day one, for instance.
Some rules for creating other crunchers for Seti.

Yet since he didn't... we're all in it here together.

So who are you going to blame and flame the next time?

:) Me of course. :)

I know that one thing that Paul Buck and I pretty much agreed on was the potential problems that could arise by the open availability of the Seti cruncher source code.

(as far as I know, Seti is still the only BOINC project that allows availability of the cruncher code - others make it available to limited people for specific purposes).

I've not used the crunch3r apps, but it seems that he did some really good things, and has proved his value. I would really like to see his stuff as "standard clients"!

A suggestion for the future, to prevent things like what's happening now from happening again:

1) go by the model of other projects and only make cruncher code available on a real "as needed" basis (like Einstein).

2) when someone has an improvement (like crunch3r), feed the changes back to UCB, and let the project release the changed app to the world. That way, if a problem does arise, the project can take the heat and make the correction (in conjunction with the person that fed in the change), and everyone gets the update by way of normal processing. (again, this seems to be the way that Einstein will be releasing new "optimized" apps in the near future)

Just a point to ponder.. I wonder how many people are still trying to crunch with "pre enhanced" crunchers.

Unfortunately, the Standard Application has to run on any platform.

Crunch3r's Optimized Applications were compiled for specific CPUs. (You can't run an SSE3 application on a P3 system.

Here is an email from Rom to Crunch3r about these theme:

Well I don't know what happened during the Beta. I'm not involved in the
S@H weekly staff meetings. David and I touch base daily over the phone
since I'm 900 miles away and work from home.

I think several things happened in the background that required the enhanced
applications release. I think the project deemed it was deemed good enough
and we'll fix whatever the issues are in route.

Rarely do you ever get to ship the perfect product when pressures are coming
from the people funding different things.

I think it would be a great loss to the community if you left. You offer a
product that people want. You are offering what David had hoped to get into BOINC before the S@H public launch.

We, the technical community, just need to keep driving toward the ideal
solution. With the ideal solution being science packages tailored for each
processor type and the BOINC client acting as only a scheduling agent. Of
course we have the other requirement of being easy enough to use that any
scientist can setup a new project and go after compiling in the BOINC API.
Which means the core client has to contain something for calculating credit.

I know things don't move as fast as the community at large would like. But
we are making progress. I hope you'll reconsider. After this next
education curve things should mellow out and maybe we can get optimized
clients on everybody's computer by default.

----- Rom
