What service is expected to be on the ports its trying on?from the IANA Port Numbers list: yes, IANA is god when it comes to these matters (look for 1043 and you'll find BOINC), if you want to register/reserve a port for something then IANA are the people you ask (similar to reserving an IP address but a different regulatory authority) if you look at the top of the linked document, you'll see the last modified date is the 17th April 2006 (at the time this was writen) now, as you point out some reservations were made a long time ago, however the application may still be around (but prehaps not many people use it), the only possible problem is when a port usage is no longer needed, and IANA aren't told about it, however, there are lots of ports (a port number is a 16 bit value, therefore there are 2^16=65536 available ports, some are reserved for dynamic assignment (when you want to make an outward connection, so you can recieve data back) but there are plenty of others with regard to the 31416 port, when David Anderson mentioned the problems with 1043 on the dev mailing list (due to MS using it, even thou it wasn't registered to them! typical!), but he did point out that the current alternative is already registered for use by "XQoS network monitor" registered by Joe Elliott Want to search the BOINC Wiki, BOINCstats, or various BOINC forums from within firefox? Tony looks and sees that David A is assigned 1043. good. Now while I'm here, I'll look at 31416 and see. Then I see it's NOT assigned to boinc but to someone else. so I ask you smart people about it.technically yes, BOINC, by using port 31416, is violating the same rule that MS is violating by their use of port 1043 so if BOINC is complaining about MS using 1043, then BOINC shouldn't be using 31416 lol Want to search the BOINC Wiki, BOINCstats, or various BOINC forums from within firefox? I think 31416 is in a range of less control than 1043.quite correct, the lower port numbers are "special" and are strictly controlled, important services use the lower ports (such as HTTP, DNS, FTP etc.) MS does as they damn well please and couldn't give two &^*% about IANA tbh.when has MS given a damn about any standard(s)? MS always does what it wants without giving a thought to the consequences for others, they hardly ever follow any standards except when it's in their own interest to do so (which is very rare, they ususally create their own standards to "lock you in" rather than using open standards) The truth is anyone can use any port they want and no one can do anything about it. So we see all kinds of crap on all kinds of ports and we just have to grin and bear it.indeed, and that's why IANA was founded, to have some kind of organisation to the chaos but it's still rude to use someone elses port Want to search the BOINC Wiki, BOINCstats, or various BOINC forums from within firefox? Tony, if you have multiple boinc hosts then i stuggest you give it a try, someone like yourself will really appreciate it's advantagesDo you use BoincView? by chance to monitor machines?Never, ever have, don't even know what it looks like. the main things it allows is much easier management of a "farm" by allowing you to say "run this command on all clients" or "run this command on only these clients (ones you specify)" attaching new projects is a doddle, just have to run thru the wizard once you can easilly view the current status of all your hosts on a single combined display the ability to customise the display is very good, allowing you to colourise WUs, hosts, projects, messages etc. based on your own perferences it allows you to show/hide WUs in certain states, so you could hide all your "ready to run" WUs and only show the others, there's a handy "show all" toggle option to quickly show all, then return to the previous settings with a couple of clicks see the BOINC View Installation and Set-Up Guide in the wiki (might want to view an older version, as i'm currently improving it, it was just copied from one of my posts here at SETI, and isn't up to wiki standards yet) Want to search the BOINC Wiki, BOINCstats, or various BOINC forums from within firefox? I agree, it does allow me to connect to the nine silly machine I have here at the house...oh yes, i only have 3 hosts crunching for BOINC but even still, it makes management a breeze, i rarely use the official manager anymore Want to search the BOINC Wiki, BOINCstats, or various BOINC forums from within firefox? Ian, all I'm saying is I see Joe is assigned that port and boinc is using it. It may just be for "loopback" purposes and such. Boinc was assigned 1043, but MS uses it, so boinc had to change. Ports that high are not generally "assigned" -- it's more like an official notice that someone is not playing by the rules. BOINC got 1043 because the most recent assignment before was 1042, and our friends in Redmond, WA have made those assignments impractical. |
