I get this on almost every work unit in seti and einstein. I have reset both projects and the next 4 in a row still give the same message. should I reinstall or is this a boinc bug?

We need to know what the full error message was if you want help. Your post is too cryptic to be understood. Copy about 20 line around the error message because at the moment your post says nothing to me.

Better yet, it's most probably this one: Result '(result)' exited with zero status but no 'finished' file. That's the only message that I know of to be having the add-on that if it happens a lot, to reset the project.
