Apparently, you have everything in life go perfectly everytime. You have apparently never had equipment failure, software failure, or even toothbrush failure. Stop jumping on people because you find the program a waste of time and energy, there are more here for a greater cause and they do not excel to your imaginary level of perfection so, If that is the case, please send a picture of you walking on water.

Thank you dslaved, I was beginning to think I was all alone in the way I feel about people like Pascal. Senile is too nice a description. . . he himself admits to being an "insensitive Dolt.."

But thats just it! We are not *ignoring* the anger. The complaints and issues may be justified, but the anger ISN'T. Some people are taking this totally volunteer (on our part) project WAY too seriously. Its not like BOINC/S@H being down is trashing their credit rating, killing their children, skinning their cats, wrecking their cars, burning down their homes, or otherwise affecting them in any sort of a SERIOUS way. Think about it... If a computer program running on a computer at UC Berkeley keeps crashing, or even if the computer itself suffers hardware failire and data corruption in this volunteer project makes one THAT angry, one needs to get some perspective on what is REALLY important in life.

And your response to our 'flippant' humor is to call us 'mindnumbingly stupid idiots'... Perhaps YOU need to 'GET A LIFE' too!

That depends... If you stick around, no goodbyes are necessary. If you say you are out of here in a nice way, you will get some nice goodbyes. However, if you get all bent out of shape, and have a hissy fit as you are 'leaving' (like BATTLEMATE did), prepare for the digital equivalent of 'The Finger'...

So, MajorKong, you think I was calling you mindnumbingly stupid? I reserve that label for others in this thread, but if you took offense . . .

Look, I am aware of the hardware and software problems (just barely based on the news column, but more than the news in classic SETI), but are you so blind in your support of this project that you don't hear the frustration voiced by Battlemate? Do you have such near-sightedness that you can't understand his rant--offensive as it was--as a warning of a possible contraction or even failure of the project? If you and the rest of the 'Magnificent 7' are all that's left, will this project survive?

Maybe it won't come to that, but his warning is valid.

And I do take this project seriously. I wonder about some others who say, "WOOHOO!!! More work for the rest of us!" That flies in the face of what distributed computing is trying to do.

90% of the people who leave will return.

When credit is given constantly, when machines don't crash or get starved of work, people will return. That's inevitable. All this will be forgotten. Nobody will care whether news is posted frequently or not.

That's not to say we haven't all become frustrated with the problems - but I would guess the dev team have too. I just don't see the point in dwelling on the problem when the cause has been identified, the solution arrived at and the resulting fix actioned.

Chill pills all round, eyes firmly front, thoughts on the future. That's the way the UCB team are working and thinking, we should take a lesson from them.

I hope you're right, but my observation is that a lot fewer complaints were posted this time than the last time the project collapsed. If that is an indication of fewer participants still working, then it is troubling, especially since for every one who complains there may be many more who feel the same but just remain silent and hang it up.

I myself went back to classic (shooting for 20K WU's), and at this point, I plan to return. But the chorus of gleeful idiots when someone says they are leaving is of no help--it may, in fact, push the frustrated participant over the edge so he/she will never come back, and that hurts the overall project.

I agree with you PoorBoy, I couldn't have said it better myself. I think Lobstah24 is overly excited that credit is now being awarded (sigh, not for me yet), but this is exactly my point: people who are frustrated don't need immature taunting from these message boards; it just may drive them away.

Hey guys (and gals, if any are here), let's all just take a chill pill and chill out. BATTLEMATE is frustrated with the lack of performance with BOINC. So am I, I just chose not to express it in open forum like he did. My only objection with his post was for the use of foul language. Read my post to him ID: 16528. I believe I left him a very positive reply. I didn't berate him as some of you have done, "Go ahead and leave, that will leave more WUs for us to process" in a nutshell.

I have been with the SETI project much longer than quite a number of you who leave posts here. I saw my share of "downtime" with the "Classic" version of SETI. I got frustrated with it but didn't give up because I believe in the cause. I decide to give them a chance and let them work out the bugs, which they eventually did.

BATTLEMATE, if you are reading this post, please give BOINC and SETI another chance. As I said in my reply to you: ("... it can only get better.").

To everyone else, some of us can handle frustration easier than others do. That does not mean we can berate those who cannot. Have patience with them and try to convince them to stay with the project. The more of us that stay, the closer we will get to finding E.T. I bet I will be the first one to find E.T. What do you think? Maybe BATTLEMATE will be the first, if he will stay with us and the project. Maybe one of the rest of you.... Who knows? All I know is that I will be the first! L8R....
