So basically, the only is waiting on is to fix the crashing-bugs in Seti_Enhanced-application under NT4 and on some Cyrix-cpu's or something... It seems to be the case on S@H Enhanced too.
Well regarding the equipment, it looks like that there's almost no or very little advantage to P4/HT machines compared to AMD64(single core) cpus. In case of dual core cpus it looks like in most cases it goes in favour of amd. But that may change very fast in future. Join BOINC United now! |

Ingleside, the current SETI@home takes great advantage of CPU cache relative to nearly all other programs (and thus, PCs with a large cache will outperform those with smaller caches). Do you know if this will change with the enhanced version? It would be a shame for S@h enthusiasts to build PCs just for S@h (and people are actually doing that) and thinking they are getting the most optimal equipment only to find that performance on Enhanced is a very different beast. Don't know, and won't guess... |

In order for them to put the new application here, they need to rewrite the splitters, assimilators, transitioners, and validators. I believe they already made the changes to the master database. The Transitioner together with Scheduler, Feeder, File_deleter and Db_purger is platform-independent so doesn't need to be changed at all. Splitter is already running in beta with the neccessary changes, so it's just to install a copy on the "live" project. Most notably changes for users will be the variable flops-estimates and deadlines depending on different angle-range, and of course that most wu will take significantly longer to crunch than before... Validator is AFAIK not changed at all, except is marked "Seti_Enhanced" or something instead of "Seti". In any case is already running on beta so is just to install a copy on the "live" project. There's possibly been some changes to Assimilator, but again it's already been done so it's just to install a copy on the "live" project. So basically, the only is waiting on is to fix the crashing-bugs in Seti_Enhanced-application under NT4 and on some Cyrix-cpu's or something... |

The last official word I have heard about how the changeover would happen: One splitter would be converted or added that would make enhanced workunits. These workunits would be added to the total pool of available workunits. Assignment to hosts would be basically random. However low memory hosts would only be able to get enhanced work. If you have an optimised application installed you will only be able to get regular work. After a period of testing more splitters would be switched to generate enhanced work. This would most likely be done in stages since if everyone downloaded the new app at once there would be a server log jam. I have not heard an estimated timetable for when this will happen. I am hoping for soon, I have not seen any real problems listed for the latest app. Although there will need to be changes to the splitters and all I do not think they will need to be as extensive as Pooh's post implies. It will be announced on the front page, and then I am sure people will post messages when it starts. From what I understand, old and new will be available for a while, I am unsure if you will have a choice, or how. Once the new version comes, it will automatically install, unless you are on an optimized application. In order for them to put the new application here, they need to rewrite the splitters, assimilators, transitioners, and validators. I believe they already made the changes to the master database. There are all kinds of rumors. It's hard to know what is coming when, but there is a Future Plans page that explains some things about what is changing.

I have been reading about SETI@home enhanced on the SETI website and that it will be an improved algorithm to take account off doppler shifts etc. The outcome of this is that the computer processing time will be increased. The website website mentions SETI@home enhanced is in a beta version at the moment. Does anybody know if this has been completed and if so what is it called. I am currently using setiathome 4.18. |
