Ladies and Gentlemen,

The military has a axiom that you should never reinforce defeats. Looking back at my participation in the BOINC world I can only conclude that I have been doing just that.

So, it is time to cease. I had thought to explain the motivations that have brought me to this point but have decided that for the most part it would just be another wasted effort. Those that need to heed the words will see no need. And those that agree with them have no power. So, not much point in long explanations. But, in short, I find I can no longer be a part of a system such as I see today. Dissent is suppressed, good ideas are ignored or marginalized, valuable work is discarded, participants are abused; all this, and more.

It is said that for evil to triumph, all that is needed is for good people to do nothing. For a long time I have tried to combat the problems I have seen with virtually no success. In that nothing else I have tried has been effective I have but one last option and that is to cease supporting activities run by people I can no long trust.

With this in mind I have run all my computers out of work, removed BOINC and shut down the machines. However, I will be funding the BOINC Wiki site until the end of the quarter, 2006-03-31, at which point the site will vanish and the domain will become available.

For those that contributed, and those that used the Wiki, I am truly grateful.

If anyone wishes to preserve the Unofficial BOINC Wiki, I have a number of files that may be of interest:

http://boinc-doc.net/sites.zip My working files of the old site and the Wiki including the code development for the Google search (263M) {not really necessary, unless you like history}.
http://boinc-doc.net/log-files.zip the log file samples for adding messages along with my GREP tool (33.5M).
http://boinc-doc.net/misc.zip Just what it says... all the other stuff includes samples and snippets of material I had not gotten to yet (13.1M).
http://boinc-doc.net/BoincViewLogs.zip For those that might be interested in a data-set for analysis (5.8M).

http://boinc-doc.net/images.zip The images directory of the Wiki site with the image files needed (37M).
http://boinc-doc.net/db118605226.csv.zip Wiki database in a CSV dump (7.2M).
http://boinc-doc.net/db118605226.sql.zip WIki database in a SQL Insert dump (8M).

The explanation on how I implemented the Google search is here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Google_Search

Paul, I think a great many people will be sad to see you leave. However, if you feel that this is the correct course of action for you at this time ,then we can only accept that and wish you well in the future.

Cheers,

:-( This is a sad day for BOINC users. Don't let the haters get you down Paul. I suspect there is a silent majority who find your work helpful.

Hello Paul,

Just coming back from a 2 weeks trip.
Be sure of one thing: you did a tremendous work by putting all your efforts together in the Boinc Wiki. It has been a source of a lot of answers for a lot of questions, it was the bible of the answers and of Boinc.

I’m really sad you came to a point to decide to leave the project. You were somebody he did a lot of work for it.

I wish you the very best, especially regarding your health.

It is indeed a sad day for the Boinc community.

I find myself looking up and quoting something in the Wiki on almost a daily basis. And, my most often used tag has been
For most questions refer to the unofficial guide
BOINC Wiki by Paul. D. Buck and associates. It is the most comprehensive source of information on all things BOINC.

You and your efforts to help the project and its participants will most sincerely be missed.

Well Paul, I'm sorry to see you leave the world of BOINC and SETI. I have to admit, I only went to the Wiki once to find answers to a current problem and found nothing I didn't already know or consider. The Wiki, however, holds a wealth of knowledge for the newbies that jump on board the BOINC and SETI wagon.

I wish you the best in whatever new venture awaits you. If you find the time, come back and say "HI" once in a while. Good luck Paul.... (-:<

Paul,
You have contributed a great deal to this and other projects, and your contributions have helped most everyone at one time or another. It's sad to say but a great majority of people (myself included) just use your resources without stopping to think what it takes to compile and maintain such a wealth of information as you have put together. So this might be a little late but I want to say my hat's off to you for doing such a fine job. We will miss your contributions.

Paul........I have been wondering where you were. Haven't seen you on the board as of late. This morning I see this thread and wow, what a jolt! You have been one of the very few here to make a difference. Your WIKI is the standard help file for so many of our users.

I wish you health and success in whatever endeavor now has your attention.

Dear Paul,

If you decide to change your mind and come back that is all right by me.

I have had a couple of things that I have been suppressing.

1. I came here with the goal of running the scientific work in the hopes of finding signs of life elsewhere. I feel a push to move to other projects. Running other projects is not going to get this job done.

2. The new enhanced version does not seem to be being developed to do a better job at searching the data. I get the impression that the goal of the conversion is to slow things down to take a load off of the servers.

I hope you find something that brings you as much pleasure as SETI seems to of in the past. If not, maybe take a break and come back when it IS fun again.

According to the Beatles in the movie The Yellow Submarine the way to defeat the Blue Meanies is with Love.

Your friend, StokeyBob

I do not know what to say. I am also saddened at this news.

Paul, you have been a wonderous inspiration to many of us. I am proud to have used the WIKI many times for different reasons.

As many have said, you do what you need and we understand. All of our lives are about change, and we will go through this change.

I wish you luck in every future endevor.

If you have a chance, at least pop in and say HI sometime.

Paul
You have to do what you think is best for yourself, but you will be misses on all the BOINC projects.

You have given so much to this effort that we will all miss you and your web site. I think that most do not realize how much time and money you put into building up that WAKI for all to use.

Best of things for the future for you, hope that you get another job that will alow you to work around your limitatins and let you keep up your great technical writting.

And remember you always have a home on the web to came back to with the BOINC projects.

This was unexpected and sad news. You've put down a tremendious amount of time and work for the best of this community and will be greatly missed. I thank you for your efforts. We all thank you.

I hope your Wiki documentation can continue on somehow. It seems such a waste not to. Maybe we can find someone who can host it and maintain it from now on. But your name will always be connected to it, whatever time goes by.

I wish you all the best in the future and hope you'll pop in here and say hello once in while.
