Thank You Michael and Thank You StokeyBob,

There's nothing like receiving messages of support, when you know you are doing a "good thing".

One should accept constructive criticism, but negativity is something that just "erks" me.

Why be negative about some people "pulling together" ??

So, anyway, we've just announced the 2nd Weekend Crunch for 25th-26th March, where we ask members to voluntarily crunch on one project only for 48 hours (from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday).

Our members are currently voting on which of the two suggested projects (between Einstein and Rosetta) will be chosen (via our forum) for the Crunch. (And if one project is offline or has no work, then we do have a back-up project!)

Anybody is free to join in, whether a member of our team or otherwise. Hell bell's, let's make a party of it!

Let's make it the 1st "World Weekend Crunch"....!

Anybody fancy coming to our "do"?

Tim

Plus it keeps your team members involved and active with the team...

Good job!

If it is getting the work done and your team members are having fun it sounds like a good idea to me.

Good luck to you, UBT

Dear "Someone"

The idea was to promote "Team spirit" and get more members of our team (some of whom *have* given up crunching), to re-start and crunch some more for a reason.

Secondly, the idea has been a success - even with around an hour to go, statistically, I can tell you:

1) we've crunched more WU's for SETI (over the last 47 hours) than we normally average - result: SETI project gets more results which may lead to finding the signal sooner.

2) we've generated more interest in the team - more people have joined our team as a result of the successful marketing of this event. Result: more people crunching using BOINC.

3) the idea for the Crunch was always going to be extended to other projects - as such, those projects that have been suspended for two days this weekend, will be benefitting from a *higher* number of team members crunching for THEM next time around (we plan on doing this around once a month). Result: All the BOINC projects will be getting more CPU cycles donated to them.

4) our team has benefitted - we've now in 4th place in the UK and 55th in the World. And now with nearly 400 members, we can use our combined CPU power to help as many BOINC project as we can. Result: A win, win scenario.

How can any of the above be a BAD idea?

regards,

Tim

(PS I thought that now SETI Classic is "off" and hardware is being moved across to BOINC (if suitable), that there should be less "overworked servers" as they are doing far LESS work now. SETI Classic seems to have had far more members than the current SETI BOINC, so I assume with them all gone (and only a percentage "upgrading" to SETI BOINC), that in fact, now is a good time to get people interested in SETI BOINC. Surely we need MORE people joining this project?

{edit: typo !}

Bad idea, will hurt the other projects over the weekend and add strain to the already overworked servers at SETI.

If you feel that you have to do this why not pick a project that is in real need of aditional people?

Not a teams problem it servers are overloaded, other projects are on the list, SETI was chosen as the 1st one as it was the creator of BOINC.

Don't see how it hurts other projects as there work is still getting crunched. Just stopped crunching others for 2 days.

Rosetta, Einstein and others to follow at a later date

Hi All,

Just a heads-up for any UK members.

The very 1st "Weekend Crunch" dedicated to SETI@home launches tonight at midnight (UTC).

We've asked our team members to voluntarily crunch *only* for SETI for the 48 hours as from tonight.

The idea is to generate some "Team Spirit" and to make our 370+ members feel that they are doing something useful - and all at the same time !!

Feedback from members in support of this has been very positive, so, if you are curious and want to see how well any of our UK BOINC Team crunchers get on, click here >> visit our team website

All the best
