hello. i have been running boinc/seti@home version 4.45 for awhile. i was running it yesterday and then i restarted my computer. When i tried to run it again it said "boinc manager is unable to connect to boinc client." i thought maybe i just needed to install the newest version 5.2.13. so i uninstalled 4.45 and installed 5.2.13. still i get the message "boinc manager is unable to connect to boinc client." now what do i do? thanks |

Did you check for error messages on the messages tab? A bit more info would help. We would only be guessing at this point. |

when it first starts up it gives me this message. there is nothing in the message tab. it only says "boinc manager is unable to connect to boinc client" as it starts up initially. also i have tried to leave to leave it blank. if i do that it won't attempt a connection at all. what i don't understand is why it did work for months and now it doesn't work? puzzling... thanks for your help |

Try File, Select Computer, leave the options blank, and hit OK. I'm getting the same error. I just bought a new cpu and have a DSL connection. I thought this should be pretty easy(at least as easy as it was when I had it on my old cpu) but it's starting to become a headache. I don't have any messages in my box by the way. Thanks in advance for your help. ***DISREGARD...RESTARTING THE CPU MIGHT HELP EH?!?! LOL!!*** |

Check the password in the file gui_rpc_auth.cfg by closing BOINC and opening the file in a text editor. To make your life easier, remove the password and hit Enter, then save it. Restart BOINC manager. If it doesn't connect, in the menu bar go to File > Select Computer, use localhost as the host name and leave the password field blank. Click OK. MJ |

Ok, I dunno if this will work for you but it worked for me. The BIONIC CLIENT wasn't being started when my computer started up. Only the BIONIC MANAGER was being started, hence it not being able to connect to the client because it wasn't running. *Go to "C:\\Program Files\\Bionic\\" (Or where your Bionic folder is) *Double Click the "BIONIC.EXE" file *Re-Run your BIONIC MANAGER Like I said, dunno if this will fix it for you but it did for me. Hope this helps! |

Try File, Select Computer, leave the options blank, and hit OK. I'm having the same problem and have tried all the suggestions that has been provide in several different threads with no luck so far. I have also tried reinstalling - no dice. I can start the client and it is shown running in task manager. However, it I try close the manager (minimize to task bar) or answer no to the retry question then about 15-20 seconds later the seti client quits (per task manger). I'bve been spending quite a bit of time trying to get it to work (works fine on my other computers). I'm out of ideas. |

I have been experiencing the same problem. I have a "fresh" Windows XP load on a laptop which connects and performs fine. I have a desktop that I updated with the latest Microsoft patches and it will not connect. I did the double click on the BOINC.exe and that looks like it is running . . . but the older version. (I also upgraded to the new BOINC version when I started having problems. There is no GUI response . . . The error message displays after several minutes and when acknowledged, removes the window and the BOINC icon out of the task bar. |

Only the BIONIC MANAGER was being started, hence it not being able to connect to the client because it wasn't running. This worked, but the bionic.exe window stays open. When I close the bionic.exe window the Manager disconnects from the localhost. I don't understand what would have caused this malfunction. I changed nothing on my computer that I am aware of. Sounds like a bug. |

I had this problem also when I first dl-ed and installed BOINC. My solution to the problem was a simple reboot and it did its Java thing during startup and after that it's all good. |

Not receiving work from BOINC. You never know if it is "Thee" or "Me". Is it Thee? |

I had this problem also when I first dl-ed and installed BOINC. Same here, but when I tried to connect to "localhost" w/o rebooting, it keeps trying, but also keeps coming back to "retry or cancel" popup. Only solution seems to be reboot. |

Not receiving work from BOINC. When you have difficulties connecting {or downloading work}, check the Home Page, the Server Status, and the Technical News. Today, you'll see that on Tuesday there was a campus-wide power outage, and then the lab went on to do some maintenance on the servers. As a result of the outage, "all the metadevices needed to be resynced. This resync could take up to 24 hours, during which the master science database will be down. That means no splitting and no assimilating, and we'll probably run out of work to send before too long. Oh well." Yesterday was the normal Wednesday outage for database backup. Any time this happens, nobody gets through while they're working, and then there's such a traffic jam of backlogged work and requests that it takes a few hours for everybody to get through. If you're still seeing this problem after the server status shows work being generated and available again, then go to the Messages tab, copy the last 20 or so entries from there and paste them into a reply here. Don't bang on the Update button or reset, we need to see what BOINC is doing or trying to do by itself. MJ |

I decided to keep the password though. Interesting that it changed from 14ecdd0a03e4c73e47906c008a704483 (when I first established the account) to 883ed1a0a0046b35eb3568de86e8d35f. After first detaching, when I typed in "localhost" and then "883ed1a0a0046b35eb3568de86e8d35f" (or pasted from Outlook) it reattached & went through the menu thing asking for e-mail & password. Of course, it reattaches fine with a simple re-boot as well. |

I'm running a Dell with WinXP Pro, SP2 and current for all Windows auto updates. My older IBM laptop which runs WinXP Home, SP2 and current for all Windows auto updates is running Boinc 5.2.13 and is working just fine. |
