Yes, but the problem is getting worse instead of better with the recent changes, and nothing is being done about it, other than preaching that you should live with it or go elsewhere. Two months ago after the outages, Uploads would usually go up one at a time very slowly. There would be a few downloads, then nothing for awhile and finally a few more downloads, spread out over five or six hours. The whole time there were a lot of dropped connections, wasting network bandwidth and server time. The first parts would transfer, but the last part would not, or it would be dropped at the end before being acknowledged.

About a month ago they compiled the scripts and uploading took off and cleared most of the backlog of uploads in just twenty minutes or so, and then downloads in a shorter period of time than the outage had last.

Recently, every thing has slowed way back down. The last three outages almost NO uploads and Download for several hours from my systems, no matter what I tried. Long timeouts from dropped connections again. What is strange about it now, is that after several hours of nothing, a machine will suddenly upload all its results in short order, and once that has happened, it will then, and only then, start doing downloads in a reasonable amount of time, considering the load on the server.

What is even stranger, someone will post that all of his just went, then half an hour someone else will post the same, yet I have not been able to upload/download much of anything. Then at some point mine will suddenly start going. Yet half an hour later some else has yet to get anything uploaded and downloaded. It's almost as if where you live, or your network lag/ping time determines when and if you get to upload/download data. I have a 82ms to 96ms ping time, and on this outage, vert little happened for almost three hours!

The discouraging part, it is now back to almost solid dropped connections and long timeouts again for the first hour or two. So the same basic problem of not being able to handle a large number of request without wasteful dropping of partly completed requests is still with BONIC/Seti and is not getting any better. Once started, a request should be completed, not dropped part of the way through, while new requests should not be started until there is bandwidth to complete the transfers already in progress. Right now its like, start everything and then drop them when more requests come in to start new uploads/downloads. A server should know when it is trying to do too many requests at the same time, and not allow new ones until some are finished.

It is getting rather pathetic now, maybe there should be a locked sticky on all the forums and Q&A Boards, with a simple title such as Unable to upload/download and a nice message inside to basically say sit and chill the problems will be over in a few hours, there was maintance on the servers.

It is getting rather pathetic now, maybe there should be a locked sticky on all the forums and Q&A Boards, with a simple title such as Unable to upload/download and a nice message inside to basically say sit and chill the problems will be over in a few hours, there was maintance on the servers.

Currently yes, but it was down for a few hours earlier. In the mean
time, it will take some hours before the log jam of uploads clears. The
servers are currently getting slammed. This is normal under the circumstances.

Just when I have been getting up my own very minor head of steam, SETI refuses to either download or upload. Why does this keep happening periodically - and without any sort of technical info being posted? I currently have two results that are not going up and one new set of work not coming down. This is no big deal for such a minor participant but it is still very frustrating.

I have rebooted and that made no differemce. Earlier in the day there were some SETI file servers down but nothing down now for ages. What goes on?

It is indeed frustrating, I seem to have this problem every few days at the moment. I've got units left to process but not being able to upload work means that other people get delayed credit at the least...and the sever status page says the upload/download server is online?

As in most cases, reading the home page news first will alleviate the angst peeps have when they can not up/download. Checking the server status page is also helpful rather than immediately starting a new thread. But then again, no real harm done.

Todays server outage was posted prior to the occurance, and the explaination given.

You may want to set your cache a little higher. It may not help with the stress of SETI being semi working or down but at least your machines may make through and still be running (knock on wood).

Go to "YOUR ACCOUNTS" at the top of the page. Click on the blue "View or edit general preferences". At the bottom of the page click on the "Edit preferences". That will allow you to increase the spot that says "Connect to network about every". That will increase the amount of work that you will have on your machine ready to run. Maybe try one day or something small at first. You want it small enough that you get the work returned on time but big enough to get through an outage. I've heard that it is best to keep it on the low side for multiple projects.

To get it to take effect immediately you need to update the project under the BOINC managers "Project" tab.

I don't think updating is going to help right now but you may want to goose it anyways.

Like you they are at home with their families. They remotely check in from time to time and do what they can from home. The Seti people have lives too.
