Message 231883 - Posted: 16 Jan 2006, 1:53:23 UTC - in response to Message 231637.

I have been unable to get work for several hours. I sure do miss my cached WUs

BOINC will cache WUs for you if you set your preferences. Here's how:
-----------------SNIP--------------------------------------------------------

Thanks, I am just back like 3 days after a couple of years vacation. Best if I would have RTFM eh <g> Thanks for the heads up.

My pleasure, glad to be of help.... (-:<

*5. Click the "Update preferences" button and you're set.

To wait until Boinc contacts Seti by itself yes... I mean, the Boinc version on your computer doesn't know about the changes you made on the page, until you tell it to:

- Open Boinc Manager.
- Go to Projects tab.
- Select the Seti project by clicking on it.
- Click on the Update button on the left.

That will tell Boinc on your system about the changes you made to your preferences on the web page.

And then wait at least 10 minutes and 4 seconds before you may see the change happening. That deferral mode thingy. ;)

Ooops! Thanks Jord, I forgot about that. It's been so long since I changed my preferences that it's easy to overlook that tidbit of information. Thanks for letting everyone know.... (-:<

I would assume the continued connection difficulties are still related to Friday's announcment ...

There have been numerous but very brief network drop outs over the past few days affecting all of the Space Sciences Lab. This turned out to be a problem with the SSL firewall and is hopefully fixed at this point.

There have been occasional drop-outs, but there was a big one during the last 24 hours, according to http://fragment1.berkeley.edu/~cricket/inr-668-interfaces.html

Everything now seems working from here (UK).
30-40 uploads/downloads cleared in seconds on a retry.

In holland same problem, unable to download WU's or upload result files.
Almost out of Work (and bbout 30 resultfiles which I cannot Upload)

Except for Kryten (splitter) all servers seem to be up and running.

Cannot make sense out of this?

Anybody knowing what is going on?

Best regards from S@NL - Impat

I have a large backload of WU's waiting to upload and download. The only problem showing on the status page is the "sah_splitter7 kryten" not running. Oh well, I have 10 a day cache set so I'm good for quite a while.

Should the value you pick for the cache be based on your "Avg. Credit" figure?

I try to set mine high enough to get through these outages but low enough to make sure the work gets turned in on time. You will have to watch your machines and see how they do. I've also heard that it needs to be low if you run other projects or you can run into trouble.

BOINC will cache WUs for you if you set your preferences. Here's how:

  • 1. Go to your account page.
  • 2. Click on "View or edit general preferences".
  • 3. Scroll down to the "Network usage" section. There you will see the following:
    Connect to network about every
(determines size of work cache; maximum 10 days)

  • 4. If you want to increase this value, click the "Edit preferences" link and enter the value you desire. Maximum 10 days. Mine is set to 4 and keeps me crunching through most any length outage.
  • 5. Click the "Update preferences" button and you're set.

Enjoy, and happy caching, crunching, BOINCing.... (-:<

good idea btw

hey i dont like doing this waiting thing, this "boinc is currently idle" screensaver is stressing me, need to do some crunchage

A word to the wise: Don't run the screensaver. If you need to, run a blank screensaver which won't use CPU cycles that BOINC needs for doing REAL work. I never use the screensaver. (-:<

Theoretically you should be able to get work now. Just after any problem that causes work to be sent out slower there's a short period of time where it is still difficult to get work because everyone is requesting it.
