Just got around to looking at S@H and noticed things very sluggish (uploading/downloading WUs, deferred connections to the servers, browsing on the S&H web sites). No other web sites seem affected.

Anyone else noticed this?

I see there has been limited access for overnight
It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues

There are currently issues that can cause some delay and can make browsing a bit more difficult than usual.
Sometimes you will get an error saying
"Warning: mysql_pconnect(): Too many connections in /disks/koloth/a/inet_services/boinc_www_https/share/projects/sah/html/inc/db.inc on line 16
Unable to connect to database - please try again later Error: 1040Too many connections"

If this happens, just wait 10 sec and try again.

Sorry about the inconvenience.

Looks like there is a problem with validation too.

Looks like there is a problem with validation too.

The problem seems to be that the main database server is under exceptionally high load. This affects all database-driven webpages as well as the scheduler and validation services.

The Update facility doesn't seem to work. Avg. credit seems to be dropping. UL / DL seems to be functioning though.
Any ideas ?

Something changed within the hour. Cricket is reporting a surge back to more than 40 Mbps on the net at Berkeley. So communications is getting 'repaired'. However, the stats are 2h+ behind. Is this due to the net or the servers running afoul?

I am getting "no work from project" or "no schedulers responded" in about equal mesures at the moment.

One WU left on this PC, and only 1 hour left of it.
I was out yesterday, and forgot to top up my cache before I left.

Hope it comes back soon....

BOINC will cache WUs for you if you set your preferences. Here's how:

  • 1. Go to your account page.
  • 2. Click on "View or edit general preferences".
  • 3. Scroll down to the "Network usage" section. There you will see the following:
    Connect to network about every
(determines size of work cache; maximum 10 days)

  • 4. If you want to increase this value, click the "Edit preferences" link and enter the value you desire. Maximum 10 days. Mine is set to 4 and keeps me crunching through most any length outage.
  • 5. Click the "Update preferences" button and you're set.

Enjoy, and happy caching, crunching, BOINCing.... (-:<

Theoretically you should be able to get work now. Just after any problem that causes work to be sent out slower there's a short period of time where it is still difficult to get work because everyone is requesting it.

A word to the wise: Don't run the screensaver. If you need to, run a blank screensaver which won't use CPU cycles that BOINC needs for doing REAL work. I never use the screensaver. (-:<

Not happy myself, but then again, I got a couple day's WU's on my 3 machines. So I'm toasty.

Should the value you pick for the cache be based on your "Avg. Credit" figure?

I try to set mine high enough to get through these outages but low enough to make sure the work gets turned in on time. You will have to watch your machines and see how they do. I've also heard that it needs to be low if you run other projects or you can run into trouble.
