I Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

It's not the money that's evil... It's the love of money that's evil... ;)
I needed no bible to say the same. It's simple logic. Has nothing to do with religion or christianity. But religion(s) and christianity have adopted this moral issue.

So much worse then that our entire civilization is depending on money and competition for it. A recipe for creating greed and liars.

It's unfortunate, that, as a species, we seem to have this inbuilt need to 'exchange and barter'; to want what we don't/can't have....to covet, i think the expression is.

Maybe because it makes sense?

Exchange and barter doesn't have to involve greed. In its pure and original form, it's intended to get you what you need by exchanging something you have a surplus of. The surplus is in a sense capital (or money), but it's not natural to collect more of it than you need.

BTW, what happened to your profile? It's gone...! I thought you were uploading a picture? :)

I can see your point.....it isn't natural, but i think that the basic premise for greed is something that is in built. Our instinct to store for times of hardship, to survive at any cost...that's what gone mad. It's like a defective gene that we can't switch off and therefore, a natural survival instinct becomes the thing we call greed.

But I guess that creationists could never undetstand the concept of amphibians and the evolution, thereof. So repeat after me, "the world is only 5,800 years old, the world is only 5,800 years old, the world...."

Firstly, just let me say I'm a long time ignorer of this thread, but first time reader and poster today.

Secondly,

I don't believe Jesus is son of god, etc. He was probably just some nice fella trying to help the poor and told others to be nice to your fellow human way back when and this is the ultimate meaning of (dare I say it) religion. But the true meaning has been hijacked by the zealots. In saying this however.....I'll tell you all something.

I live in a relatively poor area of Melbourne (but I'm no way poor). My son is 6 and goes to the local government primary school which is underfunded and relies heavily on fund raising by the parents of the students to help run the school. It is a great school, with great teachers and a great community spirit. There were only 140 students there last year, but there will be 160+ this year. In my suburb there are a few large churches. One is the tradional church on the hill with a large steeple and has a very long history. Another is of the more modern variety, with a "younger" congregation. It's church is nothing special from the outside in fact it just looks like a standard 2 story office and has no outwardly signs that it is a church. They are both "Christian" churches. I'll call these church 1 and church 2. Neither church has students from my sons school who go to them (I think - maybe church 1 does).

Each year for the past 5 years Church 2 has performed a working bee at my sons school. Yard beautification, painting, basic building maintenance etc. All up providing tools, parts & materials that would cost in the order of $10k to purchase. The school always looks improved after each working bee. In going along to the church to give a thank you talk, the principle of the school was also given a new industrial vacuum cleaner since the one that was used during the working bee last year was found to be old and didn't work very well. Two months later they then donated $30k of computers to the school. This meant that for the first time the school has sufficient computers in each classroom to allow use by the various students in each grade to have a computer per student when required for a lesson. So all up, now there are about 20 computers per area with there being 4 areas. So no doubling up of students per computer. In return they have asked for nothing.

Church 1 has provided nothing, ever. They do have a great looking church and it must cost a small fortune to keep maintained. But I hear the bells ringing from about a mile away every Sunday and on Saturdays after weddings.

What am I getting at overall? I think the old traditional flavours of religions have lost the intended meaning and ideals behind them. Some of the people within the religions have not, but as a whole they have lost it. I think what we are seeing are people who are fedup with the traditional religions going out and forming new ones trying to reinvigorate the ideals of helping one another and community spirit (but we are also seeing some the older "new" religions getting corrupted by zealots, the power hungry and the money hungry).

Just my 4c worth.

Live long and crunch.

Paul.

II Timothy 4

3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Is this what the churches are doing?

I agree... ;)

Moby: Run On

Lord God Almighty let me tell the news
my head got wet in midnight dew
great God i been down on my bended knees
talking to a man from galilee
michael spoke and he sound so sweet
i thought i heard the shuffle of angels' feet
He put one hand upon my head
great God Almighty let me tell you what He said

[bridge:]

go tell that lonesome liar
go tell that midnight rider
tell the gamblin', ramblin' backslider
tell them God Almighty gonna cut 'em down

[chorus:]

you might run on for a long time
run on, ducking and dodging
run on, journey, for a long time
let me tell you God Almighty gonna cut you down

you might throw your rock, hide your head
work in the dark with your fellow men
sure as God made you rich and poor
you're gonna reap just what you sow

[chorus] x3

<you might run
what is the real thing ?
run
what is the real thing ?
come on>

some people go to church just to sit in the fire
trying to make a date with a neighbor's wife
brother let me tell you just as sure as you're born
you better leave that woman alone

[bridge]

[chorus] x8

Nah, he was supposed to be only 900+ years old...better food, cleaner water, cleaner air, better health care, never needed a life insurance policy...

Genesis 25:7
These are the days of the years of Abraham's life, a hundred and seventy-five years.

Genesis 5:5
Thus all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.

Any more questions? ;)

well, i suppose you wouldn't need one if you are convinced that the 'end is nigh'......but also, don't forget all those nubile & beautiful infidels that needed saving from themselves, that must have got the circulation going. Good for the heart and better than a quick run around the temple.

If you google "Acanthostega" you will see that this is no joke and very real science.
