perhaps the boinc software could be farmed out to commercial institutions, at a cost of 1 cent per workunit to be donated to seti@home??

obviously im sure a lot of us would happily donate our CPU time, if it were to benefit seti@home.

Hi

Thanks to all of you.

Its amazing to see we have allready $59000 donated, but its allready 0,33% of the volunteers who has donated.
If this could raise to 10% i think the problems should be solved for this year.

Also the donation of hardware could be a choice for companies.

regards and respectfully
Mike

I was considering the recurring donations program. We support you SETI and will do what we can!

Also I figure that at this rate if donations keep up the way they have been then in approx 12 ($750,000US divided into 12= $62,500US a month) months they should have enough in the budget to keep them afloat, and meet current objectives. Although personally I am still shooting for the big 750K this month. Would be nice I am sure:)

Antony Magnus

P.S. Does anyone know if you choose to opt in to the recurring donations program if SETI keeps sending you that tax deductions forms? Personally I say save the money for the stamp and put it online for printout via users accounts. Just an idea:)

I am proud to be a member of the Caring Group.

First the Good News as of:
Page last updated: 20 Mar 2006 1:00:58 UTC

Donations to SETI@home Since 1 Sep 2005:
Number of Donations: 1725
Total Donations: $ 85979.64
Smallest Donation: $ 10.00
Largest Donation: $ 1200.00
Average Donation: $ 49.84
Median Donation: $ 25.00
Donation Rate (per day): $ 430.26
% of Volunteers that have Donated: 0.38%

Mar 2006 $70644.14 1352 $52.25

What was donated from Nov 2001 to August 2005 equaled $43432.27

As I looked at BOINC Stats this morning it shows that 179907 are active users (last 30 days) of 408,163 Total Users. If we look at the math and understand that some can not due to whatever reason we can define how many are needed to meet the goal.

For $750,000.00
%Usrs each Active Users
100% $4.17 179907.00
50% $8.34 89953.50
25% $16.68 44976.75
10% $41.69 17990.70

I want everyone to understand that I nor do I feel anyone at Seti is forcing anyone to do anything. I have been vocal about a known need that until recently was voiced.

If you feel that Seti has returned some value (yes that is hard to define) to your life. Then Please consider a donation. It does not have to be this month or April. It should be what you feel that you can afford. While I have not tried it in your preferences where it states about donations is an option for "Are all your donations anonymous?" is a yes/no switch... It would allow you to say that you do not want to be seen...

Regards

Pappa

This is truly amazing and great! Wow, people are really opening their wallets now. I will donate some at the end of the month, when money comes in to my bank account.

@ Matt:
In case you haven't noticed, we just announced our first annual funding drive on the home page. E-mails are going out as I speak.
Matt, I never received that email and I never received the email which announced closing of SETI Classic either. Several others here have the same problem. I have checked and double checked my spam filters and spam folders, but these mails aren't filtered out either. My email address is valid on my BOINC account (and also was in my Classic account). But I have changed my email address since I first signed up to SETI. Maybe there is somewhere in the system that change didn't happen?

Prognatus, I have just got my email today, so it's hopefully on it's way to you as we speak. They are sending them out in portions.
Ok! Then I'll wait a few days and see if it shows up. Of course, the email itself isn't important to me, as I already know about it, but I'm more concerned if there is a problem that can affect future emails also.

I look at this, and know that People that are concerned are doing what they can.

Donations to SETI@home Since 1 Sep 2005:
Number of Donations: 2203
Total Donations: $ 108250.65
Smallest Donation: $ 10.00
Largest Donation: $ 1500.00
Average Donation: $ 49.14
Median Donation: $ 25.00
Donation Rate (per day): $ 538.75
% of Volunteers that have Donated: 0.48%

I also have not recieved an email about the donation... If it look at it from one side I have donated within the September time frame... I also see see that BOINC is now doing more with projects that would otherwise go un-noticed... The key is spreading the word to help... Seti/BOINC is something that I believe in since 2000... It is now doing more for science than others can get grants for and buy computer time... They all impact on our Life near and Future...

Please consider a Donation...

I also have not recieved an email about the donation...

From: Sir Arthur C. Clarke and Dan Werthimer <donors@ssl.berkeley.edu>

Dear Misfit,

SETI@home needs your help. But before we tell you why - and how you can help - Dan and I would like to thank you for your role in the SETI@home success story.

First, we would like to thank you for your past financial support. We would also like to thank you for your participation in SETI@home. During the first SETI@home project you personally assisted us by searching for extraterrestrial signals in 1000 data chunks and providing 1.120 years of computing time. We want you to know we appreciate your efforts and the efforts of the other 5.4 million volunteers who have donated over 2.4 million years of processing time. When we started, people thought our projection of 100,000 users to be overly optimistic! You helped us prove that public participation in scientific computing could work. You also helped us to see that this type of community effort deserved to be more common. That's why we developed the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing or BOINC. BOINC has the benefit of allowing our volunteers the option of sharing their processing power with other worthy projects in addition to SETI@home. These projects range from looking for gravitational waves to searching for cures to diseases.

But all these successes are just a beginning. As you are aware, SETI@home has successfully transitioned to operating under BOINC. Because of this, new searches are on the horizon for SETI@home. We are releasing a new version of our processing software that increases the sensitivity of our search by a factor of two or more. We are building and installing a new data recorder at Arecibo. This data recorder operates in conjunction with a newly installed receiver that has the capability to observe seven places on the sky simultaneously. It also increases our sensitivity by another factor of five. These increases in sensitivity mean that SETI@home will have capability of detecting signals that are three times more distant than we could before. The region of space we can search will expand by a factor of thirty. That's thirty times the chance that your computer will detect that faint signal from another star.

This increase in capability isn't without cost. Following the "dot com" bust, the commercial support that kept SETI@home running has largely disappeared. Because of this loss of support, we can no longer count on matching funds from the University of California. We are rapidly approaching the end of what funds we do have. We we will need to raise about $750,000 to pay for these new capabilities and to keep SETI@home operating for the next year. Without this support SETI@home may be forced to shut down.

We hope that you will consider making a further donation to SETI@home. You can make a secure donation by credit card by clicking this link. Instructions for donation by check or money order are there as well. Unless you specify otherwise, your donation will be noted by a star icon next to your username on the SETI@home pages and your username will appear on our list of donors. If you do not wish to have this recognition you may indicate that as well. Please be assured that regardless of whether or not you choose to have your donation be anonymous, SETI@home will not share your address with other organizations.

You can check on our fundraising progress by visiting our main site at http://setiathome.berkeley.edu

Thank You,

This was brought up in another thread, and is worth repeating here.

Some employers will match contributions made by their employees to charitable organizations. Donations to SETI@Home go by way of UC Berkeley, and so should qualify. The amounts matched depend on the company; I've heard of matches of $.50 per $1 employee donation, and of $2 or $3 per $1 donation. Information on whether this is available, how much the match would be, what paperwork needs to be done, should be available from the payroll or benefits department of the employer. SETI wouldn't be the one to initiate this, it needs to start with the employee.

If you've made or are making a donation, and have an employer, it might be worth a bit of your time to investigate this, you may be able to turn a $1 donation into $1.50 or $2.00 or even $3.00, just by filling out a form!

Also....in case any of you missed it from main page Seti just topped $100,000.

That was so fast I wonder when it will top 200k....

I've donated 100 US-Dollars to the project, because I don't want it to be shut down. I am convinced that Earth is observed by an alien race which has built a base on the backside of moon, but this not a scientific proof. Therefore seti enhanced will be the only chance to get that proof within my lifetime (I'm 46.)

Everybody should make a small donation to the project to keep it working.

I reckon the donations will reach saturation point soon and donations will start to drop, oh well not much can be done on that, I suppose. I will be donating soonish
