The beta test of the SETI@home Enhanced client (version 5.0) started recently, and if everything goes well, we may see it released publicly in a week's time.

Does anyone happen to know exactly what is "enhanced" about this new application? I can't find any information on just how 5.0 is going to be "better". Does this new application increase our chances of finding something? Is it more sensitive, do more crunching, at more frequencies??? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Seen as though the new version of Enhanched won't download it will be longer than that

Enhanched should be on 5.0 but it downloads 4.11 at the moment

Here is the link for the beta test site. In most instances, the WU's are crunched even more than they are now. They say at average it will take approx. 10 times longer than the standard app going now. Hope that helps.

Just bumping this thread to see if anyone has any more details on what the enhanced app is going to do. Basically, is the new app going to be more sensitive to potential signals or is it just crunching more frequencies at the same sensitivity, etc.

Thanks!!

And thank you to the authors of the previous replies!

The SetiB project is now on Ver 5 which is hoped will be the release issue when it becomes mainstream.

The application is increasing the sensitivity, using the same types of units, they will still be ~350KB. The crunch time increases significantly, this cpu which does present standard app in 2h:06m takes 28h:30m for the enhanced app at most common angle_range.

The angle_range has effect on crunch times, and Ingleside has produced figures, which still nead verifying but give an indication;

Crunch-times and Deadlines in Seti_Enhanced is heavily influenced by angle-range, so for a computer using 3h10m with the "standard" v4.18-seti-application can setup a table like this:

AR - cpu-time (h) - Deadline (days)
0.11 - 12.11 - 76.39 (same for smaller angle-range)
0.12 - 12.92 - 81.48
0.15 - 14.41 - 90.86
0.20 - 16.89 - 106.48
0.225 - 18.13 - 114.29
0.226 - 56.12 - 353.79
0.25 - 49.33 - 311.00
0.30 - 39.27 - 247.62
0.35 - 32.39 - 204.22
0.40 - 27.41 - 172.82
0.41 - 26.58 - 167.57
0.42 - 25.79 - 162.60
0.43 - 25.04 - 157.89
0.44 - 24.33 - 153.41
0.45 - 23.66 - 149.16
0.46 - 23.02 - 145.12
0.47 - 22.41 - 141.27
0.48 - 21.82 - 137.60
0.49 - 21.27 - 134.10
0.50 - 20.74 - 130.76
0.55 - 18.41 - 116.07
0.60 - 16.51 - 104.11
0.65 - 14.94 - 94.20
0.70 - 13.61 - 85.86
0.75 - 12.49 - 78.77
0.80 - 11.52 - 72.66
0.85 - 10.68 - 67.36
0.90 - 9.94 - 62.72
0.95 - 9.30 - 58.62
1.00 - 8.72 - 54.98
1.05 - 8.20 - 51.72
1.10 - 7.74 - 48.80
1.13 - 7.48 - 47.19
1.14 - 4.13 - 26.04 (same for larger angle-range)

Please note, this info is based on the current estimates the Splitter is using, so your real cpu-times will very likely be different. Also, even if estimates is correct for one Angle Range, it doesn't mean isn't 2x away for another angle-range.

If used in conjunction with BOINC V5.2.6 or later the credit calculation is by counting Fpops, which looks like all cpu/OS combinations claim exactly the same +/- 1%. For the most common angle_range this is 191 cobblestones.

As far as I know the deadlines have not been decided.
I get the general feeling most users would prefer if it isn't longer than a month, but this would cause problems for older computers, unless they run 24/7,
I have seen a 486 crunching here that takes 70hrs for present units if that was to carry on the most common unit would need 40 days to complete a unit running 24/7. Unless at the server end they complicate thing by sorting the units to suit the cpu.

Great - Thanks very much!

I'm really looking forward to the new app going public now that I know it's going to be "doing more science". Also, the longer crunch times should take a lot of stress off of the servers.

Thanks again!

I have currently got one at 61% thats is after 23hrs work a couple of days to go before it will be completed as I run other projects do

I don't know if an optimised version is out as yet but im sure thats just as soon as enhanced is released over here there will be one to follown shortly so at least that would cut the crunching time.

As for deadlines at the moment they are a year which seems way too long to me, I would say 3months would be a safe bet and anyone who couldn't manage that could try an optimised app to speed up the process

I read elsewhere that Cruncher3 already is developing an optimized version for it.

Question: We will all have to logon to this site to d/l this new version? What's going to happen to most of the users and hosts out there that never ever login here?

When Enhanched comes out here it will be automatic BOINC will just connect and down load an enhanched Workunit, is as simple as that for the majority of people

Hi, Lightsttn1 here. I have an additional question to this. Is the New App going to then run slower than Molasses in January on older computers. My computer presently takes around 8 hours to complete a SETI work file. I have a 600E Intel Pentium 3 on a computer with 1 GIG RAM @ 133Mhz. Does that mean It will take older computer users like me over 60 hours to complete a work file using the updated program, and if this is the case, what will you do to lower the time to complete, or are you (SETI-BOINC) putting older volunteers out intentionally, or otherwise? Thank You in Advance for Your Time, and Assistance.

It's my understanding that the workunits will take much longer than current ones to complete. 60 hours is probably a good rough estimate for your computer.

This is not "getting rid" of the old crunchers. The deadlines for the new WUs will be ample for most anyone to complete it in time (I've heard one year floating around). Your contributions will be exactly as helpful then as they are now.

More like 15-16 months on the WU's I have been getting

Hi. James here. I have a couple of GOOD questions that may be on many minds: You say a new BOINC V5 is soon to come out. The first question is: Will it work? The older versions to date had many problems finally causing me to stop running the BOINC program. The main problems were the conflict with ATI 9550 Graphics Cards, and the problem with the constant WU failures. Another question is: Will it eat system resources on older computer setups, as did the other versions, or is it going to be designed to use less resources on those older systems. So as to make participation easier for all users? Thank You.
