I'm using WinXP SP2; although I'm the only user on this PC, I run two accounts - an Admin one and a limited for everyday use.

I just installed the latest version, up from 4.18 (!).

I installed the software from the admin account, where it ran fine, but it flatly refused to run under any other account. Clicking on the Boinc Manager had no result.

Eventually I upgraded my everyday account to an admin level and installed BOINC as single user, and it's now running.

But I don't really want to do that. I didn't have this under 4.18 which ran as you'd expect.

Incidentally, I had a bunch of units under SETI classic; SETI knows I've been a member since 1999, but it appears to have lost all my classic units.

As I recall, I changed my email address but the password got messed up somehow.

Why not install as a service and then it's always running even when no-one is logged on?
There is a guide in the Wiki.

Share installations need to make sure EVERYONE has read/write to the BOINC folder and subfolders. Limited accounts will not, until you change it.

"To recover password of seti classic
If you have access to your Classic Seti files the open user_info.sah in notepad, or similar, and copy the contents into the form below to recover your password.
If not, and you can remember your Classic Seti email address, even if it is not your current address, then install Seti Classic again, link for version 3.08 here (direct download link), if needed. Use you old email address to get relevant information. Stop Seti Classic and follow instruction above.

This page uses the user_info.sah file from your Classic SETI folder to extract your Classic password. With that information, your BOINC account key and your current email address, you can go to this page and link the Classic to the BOINC. Use the top section for your Classic seti email address and the third section on this form for the BOINC information and the classic password.

That will put all Classic credits under your old name in your new account. Well, almost all of them. All up until the 15th of March 2005.
It was a snapshot made of the Seti Classic database on the 15th of March 2005. Seti/Boinc cannot update the Classic database in realtime, as the whole Classic database needs to be offline to make a snapshot. So the next and last update will be done once Classic shuts down.

You start from zero credits in Seti/Boinc. Read this FAQ in the Wiki on that. The credits in Classic aren't compatible with the credits in Boinc. So the old ones won't be added to the new ones, ever.

To start with Seti-BOINC please use the 10 steps manual".

Stolen from Ageless ;o)
If your old addy is no longer valid AND you really don't remember the password to Seti Classic, write to: setidba at ssl.berkeley.edu

Share installations need to make sure EVERYONE has read/write to the BOINC folder and subfolders.

yes, BOINC 4.x and 5.x has a bug in shared install.
I also have win2k and winxp and use the admin to install the sw and driver only.
The power user cannot use the Boinc as because the installer set right only to admin a users.
More bad, users dont have modify permission the the folder, so also after an admin shared install, no user or power user can use the BOINC.
To fix this, add the correct right to the BOINC folders and subfolders.
Everyone is not necessary, and full control is not necessary.
Put read, execute, modify and write to the group: 'users' and 'power users'.
