I have tried the new bionic and to be honest had no end of problems like getting new units getting my old stats back and getting the software to recognise my password. I have been a member for a lot of years now and the old software was great, non intrusive and easy to run. Why the change? The old saying is so correct especially in this case (if it's not broke don’t fix it!!) I have seen many people on here who are complaining to about bionic many members have had to stop participating at all in seti this seems so unfair. Why don’t you guys at Berkley listen and bring back the old software or you will loose yet another participant and many more I assume. |

I have tried the new bionic and to be honest had no end of problems like getting new units getting my old stats back and getting the software to recognise my password. Your classic stats are accessable on the seti classic site. And if the merge of the both database was successfull, you see it on the "your account" site. On the account site are only the classic stats from march 15th in the moment.
Because the old one had made lot of problems and was not enought flexible. For example cheating, sendig out the WUs up to twelve times - boinc sends out a WU 4 times, they had also a lot of problems on the backend. with boinc you can now join a lot of differnet projects with one scheduler (=boinc).
Please read this post from Matt Lebowski from the seti@home team. It describes the situation of seti@home, berkley and the need for a new software in detail : http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=24612#209002
Never, because classic is outdated and over. The science parts on the seti app are the same like on classic. But soon will a new seti app with 11 times higher senstiy and a lot of more science computing released. |

I have tried the new bionic and to be honest had no end of problems like getting new units getting my old stats back and getting the software to recognise my password. Well, clearly, a lot of us old faithful, won't be able to continue our participation. I can't get the very user unfriendly Boinc client to work, either...Too bad, I was a Setiathome participant for many years...I guess it's just like baseball...no loyalty among the players, who cares about the fans... |

Sorry, but you must accept the decision of the project to close classic and continue with boinc. There was to much problems with classic. Please read this posting from Matt Lebobsky, about the situation and the facts for closing seti classic. See the link I have posted in my last posting. If you have problems to get it to work, please post it in the help desk forums. If you don't post, we can't help you. |

I understand the need for a more reliable interface, but why must BOINC be such a boring one. First off, it is very hard to use and understand. I couldn't figure it out, and so I abandoned the project for over a year. Second, the BOINC software is "cold". I realize that the fun graphics of the classic take more time to program, and processing power was squandered a bit on eye-candy, but it made me feel part of something real. All I see now is that I'm processing data. I don't know why or what or how potentially valuable the experiment is. I realize this is not rational, since any data has some value. But the classic made me feel like an explorer rather than a file clerk. Can't you bring a bit of simplicity and pizzazz back, while maintaining the integrity of the Boinc system? |

There is almost everything very good and easy understanable documentated.
The graphics is still available, but now with a lot of more powerfull background (the BOINC scheduler) with fixes a lot of problems which SETI Classic had. Also, a simplified GUI is in work, and will be release in a future BOINC release. |

I too have tried getting to use bionic, but unfortunately it requires an operating system I do not have. I would truely prefer to have had the old software. If there were truely issues of people cheating, just get rid of the cheaters. Either that or make the new software systems compatible with operating systems that are older (i.e. 9.2 or earlier). SM I have tried the new bionic and to be honest had no end of problems like getting new units getting my old stats back and getting the software to recognise my password. |

There is no chanche, that Berkeley or some volunteers will release a port for Mac OS 8 or 9. It is a lot of work to get BOINC and SETI ported to MacOS 8 and 9. MacOS 8 and 9 are a propertary OS which gave a lot of problems to port to this OS. There are a lot of threads in this forums, about this toppic. Please use the search engine for searching this threads. Also, BOINC has a lot of new features and enhancedments, there is no way back to Classic. There was a lot of other problmes on Classic, not only cheating... Please look at this thread from Matt Lebowski (one of the SETI devs and admins) : http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=24612#209002 |

What "help desk forums"? I've spent the last hour trying to find some info on the many problems of BOINC on the Mac. The best I could find was this Q&A site. I came across a "wiki" of some sort but it was so disorganized that I just gave up. I have noted how you defend the current BOINC as "necessary" but it certainly is self defeating if it causes people to abandon participation. What many of us "old timers" would appreciate is contact with the actual code developers so that we could describe the problems, the context, and (hopefully) get the problems fixed. |

This is the help desk forums. Please look at this installations howto : http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=Installing_the_BOINC_Client_Software_And_Participating_In_A_BOINC_Powered_Project The installation is like every Mac Binary, and the attachment to the project is similiar like on windows or linux. |

What many of us "old timers" would appreciate is contact with the actual code developers so that we could describe the problems, the context, and (hopefully) get the problems fixed. There is a problem with that... there are only 5 developers or so, and they not only have to keep the servers running smoothly, and continue BOINC development, and their paperwork from the University, and any other labors and nuances required in their daily life, that they could not possibly help everyone individually by themselves, or even attempt to. There's just too many users for 5 people to help out full time. So they created a user-to-user help forum like this one. |
