Message 220553 - Posted: 23 Dec 2005, 21:19:13 UTC

I've read a few threads addressing the issue of running Boinc without an Internet connection but what I've read doesn't seem to answer my questions, so please forgive me if it seems this issue has already been addressed.

I have reservations about keeping Boinc online 24/7, in an attempt to deal with this in a comfortable manner I have attempted to lock it in behind a firewall (which cut off its IP/TCP communications), result: Boinc locks up and becomes unresponsive.

So I figured, no biggie I'll just disconnect my Lan Router from the internet giving Boinc IP/TCP access via the router but no internet connection, result: Completed Boinc WU appear to have been lost and crunching seems to stop.

Is it possible to use Boinc to its full potential without haveing to have a live internet connection for it to work with?

Any input appreciated.

Thank You.

Use the setting to only use network at certain times under Your Account -> General Prefs

I have been running 3 computers 24/7 with zone alarm pro, always connected to the net and have never had a problem...

I have many computers running 24/7, behind hardware and software firwalls, virus programs, etc. I have done this for years. I have never gotten a virus or worm that I personally didn't cause myself on getting.

Many companies have their systems running 24/7, and avoid the problems. If you are diligent about keeping your firwall and virus softwares updated, I see no reason for you to have problems.

I agree with Pooh Bear. 5 PCs running 24/7 across several projects all up to date patch and firewall wise and no problems. It can be done!

It can be done easier, better, faster on Linux!
