Message 216835 - Posted: 17 Dec 2005, 22:05:35 UTC - in response to Message 216764.

thanks for the support. Not to be a kill joy, there is no reason why if somone wants to be rude, they cant go to a place designed for it. Ive seen plenty of chatrooms, almost begging you to go in there and have a fight. I say, if that floats your boat, go to a place like that, where thats expected. Perhaps niavely I am here 1. for the science and 2. because I value a sense of community. Community meaning anyone old enough to work a computer keyboard

I have no objection to civility but trying to use children to control my behavior will never work.
1. There are no words that can harm them.
2. You buy the computer, pay for the Internet connection, and allow them to use it unsupervised, then try to use your bad parenting skills to censor me. Ain't going to happen.
3. Hiding the truth from children is bad for them.

Have a nice day,

Again I must say I agree with you, David Stites! I plus'ed your post!

I'm here to have fun and to share some of my thought with some people here. It's naive to think that everybody can get along, and we are not one big family here! And some people come here to bait others into fights, and they can be pretty hard to ignore! Others come to use this board as their personal rostrum for their fads, and some of them develop into trolls.

We have seen a lot here, so I don't think it's realistic to demand from the people here, that this board should be a model of civil and polite behaviour suited for children under a certain age.

'I must say that the behaviour you mention comes as no surprise to me. You say you've never seen anything like this - well, I see it practically everywhere I go'

My Aunt once told me 'People have no shame anymore'.
Unfortunately, in todays society, she was absolutely correct.

Shame

1. A painful sensation excited by a consciousness of guilt or
impropriety, or of having done something which injures
reputation, or of the exposure of that which nature or
modesty prompts us to conceal.
[1913 Webster]

2. Reproach incurred or suffered; dishonor; ignominy;
derision; contempt.
[1913 Webster]

3. The cause or reason of shame; that which brings reproach,
and degrades a person in the estimation of others;
disgrace.
[1913 Webster]

4. The parts which modesty requires to be covered; the
private parts. --Isa. xlvii. 3.
[1913 Webster]

Things to remember when posting
1. there might be kids reading the threads
2. rudness just turns off people who, otherwise might stop and make a meaningfull contribution

So, please refrain from swearing, attacking individuals and remember the Internet is a great leveler - that means we are all as equal as the next person. Online you have no more rights than I do, than the next person

It is only by your online presence that you will be judged online

Generally I agree with your idea about being civil. But, I don't think that people should refrain from swearing or saying certain things for the reason that there might be kids reading the threads. This ain't Sesame Street.

Although I totally agree with you in a sence that I've given you one of the very few plusses I give around here, I must say that the behaviour you mention comes as no surprise to me. You say you've never seen anything like this - well, I see it practically everywhere I go - at every single message board, at every single chat site (with only a few exceptions - so few that I dare to use the phrase "every single"...). But that doesn't make the behaviour any more acceptable - it only comes as less of a surprise..

I might add that I am in the process of migrating non SETI users from a non SETI forum to SETI, and subsequently this forum. They in the whole would be horrified by the rudness in this forum, they however would be very good contributors to both the project, and the forum

I agree wholeheartedly. I have to take regular breaks from these forums. The vitriol can be frightening.

+1 to you :)

Im new here, but I am an active poster in many other forums and blogs, which I would say entitles me to make a qualified observation. I have never seen such blatant rudeness between users of a forum. I am not singling out any one thread, because the rudness and discourteousness is accross many threads

Things to remember when posting
1. there might be kids reading the threads
2. rudness just turns off people who, otherwise might stop and make a meaningfull contribution
