What in the world are you people doing? This BOINC is an absolute piece of garbage.
I've been crunching data for years with SETI.
What happened to my thousands of crunched units?
Why won't BOINC download new units? All I get is BOINC not running or something like that??? I had to reinstal just to get another work unit
I've changed my email address and BOINC still doesn't recocnize it???
Why won't you so called experts answer simple questions on the boards? All we get is a barrage of technical jargon not even pertaining to questions by us non pysisists. We live in the real world you know. We're not all geeky, bispectacled, computer programers.
Why can't you so called experts write a simple, stable program including layman instructions?
I work 18 hours a day online. I don't have the time to figure out how to work this stupid BOINC B.S. I believe in the Seti project and I wish to continue in the effort, but you people gotta get your act together. I'm sure I'm speaking for millions of other who are involved in this program.
We want the old Seti@home project back.

Look at it realistically. If every time we took a step back if we didn't like how some new fangled contraption worked, people wouldn't be using Microsoft (not that it WORKS all the time...), much less the damned laptop since it's brethren the PC was built in a garage. I guess we shouldn't be flying in the 737 now that a Southwest plane skidded off the runway in New York, even though it's one of the safest planes out there. In fact, given the amount of crashing that goes on, we shouldn't even be flying in this thing that can trace its roots to 2 men in a Bicycle shop, much less ride in a big balloon that captures warm air or even a gyrocopter invented by some crazy man calling himself "Da Vinci" in Italy. What would he know about it? What's this insane thing called "Fire"? It destroys millions of trees, houses, farms, so it shouldn't be used even if it warms up our food and makes it safe to eat. Oh, and heaven forbid you breathe in the air, given how smog and the pollutants inside it can get you sick, especially if the Avian flu comes around. I bet you wouldn't use any medicine, knowing how often they tend to act up and give you 4-hour long erections and do some innocuous thing like make you better. Oh no..progress is bad...

Nomad, try http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_email_form.php

btw, this is the Science subforum where people come to discuss science-related subjects.
the Number Crunching subforum or the Questions & Answers section might be a beter place to discuss this particular subject.

Read the first post in this thread, and know the reasons to the end of Seti Classic from one of the developers.
SETI@home classic workunits: 1,985 CPU time: 24,567 hours

Nomad = Obvious Troll.

BOINC is not difficult to get going at all. Everything new is always unfamiliar first. This is more towards people other than Nomad who obviously has nothing good to say.

BOINC Wiki

Anything you need to know about BOINC..and more than you needed to know

If you have a specific problem, then post it so we can help :) telling us you have a problem but not stating wht it is or whats wrong is no way to say its "garbage"

P.S. its the same project, just new software. Same people behind BOINC that were behind SETI Classic.

All of you really should go here and read all about programmers building user interfaces that aren't just poorly defined, but not really designed at all.

A project that relies on volunteerism needs to pay attention just as much as programs that are commercial. You do want people to participate, don't you? As many as possible? Right?

What should have happened is that old-school Seti@home should have popped up a button with the text:

Seti@home is moving to a new software system. Would you like to change to it?

Clicking "OK" would then perform the following:

    1. Download the new software (that it's called BOINC, I care not -- It's SETI from my point of view)
    2. Auto-migrate my account to it, both locally and on the servers
    3. Start downloading and running work units immediately

Later on, people can explore it to their heart's content, maybe add in new projects, whatever.

He has some very valid points. Let's examine them.

What in the world are you people doing? This BOINC is an absolute piece of garbage.
I've been crunching data for years with SETI.
What happened to my thousands of crunched units?

Well? I also have over 2000 work units from the old one. Where are they? Oh, I'm sure there's a link buried somewhere that'll explain it, that one of you can quote from memory. And I'm sure there's another where you can go through 3-8 Herculean tasks to migrate your work unit credit over. Why isn't this automatic? No, sorry, Master Poin-D. The answer isn't technical. Go read the above book.

Why won't BOINC download new units? All I get is BOINC not running or something like that???

I, too, am currently sitting here without it downloading new units. It didn't under "automatic" network detection, so I set it to LAN and it worked for a few days, and has now stopped. I am assuming, for now, that there's a problem at SETI. I will let this theory fester for a few days to see if it starts up again.

But that this happens at all shows the system isn't ready for prime time. Again, why shouldn't the transition be flawless? Every other network program known to man works fine over the Internet. Why? Again, I'm sure someone can quote a link, but remember, the answer isn't actually a technical problem.

Why won't you so called experts answer simple questions on the boards? All we get is a barrage of technical jargon not even pertaining to questions by us non pysisists. We live in the real world you know. We're not all geeky, bispectacled, computer programers.

I am a geeky, bespectacled computer programmer, and I am also confused by it, and irritated by it. Many university programmers have never left the world of toy, show programs and entered the real world where people with money, who pay you, and want code they can use, get hacked off because of things you didn't think of. Some Seti guys may need to go to this trial by fire. I know they have been thru a fascinating trial by fire in learning to prevent spoofs of results, what rates of double-checking are required, what fraction of successful double-checks would cause a particular USER to be considered trustworthy, and thus ease off on double checks of said USER, etc.

You just need that in the other arena as well.

Why can't you so called experts write a simple, stable program including layman instructions?

As I said, better yet would have been a simple "Upgrade Me!" button, then stuff downloads, runs, upgrades, migrates, etc. Certainly a graduate student there could have written a paper on it.

Click on 'your account' at the top of this page. Your classic units are there. They either should be fully updated now or will be soon.
