Hi, I've been putzing around with the BOINC application ever since I got a warning from SETI that they were going to discontinue the old screensaver client a couple of days ago. Since that time, I've tried to find hints and info on the message board to help fix some of the issues I'm running into. Unfortunately, I'm not having much luck find any answer or getting BOINC SETI to work. There seems to be a lot of discussion but no solutions. I can't seem to upload the results. The message I get is "couldn't connect to hostname [setiboinc.sslberkeley.edu] Secheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi failed with a return value of -106. I also can't get the screensaver to start. My computer only has the blank screen as if it is hibernating. BOINC is set to be the default screensaver and the power options are set correctly to allow the screensaver to run. When I come back to the keyboard and the computer 'wakes up', the SETI screensaver shows up 'underneath' once the blank screen is gone. I specifically did not install BOINC as a service because the instructions said that the screensaver doesn't work in this mode. Thanks in advance. Kim |

Sometimes, I begin to wonder if ANYONE reads the threads already existing in these forums! Please see 90% of the threads on the Number Crunching board - Page 1. These will answer your query. {edit: sp} |

Sometimes, I begin to wonder if ANYONE reads the threads already existing in these forums! Hi there, I paged through about a dozen different threads. Most of the posts fell into 2 categories: Category 1 - 'me too' or 'not me": Lot's of "I'm having the same problem", or "mine works fine" with no explanation or examples of how they have things set up. Category 2 - Sniping and blather: These are mostly discussions that degenerate over time to the point of name calling or go the other way to just being silly. Instead of saying 'your answer is in X', it would be much more helpful to put a link in the message along with some pertinent quoted text. Or just put the answer in the reply. It doesn't take any more time to do that than it does to say 'why didn't you look in X' especially when someone says they've been looking all over the site and can't find the info. Most message boards associated with a product or application have a section for technical news, server status, bugs, etc. on the message board itself. Having this info in the 'about' section of a home page may not be the most intuitive location for folks who are looking for answers. I would still like to know how to get the screensaver to work. I've twiddled enough with things (mainly just toggling settings off/on and nothing is really different now) that I have the BOINC logo bouncing around but still no SETI graphics. Any suggestions? Thanks, Kim |

I can't find it either... I haven't got any new work units for some days now... I guess there are still server problems. I found this: December 9, 2005 We have turned off work distribution for a bit to allow result uploads to catch up. We will be extending the deadline for returning results so that the troubles with the result upload handler will not result in lost credit. And this: December 8, 2005 - 03:00 UTC For the past few days our upload/download server has been dropping connections, making for a frustrating experience for everybody involved. We also had our hands full trying to complete the first stage of the master science database merge. I guess they are working on the issue. With the most recent post being 12/9 and it being the weekend and all, maybe work on the situation will resume on Monday. Kim |

I guess this is my own personal thread. The posts are being viewed but no one has anything to add, I guess. I'm still looking for a way to get the SETI graphics to display. Any suggestions, anyone??????? I looked at the WIKI and found a *really* nice document. However, it seems a little out of date. I don't have these choices when I go to the Preferences page on my account. 1. Log on to the SETI@Home Web Site, 2. Click on "Your Account", 3. Click on "SETI@Home Preferences", 4. Click on "Edit SETI@Home preferences", 5. Make your settings match these: SETI@Home Classic "Screen Saver" (Emulation) Preference Settings Name Type Setting Graphics Preference Mandatory "Custom" Text Style Mandatory "Pillars" Graph Style "Surface" Frames per Second Mandatory 30 Maximum CPU 10 or less Graph Grow Time [Any] Graph Hold Time [Any] Transparency of Surfaces [Any] Horizontal Oscillation Period Mandatory 0 Horizontal Oscillation Range Mandatory 0 Vertical Oscillation Period Mandatory 0 Vertical Oscillation Range Mandatory 0 Number of Stars Mandatory 0 Speed of Stars Mandatory 0 Color Preference "Rainbow" |

Sorry I cannot help with your screensaver problem. I really never have even tried it. I don't know many crunchers who do - it just wastes CPU cycles and slows down the processing. As for your -106 upload errors, Wiki has some information on this, but if that doesn't help, at the moment there isn't much anyone can do to help solve upload errors as there is little chance of knowing if anything helps due to the upload server congestion. |

I don't think the screen saver will work unless there are WU's being crunched. I don't use the screen saver but I do remember with classic, if it ran out of work, the screen saver did not work properly. I am assuming this is the same situation. Attach to a different project found here http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ see if your screen saver works with one of these. I guess this is my own personal thread. The posts are being viewed but no |

I don't have these choices when I go to the Preferences page on my account. They match what _I_ see... you have to set "custom" before all the other stuff shows up... |

I don't have these choices when I go to the Preferences page on my account. Hi Bill, I did try to change it to 'custom'. Nothing happened. I thought I'd get more options somewhere. Maybe it's my browser. I'm using Firefox. I'll try again. ------- O.k., I tried again and this time it worked. *sigh* I think Kevin is right, too, about it not working if there isn't anything to crunch. And thanks, Mike about the server info. I know the graphics might slow down the numbers but I like the pretty colors :-D I appreciate all of your help. |
