I heard this on a mainstream radio program earlier this week. Supposedly astronomers in Europe released their final calculations of the probability of this asteroid impacting the eart in 2036. Earlier they feared it may impact Earth in 2029 on its next pass but further calcs satisfied them 2029 impact will not occur. Has anyone else heard anything of this? I heard this on a mainstream radio program earlier this week. It's somewhat frightening. Apparently the big question is whether or not it will pass through the resonance keyhole. There's an article in Astronomy magazine that also talks about it a little. |

Some additional resources and articles about 99942 Apophis (2004 MN4) can be found at Asteroid and Comet Impact Hazards |

ESA has also some project for deflecting asteroids, see ESA selects targets for asteroid-deflecting mission Don Quijote article from 26 September 2005 More info about the DON QUIJOTE mission can be found here |

OH...by the way . Don't forget that there will be some screamer out there that captures the media's attention and proclaims we should 'not pollute space with nukes'......Call me a prognosticator...but that will happen. Sad but true. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data! I did NOT authorize this belly writing! ![]() |

Sad but true. We could always launch the anti-space nuke advocates at the asteroid. :) You will be assimilated...bunghole! ![]() |

Sad but true. LOL...do you think they would have enough mass to make a difference? They sure do talk alot. I think that their own opinion of themselves might just carry enough weight to get the job done... Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data! Sad but true. They amount of hot air they expell should be enough to nudge the asteroid off course. :) You will be assimilated...bunghole! ![]() |

OH...by the way . Don't forget that there will be some screamer out there that captures the media's attention and proclaims we should 'not pollute space with nukes'......Call me a prognosticator...but that will happen. Sad but true. To be sure, but there's no shortage of politicians who'll use that to their advantage. "Weak on asteroid defense..." and all that. Nah, given we were warned that 100 megaton bombs would produce craters 19 miles in diameter or something, I wouldn't worry too much about a 300m pipsqueak. |
