Downloads listed on results page don't necessarily mean they are running and will join the upload queue.

I have 7 WUs on my results page, 2 of which are trying to upload and 5 of which are trying to download....

Anders,

At last some-one has some sense !

If everybody tells everyone else to lay-off SETI for now, (f'r instance, "suspend" SETI, esp. if you've completed all the WU's) and switch to "no new work", then we relieve the strain (a bit or a lot) on SETI and give it a chance.

All this rubbish about forcing SETI maintainers to "fix" the problem and yet lots of users don't give them a chance.

I'm even surprised they kept it "up" and running. Would have thought a complete shutdown (as far as the outside world is concerned) would have helped, so they get over the "hump" and come back ready for the Xmas holidays (when I'm sure no-one will be around to fix things !)

And a few other projects might just benefit (which was the whole point of BOINC in the first place - if something goes "down", then you switch to another project).

Makes sense y'know.

Happy Xmas!

Timbo

regards,
Tim

Is it not possible until further to stop the transfers of the finished work units - mark the results in the transfer secton - and resume the transfers later? I tried to do this to one result but was unable to see what happened with the result.

AFAIK the downloads for the moment are handled by one server and the uploads by another. So if the above is possible it would ease the load on the upload server.
Kind regards
Kirsten

I'm on NNW also until they sort it out -- plenty of other projects to work for... :-)

Arrrgggghhhhh you got me... I´m evil.

Maybe you have to keep an eye on me.

I stoped my connection, when the idea came to me and I wrote my mail.

How could I do it before?

If you want to help, then take your SETI@BOINC offline until you run out off UW´s, and give the servers some time to recover.

Part of the problem is that everybody is fighting to do more SETI-work, while doing the opposit is the solution.

This will spread out the load a little.

Ha ha.....look how many WU's alo_dk downloaded today on 1 computer....about 20.

I guess you should practice what you preach!

When are you going to stop?

As long as I am not trying to DL or Upload then thats less traffic the servers have to deal with.

Your existing uploads will continue trying. You will just stop any further downloads, which when crunched, will turn into new uploads :)

Very true, However, I do not have any uploads waiting. :)

Well it won't cure the problem but it sure won't so any harm.

I've set all mine to "no new work" for now. Even 1% of users may be more than 1% of hosts. Every little helps here I reckon.

I agree with that also. i have set mine to no new work also. As long as I am not trying to DL or Upload then thats less traffic the servers have to deal with. It would not harm any at all but it would cut down the time this process is taking.

And if you run multiple projects what difference does it make to the user? No idle CPUs here :)

How many of the 600,000 or so hosts are actually run by people who read the forums? Maybe 1%? Will a 1% reduction in load matter?

Great!
This remembers me Martin Gardner and a lot of articles about Games Theory.
Yes, the solution can be that everybody stop for a while to crunch ... but .. if I stop but others no..... ?

Bye,
Francesco
