Here is what the BOINC client looks like on my system (8 KB):

Why doesn't the client use the system colors instead of assuming that everyone uses a white background?

It's not a showstopper, but it does make it very difficult to read the messages.

That's a good question.

Perhaps the possibility to choose the colors by the user will be implemented at a later release. You should keep in mind, that this project has just begun and changes are sure to come. I'd like to change the colors to something else than the default ones aswell though :)
