I'm glad the mystery of your working account got cleared up. As to the rest of your problem: The problem is that the BOINC manager is tacking on 'c:\\program files\\BOINC\\' to the start of every URL it tries to send to the browser - from the Projects tab, Web sites buttons, from Help, from the attach to project wizard - but only the URLs that should launch a page in the browser.have you tried Wander's suggestions? I just had a stray thought, that perhaps there are two accounts set up, with you posting on one and working on the other... To confirm or refute this, would you copy from your Messages tab the lines that you see when you first start up BOINC? I do in fact have two accounts... a legacy of a crash while trying to register with BOINC the first time. I just discovered this sad fact today, when I went looking for my statistics online. The first account (raven (at) web.net) is my classic SETI account, which is not being used by BOINC. The other (david (at) badke.ca) is the one BOINC is using. As far as I know, there is no way to merge the two. If I kill one, I lose my classic SETI records; kill the other, I lose my BOINC records. That's why it appears I have no connected computers. Doesn't matter - that's not the problem I am having. BOINC is doing what it should be doing as regards to actually processing work; it gets work, sends results, they show up on the badke.ca account. The problem is that the BOINC manager is tacking on 'c:\\program files\\BOINC\\' to the start of every URL it tries to send to the browser - from the Projects tab, Web sites buttons, from Help, from the attach to project wizard - but only the URLs that should launch a page in the browser. This is seriously wierd. It is doing it for both projects, and the BOINC manager is the only program doing this. I could completely wipe BOINC off my system and start over, but getting rid of all traces of it would be a lot of work. The problem is annoying, but maybe not THAT annoying! Hi David, Could you check a file named master_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml in your BOINC installation folder? It should contain something like this: <scheduler>http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi</scheduler> You mentioned that you have a Apache server installed in this machine? It's a longshot, but it seems that BOINC manager mistakenly took your own machine as the UCB server. Very strange, almost as if the DNS pointed right back at you. What's the options selected in the BOINC manager's screen? Regards, Wander Edit Just something I remembered, has your HOSTS file been changed? |

Thinking about it some more, it could be the installation is corrupt, so if 1 and/or 2 doesn't work, try uninstalling, delete any residual BOINC folders (reg cleanup optional), and reinstall then reattach (making sure credentials are correct).I think I'd recommend going right to uninstalling, deleting, and starting from scratch. Agreed, but I figured I'd list the TS options from least intrusive to full blown. :-) EDIT: Again your edit is a good point, a snippet from the actual message log or the host ID's would be very helpful. I just had a stray thought, that perhaps there are two accounts set up, with you posting on one and working on the other... To confirm or refute this, would you copy from your Messages tab the lines that you see when you first start up BOINC? Specifically, the ones that look like: 12/30/2005 7:54:02 AM|climateprediction.net|Computer ID: 236502; location: home; project prefs: default 12/30/2005 7:54:02 AM|SETI@home|Computer ID: 443034; location: home; project prefs: default With that, we can check where the work is coming from. I am connected to two projects: SETI and ClimatePrediction. Both can download work units, process work units, upload results. There is no problem with actually doing project work. The only errors in the messages pane are related to the ongoing problems with not being able to connect to SETI to get more work. The point being made here is that as far as the project servers are concerned you don't appear to have any computers attached, regardless of the fact that the BOINC client thinks it is attached correctly. Try clicking your name link, no computers are shown for your account. I would try resetting the project first, and if that doesn't work then detach and reattach to SETI, making sure your authentication credentials are correct. Thinking about it some more, it could be the installation is corrupt, so if 1 and/or 2 doesn't work, try uninstalling, delete any residual BOINC folders (reg cleanup optional), and reinstall then reattach (making sure credentials are correct). HTH, Alinator PS: The project seems to have gotten a little squirrelly now over the holiday weekend, so this might not be the best time to be doing troubleshooting. Especially, if you're pretty sure you've done everything correctly. ;-) |

The only errors in the messages pane are related to the ongoing problems with not being able to connect to SETI to get more work. Both attached projects have the same problem, so it has to be BOINC that is screwed up. Even trying to confirm after attaching to a project tries to use an URL with c:\\program files\\BOINC\\http://.... added to the beginning. Is there perhaps some config file or registry entry that is causing this? I haven't been able to find anything. David |

What I have done (with no success): You've got BOINC installed, preferences set up, made offerings to the gods... you don't mention attaching to a project? I'm not sure what work BOINC is fetching, but I don't see a computer attached to your account, and without that nothing's going to happen. From BOINC manager, in the menu bar click on Projects, select Attach to Project, and follow the prompts. From the Messages tab, copy the last twenty or so messages that you see there and paste them into a reply so we can see what BOINC is doing (or not doing). MJ |

What version of BOINC are you installing? Have you tried a fresh download? This is a new problem for me, I haven't seen it before. 8-) MJ[/quote] Sorry for the delay in responding... What I have done (with no success): - uninstalled BOINC, re-installed - Set Commands | Network activity... to always available / based on preferences - Set Options | Connection to Automatic / Use my LAN connection - No proxy set - Shut down my local Apache server - Sacrificed small furry animals I am on a broadband (cable) Internet connection, two systems on a LAN, Windows XP, BOINC 5.2.13. BOINC fetches and returns work, but no links to web sites work (including the link to the BOINC site found in the Help | About BOINC dialog!). David |

The localhost reference means that the Boinc Manager is connected to the boinc.exe running on your computer (on port 127.0.0.1). That is normal an is what should be displayed there when you first install the software. As for the path with the URL appended to the end, that is a new one for me. Do you connect through a proxy or go through any hoops to connect to the internet? Proud member of SETI.USA |

Localhost is your computer. Boinc.exe (the Boinc daemon) runs on your computer, so Boincmgr.exe (the Boinc Manager GUI) tries to communicate with it. It's localhost, or 127.0.0.1, because you can open multiple Boinc Manager screens to remotely control other PCs running BOINC via your network. Then you can point the Select Computer option to represent the name or IP address of that computer. Ok, that out of the way, your linking problem. You do have an internet connection open at that moment? If you open Boinc Manager, Commands, is it set to "Network activity always available"? What's the setting under Options, Options, Connections set to? |

To take the second part of your question first, "localhost" is indeed correct for BOINC Manager to be connected to, it's referring to the location of the BOINC Daemon which is doing the actual work of the interface. If you are on a local network, you can have it look at another computer on your net, and it'll show that instead. What version of BOINC are you installing? Have you tried a fresh download? This is a new problem for me, I haven't seen it before. 8-) MJ |

I have installed the latest BOINC, did the stuff to connect to my old SETI@Home account, it seems to be processing data, but... Anything in the BOINC Manager that tries to access a web site, including help and all of the buttons under "Web sites" on the Projects page, instead of using a proper URL like http://setiathome.berkeley.edu tries to access c:\\program files\\BOINC\\http://setiathome.berkeley.edu !!! Annoying... I can't figure out how to make the manager believe the SETI site is not on my computer. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing. Windows XP system. Any suggestions? By the way, the BOINC manager status bar always says it is connected to "localhost", which doesn't seem right. David |
