When browsing for an icon, try opening an executable.

It is possible to edit / replace the icon in an executable with the right tools.

Man, I looked for that for about a 1/2 hour. I wonder where that icon is hidden??

Heh... re-install and take the Repair option. 8-)

You guys realize that by adding more options you're making it more complicated and harder to use don't you? LOL

Comeon, someone try the solution I offered farther on up. I want to know if it's possible to put the dish in the spot of the B.

Ok Tony, I tried it. It only changed the icon on the shortcut in the startup menu, not in the system tray. Sorry!

MJ (now I have to figure out where that icon is so I can change it back... lol..)

Fair enough. Not my intention to be belittling, demeaning or trivializing. I just wanted to point out that BOINC is not SETI, and SETI is not BOINC. It is my belief (from first hand knowledge), most people don't understand that. They're coming from a dedicated SETI Classic perspective and don't understand their horizons have just shifted back about 50 miles. That's all.

FWIW, I did not take it that way. Just think the idea itself is a decent one. I just like to have lots of choices! ;)

Most of the Classic people coming over are by definition single project SETI-centric crunchers. It would certainly make them feel a little more at home to have a familiar icon in the tray.

WOW - maybe the icon can change depending on what project is currently being crunched!

Regardless if BOINC can run other projects, an icon is simply aesthetics, like painting your house, and does matter to the user. I think it'd be a great idea to have every project come up with their own icon so that a user can change it to whatever they want. We can personalize our computers, why not an icon in a volunteer project. More things should allow personalization.

How about we just answer the question with "I don't know", BUT I've done some digging. I can't try this as I don't have classic installed, so I don't have access to that Icon.

use explore go to:

C:\\documents and setting\\<your name>\\startmenu\\programs\\startup folder you should see a picture of the B in the systray. right click on it, properties, shortcut, pick "Change Icons" then Browse for the dish and use that.

Please tell me if this works, I've invested some time trying to find this answer

thanks

tony

There's not much point in doing that. BOINC is merely a science application manager. Aside from SETI, there are presently SEVEN other projects that are managed by the BOINC manager. A user can enroll in any or all of them. The Manager controls when to wake them up for processing, and when to put them to sleep, and handles I/O for WU uploading/downloading.

So the icon that represents the application daemon, or GUI, is in all actuality quite immaterial if not outright irrelevent.

But maybe he only crunches SETI and REALLY WANTS a SETi-based icon.

When will you people learn to READ THE QUESTION before unloading....

I would love to replace the BOINC "B" with the dish-icon from the Classic Seti@home. Has anyone tried? succeeded? There was an icon-file, as I recall, in the classic program-folder (a gif, perhaps?). I thought I might copy it into the new seti or BOINC folders, but they contain no such image files that I could detect. Any ideas welcome. Thanks.
