I, too, find it VERY disappointing.

Anyone want to take bets on when it will be resolved?
I say by this weekend (including) it will be back on track.

I don't think they will have it completely fixed until classic is completely shut down, & the hardware that it uses can be utilised for seti/boinc (so my bet is (hopefully sooner) January sometime)

i think its pathetic that a 10kb file cant be uploaded for 4 days i have nearly 50 jobs waitin to go things cant be that congested

Yes, it is pathetic... until you realize that there are over 2 MILLION 10 KB files out there waiting to be uploaded! And suddenly it turns into over 20 GB. It is all a matter of perspective. We as individual users have a very limited perspective on the whole project.

Message 205462 - Posted: 7 Dec 2005, 6:15:42 UTC - in response to Message 205395.

SETI classic used to be my favorite, It's what got me (and many, many others) into shared computing. Over a year ago I first 'tasted' BOINC and found it not yet ready for prime time. Starting earlier this year I tried again, and began migrating over to SETI BOINC. In April I added Einstein to the mix as it became apparent that SETI BOINC was trying to do a bit too much with a lot too little.

I added Climate in July by which time it was apparent that having only SETI BOINC and one other project might be a case of not having a 'backup project' as SETI BOINC was going thru a rather extended bad stretch which extended into September.

Back in May my overall BOINC mix was 85% SETI, 15% Einstein, along with a lot of not yet migrated SETI Classic. As the SETI BOINC problems got worse over the summer, I shifted more resources to Einstein and Climate (and migrated over more and more of my SETI classic systems). By the end of June the BOINC split was 66% SETI, 34% Einstein. By the end of July it was 42% SETI, 50% Einstein, 8% Climate. By the end of August it was 30% SETI, 47% Einstein, 23% Climate. Einstein has become my favorite project -- if only because of its sustained reliability (under a much lighter load that SETI of course). Now my farm split is 21% SETI, 64% Einstein, 15% Climate.

If this outage persists thru the weekend (my bet is that it will as the tech notes indicate a LOT of software and hardware problems to be coped with), I expect my splits will move Climate over SETI as my #2 project.

The thing that drives me these days is project reliability and in that regard, unfortunately, SETI doesn't get good marks. The thing that makes that more painful is that there are/were a LOT of SETI classic folks out there and while migrating them to BOINC is a good thing, right now, they may not be all that aware of the non-SETI alternatives (user base at this point is 305K SETI, 76K Einstein, 62K Climate) and so try SETI BOINC, and get frustrated and go away -- lost to the collective computing projects, and that is very unfortunate....

Seti is my personal favorite, but I also enjoy not letting my computer sit idle doing nothing. If I can contribute where I can, I will. Seti, Rosetta, Einstein, and Seti Beta are all things that interest me though, so thats why I crunch them.

Unfortunately when projects go down, you don't have work, your computer sits doing nothing, why waste the idle time. Many others have CPDN as a backup, as their WU's are I think 1 year long to complete.

I agree, everyone has their opinion, and this is mine. Thanks for listening.

Jeremy

You have to remember that UCB is the benchmark on How Much you Can do with How Little.

Have they ever had the upload computer working properly? Seems like they are always having probs.

The September outage finally scrolled off BOINCSTATS.. The October Outage was getting close... Simular issues, according to Tech News... The servers can not handle the stress... Yes they are forcing Seti Classic to Migrate into a system that can barely handle "pre-migration"... I know, Beat the Dead Horse and ask why it can not run... Now Both are suffering!

Oops, Infiniate wisdom and I can get two more scientific papers out of this... It Still Begs the question, What Happened to the Other 5+ Million Users that could not make it work?

Yes I know I am being "negative." UCB deserves it! FLAME On!

SETI BOINC has been working extremely well lately. Periodically there are problems but Classic had a lot of problems in the beginning also. Most of the problems SETI@Home has are caused by it's huge popularity and lack of funding.

its easy to just say attach to another project many of us have but personally i prefer seti it's what i like.
over on another thread it has been proposed that seti put a bittorent link for downloading boinc software i agree it would freee up the servers alot .

As its been discussed in This Thread, it is being looked at. Give it time, it will work out fine. IF your worried about not having anything to crunch, look Here, you can find many other projects to keep busy on.

Personally, I am attached to 4, but not all 4 run all the time. Right now I'm crunching Seti and Rosetta, once those are out, I switch to Einstein and Seti Beta. Just how I want to operate. Take care, keep crunching.

Everybody is waiting for results to upload, so you are not missing out on anything.

If you are about to run out of work, consider attaching to another project - at a lower resource share if you prefer. The resource shares are floating point numbers, and just about any ratio of shares should be workable.

You should join another project and give it a low resource share, that way you get to crunch something.

I'm also waiting for the upload function to take the backlog. Like the others who have been waiting for days I sure hope the problem is fixed soon.
