Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

NOW there's even a new title to the thread (What was wrong with the old one? for crying out loud). FYI: "OK it's open for complaining!!!" You could've just said "crybabies" and I'd know for sure who you were talkin' to, and all that. Yep. (nods head affirmative).

What's going on with that? EVERYBODY and their mother's uncles are ALWAYS complaining. They're complaining about this, or they're complaining about that. But NOBODY is talking about me, well, unless they're complaining. But you see that's just the point, there's way too much complaining going on now adays. I don't know. Maybe its just me.

As you were.

Message for the little WOLF with "Brick"...I will be glad to drop it on your nose if you like.. The MD5's I get are because the server is chopping the data packet being returned on my download's I have about 30 in my results file to prove it... As for those of us that are as you put "BITCHING" I earned it I been here since 1999 with one machine and I been doing DP since you were in JR High I assume... Ha Haaaaaa.. No brick intended...

Well unless you are in your 80's I doubt it :)

Not quite in the 80's, Just a young 62 and I started writing code for mod 30 native and ibm 7074,705, 360, 370, 390, 3090..PC's dos, windows, os/2, and in all 18 different lang's and 6 report lang's.. wrote fixes for IBM, CA and the co's I worked for to and including the dasd mngt sys a part of which is in IBM's HSM, a system to undue load mods and reconstruct them on different mode of Disk drives when IBM didn't have any software for the drive yet. Have full discipline of "Networking" on NCR, IBM, and 3M system both data and video, satilite transmissions etc.

They know lots of somethings are broke.. They know there is a rash of issues. They know they can only solve them one at a time. Bandwidth is choked now and will stay that way till the backlog is cleared.

P.S. I know also and so does at least half the world...

Now that this thread is unstickied lets just let it die :)

May you rest in peace...! :)

OK Here goes my complaint:

When looking at the cricket graphs you'll notice three things:

1.) When boinc/seti is off, we're getting about 20MBit/s of "bits out". This is classic seti traffic

2.) with boinc/seti on we have been going down from over 50 MBits/s to about 30MBits/s
This means about 10Mbits/s for boinc/seti WU downloads, being roughly equivalent to 300,000 WU per day.
This is _way_ below the max of 1,000,000 per day that has been posted here.
We have done much better in the past!

3.) We're nowhere near the possible max bandwith of 90-100 Mbits.
This is a gigabit ethernet port that should well be able to support 100Mbit netto data rate.

My guess of what's happening is the following: the boinc/seti clients are choked with waiting for failing up/downloads, which is preventing them from downloading work.

If you don't get this resolved by today, shut OFF the frigging splitters and let everything calm down!

There maybe 300,000 WU ready to send, but we're actually getting much less work handed out than a week before.

Regards Hans Dorn

probably it is better that seti institute should shut down whole boinc (or boinc seti section) op for weeks or a month and arrange and test everything then start for normal op for guaranteed op of at least for few months. otherwise this occasional system breaks hurt badly the less interested members and eventually many of them just forget the project. that is why when you see any team list just 10-30% of team members do regular daily job and rest of them do occasional job or just do 0.

or if it is realy financing related thing then why does not the institute announce some fundraisings...

or if it is people thing then it is better the same culture of members comment on this side (because i did some interesting cultural clash with few active seti guys (moslty from USA) once and according to them they are always right and aliens are always not right something!)

also there are many mighty software company teams around here why does not the institute communicate with them and get some amount of friendly help/cooperation for its software coding issues. i guess most of these break-ups are basically some coding and bugs!

Ouch. Unfortunately the stereotype of the ugly American is sometimes accurate. Please don't let a few loudmouths ruin your opinion of all of us.

Actually, most of the issues are hardware related, involving aging equipment being pushed to (and past) its limits, file systems that are barely adequate, and Sun's TCP/IP implementation. The amazing thing about S@H is not that it works as well as it does, the amazing thing is that it works at all. In some ways it's a victim of its own success, as many of the problems have to do with how well various aspects of the system scale up with the number of users. According to Boincstats, S@H has added about 50K members in 2 weeks, and the system is groaning under the strain. Once the hardware from Classic is moved to BOINC, that should ease the load. There may be other issues going on as well; from this side, we simply don't know. Meanwhile, they're working on it, credit will still be granted for work, all is well.

Oops, sorry, this is the complaints thread.... Hey! How come my cornflakes are all soggy? CURSE THESE SLOW UPLOADS!!!!

Cheers,
Brian

many alien culture representing seti members want their different opinion to be heard, but 99% of the times they recieve OUCH behaviour/reaction from mothership (in seti case) guys.

I think this is why most people are so upset. In the real world this would have been fixed a long time ago.

If this was a commercial project, the budget would be two or three orders of magnitude larger, and there would be a dozen people doing what one Matt Lebofsky or Jeff Cobb has on his plate.

I'm sure The SETI Institute doesn't announce fundraising or shut down for testing because the project does not belong to The SETI Institute.

... and it's really hard to do the testing you suggest without a load -- the kind of live load we have right now.

... and besides, work is getting done.

D@mm Brian

Now you are going to have to go and find two New Users to Help... You should have known better about this posting in a Complain/Whine Thread....

BTW I do have several workunits that have been trying for 3 hours to get uploaded! But then with as many Retries that are happening it continues to get worse... I have seen that the connection happens... Auth happens and then the thread dies...

BAD Seti BOINC... This is the August problem...

Ned

You should have said that Matt is getting Old and Slow, He can not keep up with the work of ten people that would be doing this, if it was properly funded!

Matt L and Jeff, YOUR days off are Canceled the Users DEMAND IT! 12/7/365 unless it is a Leap Year..

Hello Everyone

Satisfaction!

IF I look at these posts and have my opinions... Then I have the satisfaction of knowing that when David A dies and he approaches the Pearly Gates for Judgement... It does not matter whether Heaven or Hell... We Will watch Saint Peter, Raise an eyebrow and the Calmly State "Scientest, Seti, Academic" hmmmm

NO matter, whether he is accepted in Heaven or Hell... He will be spending all his time in the afterlife Fixing Seti BOINC!

WE just have to be Patient! ROTFLMAF

Orail

Welcome and I hope that I read it correctly.

So as your Complaint was noticed... I now run the risk of being classifed as a cheerleader...

There are many people that "attempt" to help and are not bound by any cultural problems... I have a silly bad habit of when I see someone unjustly being abused I take offense and then make my statement!

I do know that beside getting things translated "live" and lack of knowledge of other languages... Getting a point across becomes tougher...

Personally I am more more concerned about Users, no matter where they come from the the Seti BOINC Project... IF within what I see they being abused then I will raise an immediate objection...

There are Many People here that help, they also try to work through any language barriers that happen... There are also poeple that have little respect for anyone... Yes we all have good and bad days... The good people do keep trying...

So, Now I guess that I have to go find two New Users Help because this is Not a Complaint...

Ouch. Unfortunately the stereotype of the ugly American is sometimes accurate. Please don't let a few loudmouths ruin your opinion of all of us.
