I posted here and then noticed that about 75% of the errors I'm seeing upon attempting to upload data on my Windows machines are 500 errors. I am not experiencing any problems uploading on Linux. Here is my info:

1. Cable
2. Cable modem: Motorola SB5120
3. Yes.
4. Router and switch in line.
5. Yes

Going to bed now. I'll check back in the AM and see if this has been fixed. If not, please let me know if I can be of use in finding the source of the errors.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Hi,

I'm getting both 500 and -106 errors since yesterday.
I've done no changes to the system for a long time and the errors goes for all 5 host (WinXP & Win2K) running SETI.

I have an ADSL line connected 24/7

Message 203636 - Posted: 5 Dec 2005, 11:28:39 UTC - in response to Message 203065.

A few of us are trying to track the cause of 500 errors.
It appears that it may have something to do with MTU sizes.

Are these connection erors related to the current server response problems, and the lack of being able to upload WU results? Or is this an entirely separate issue?

As you gather I am not having any 500 (etc) error codes.

NOTE: Apologies for seeking a response at this current time.

Message 203665 - Posted: 5 Dec 2005, 12:32:57 UTC - in response to Message 203065.

I have one upload and one download stalled at the moment.
No problems with other BOINC projects.

A few of us are trying to track the cause of 500 errors.
It appears that it may have something to do with MTU sizes.

To get to the source of this I have several questions.

1. What type of connection do you have to your ISP?
(dial-up, DSL, Cable, Other [specify other]

ADSL

2. What equipment are you using to access your ISP?
(cable modem [manufacturer, mode], DSL Modem, Other)

ADSL Moden (BT Voyager)

3. Are you running other applications that could consume bandwidth? (bit torrent, win mx, napster, etc)

No

4. Are you connected directly to your cable/dsl modem or is there a router or switch in line?

Directly

5. Are you willing to share a network trace with one of us?

I'd prefer not.

To get to the source of this I have several questions.

1. What type of connection do you have to your ISP?
(dial-up, DSL, Cable, Other [specify other]

DSL (384k/256k)(1/4 of a T1)

2. What equipment are you using to access your ISP?
(cable modem [manufacturer, mode], DSL Modem, Other)

DSL Modem

3. Are you running other applications that could consume bandwidth? (bit torrent, win mx, napster, etc)

I do have a TeamSpeak server but it does not use much bandwidth as most of the users are only connected from about noon until about 2 am.

4. Are you connected directly to your cable/dsl modem or is there a router or switch in line?

Linksys 4 port broadband firewall Router

5. Are you willing to share a network trace with one of us?

CW, another strange one for you, i've only just started getting these 500 errors, I've been fine lately and had no trouble at all, but now on one of my hosts it's failing to upload with a 500 error each time, yet everything was fine last time i checked that host yesterday

so i'm strongly led to believe this is a server config/bandwith issue, especially as i have 2 uploads failing with "error 500", but a download failing with "system I/O" NOT error 500
I've changed *nothing* that host, i've not even logged on to it for about 2 weeks lol
i've tried rebooting it thou, didn't help

my info:
1. What type of connection do you have to your ISP?

ADSL - dedicated router

2. What equipment are you using to access your ISP?
(cable modem [manufacturer, mode], DSL Modem, Other)

The end point in my network is a Linksys WAG54G (not the 2nd edition/version, but the original, 1st one, if that helps)

3. Are you running other applications that could consume bandwidth? (bit torrent, win mx, napster, etc)

just checked my usage, it's minimal, all that i've done today is browse the web, and have my RSS reader running in the background, but that uses nothing,
total bandwidth is 512Kbps down, and 256Kbps up, on a 40:1 connection ratio (set by ISP) and boinc pretty much has the whole thing to itself, up/down-loads are usually quick when things worked

4. Are you connected directly to your cable/dsl modem or is there a router or switch in line?

You'll love this... simple anser, yes both, but more details...
my hosts are all part of one LAN (normal 100Mbps ethernet) all joining at a Dell PowerConnect 2124 Switch, my local router is a computer (can give specs if needed) with a 3Com 3C905C-TX NIC, running MS routing and remote access with NAT on windows 2003 server, which has a Linksys WMP54G wireless card in it to connect to a Buffalo WLA-G54C relay wireless access point (with latest firmware), which connects to another identical Buffalo box (using Wireless Distribution/distributed System (WDS)) (my house is made of granite, so cat5 wasn't an option, and the reason for my LAN connecting to another, then the net, is that i want to keep my LAN seperate, the wireless one is what my parents use (i'm a young'n)) which connects via ethernet to the Linksys WAG54G box, which is a modem/router combo, as said the last buffalo box connects using ethernet, so the wireless ability of the external router isn't an issue, it's disabled on the router
my ISP specified connection settings:
ATM settings – VPI 0, VCI 38 (0/38)
DSL modulation – DMT
ADSL type – RFC2364 PPPoA
Encapsulation – VCMUX
Authentication – PAP

I'm not sure of the firmware status of the linksys router as i don't have access to the config interface on that box, i'd have to ask about that

5. Are you willing to share a network trace with one of us?

performed on the host in question... (for some reason it sees my own router (the computer router) as a hop, but not the external linksys one, hop 2 is a router of my ISP i presume as that's not my public IP addy (in the same 82.112 range thou)

I have also this problem and so have almost all of my team members....

I'd say it is a server problem or a router close to the server.
we get the sam message here in sweden and in canada....

Error 500

and also when we connect we get speeds at amazing 0.03kb/sec

I hope this problem will be fixed soon

A few of us are trying to track the cause of 500 errors.
It appears that it may have something to do with MTU sizes.

To get to the source of this I have several questions.

1. What type of connection do you have to your ISP?
(dial-up, DSL, Cable, Other [specify other]

2. What equipment are you using to access your ISP?
(cable modem [manufacturer, mode], DSL Modem, Other)

3. Are you running other applications that could consume bandwidth? (bit torrent, win mx, napster, etc)

4. Are you connected directly to your cable/dsl modem or is there a router or switch in line?

5. Are you willing to share a network trace with one of us?

If you don't want to answer these questions on line e-mail the answer to me at boinc@emacolet.com I set this address up on my mail server to get these answers.

Your answers and any traces you will share will be kept bewteen me, you and the developers of this project.

No changes to system, which is from work with T1 connection on a network through Cisco switches, etc. No indications of bandwidth overloading on the system, as I am PC tech and have no reports of "I can't get to the Internet <whine>" from any of mt 250 users.

No changes to the system/network over the weekend.

My two computers (home and work, Mac and PC) have been unable to upload anything since yesterday (Sunday, the 4th) And now I'm not able to download anything of new work. I probably have 7-8 units total worked and ready to be uploaded.

It's NOT my 'puters or my network.

"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

I can add this detail.

Looking at "Tranfer" tab in Boinc manager, I can see the result starting with 0.00% in the "progress" column, than 2-3% for some seconds and finally it stops with 100% with a new retry scheduled. In theese cases I get the 500 error.
If Progress is always blocked on 0.00%, I get I/O error.
Bye

Nobody is saying it's YOUR computer or YOUR network; however there is a lot of copper and fiber between you and Berkely. The more we know the easier it will be to track down the issue. Without the information I have received we didn't know if it was locatized to DSL, Cable, Dial-up users, specific routers, modems or switches.

At the moment the focus is on the SETI servers because it's not localized to one or two ISPs, service types, or equipment types.

For that matter at this time it's happening to everybody!!!
