I think that PC needs a voodoo lady dancing around it waving a naked chicken around!

(scientific answer)

A voodoo chicken being waved by what? We can't have that here - there's no room.

o.k., so BOINC runs. It also answers my question concerning if possibly the time might be set incorrectly (there was an issue on a different thread where somebody was connected to a network server, and the host's time was incorrect, this caused a failure to connect to localhost condition (go figure, eh?)

Just for poops, and grins, see what happens if you launch BOINC Manager now from Start, programs, BOINC (ensure that neither BOINC nor Boincmgr is running in task list before doing this).

There has been cases where this works. Why? Because it has (why question success). I'm praying that it works for you now.

If BOINC Manager will connect to localhost (either normally, or Ageless' way), immediately suspend BOINC, disable BOINC network connection, and terminate BOINC (gracefully via exit option of BOINC Manager icon). Ensure that BOINC is configured in MSCONFIG to load at startup, and reboot.

'fraid your prayers weren't answered on this occasion.

What if you run BOINC through DOS and then start Boinc Manager?

No help - whether leaving boinc running, or with it stopped. (Starting manager from the Start|Run dialog). Manager still freezes on startup.

Done save two things; I haven't defragged - if a program is so flakey that it needs the disk defragging before it will consent to run on a disk with over 3 GB free space, much of it never used, then it's got other problems.

I am also running it manually after logging on, at least until we can get something working.

No change, however. There was only one BOINC key left, identifying its place on the Program Files menu.

Robin

You only got 3 GB of free space????

On that partition, the C: partition, which it claism to prefer to run on; the drive is an 80GB drive, partitioned ibto a number of paritions.

How big is the drive?

The partition is about 5GB.

If that drive is bigger then 6 GB you have some tweaking to due? BOINC willnot run if 50% of your disk space is not free and by default that is calculated on a 100GB drive.

Log into your account on the Web Site and set the Disk and Memory use accordingly.

See if that helps.

Since it isn't connecting to localhost, let alone the 'Net, I suspect it won't make a difference, but...

No, just launch a DOS window (Start, programs, DOS), and navigate to the BOINC directory, and execute BOINC. You'll have to copy the messages using the crude DOS screen-scrape functionality (click the dashed "mark" box, and then drag the box to cover the text, click copy), and then paste it into Notepad to format it if you have to. Copy and paste that into a reply here. That'll give us an idea what's going on w/the daemon at least.

Took me awhile to find the thread I was on where I seen this, but the following straight from Rom Walton (some guy) [per message #195214 - the thread having quite a tragic end IMHO]:

Can you do the following commands and post back what the response from boinc is?

Click Start, all programs, accessories, command prompt
in the command prompt type:

cd /d "c:\\program files\\boinc"

hit enter.

boinc.exe

hit enter.

Now boinc should print out a bunch of stuff if it is able to run.

EDIT: nevermind the /D parameter (that's an NT based command, and so neither will the quotes required with the chdir command.)

The only thing I can think of from a diagnosis perspective, trying running BOINC.EXE from a DOS window and see what errors you get. That may prove helpful. Because what I'm discerning here is that BOINC Manager is running, its hanging trying to talk to the daemon. That needs to be isolated.

Just taking a quick look before going to work...

I'll try that when I get back this evening. Is there a "verbose" switch on boinc?

Absolutely pardon my obtuseness here, but you are attempting to run BOINC local, and resident on a Win98 machine, or are you trying to run BOINC resident on a Win98 machine remotely from a Linux box?

Yes I am trying to run locally, resident on the Win98SE box.

I'm trying not to declare the obvious, but with the registy clean, BOINC install folder deleted, on top of a clean Windows install, an empty Windows\\Temp folder, a HOSTS file that has the first entry of 127.0.0.1 localhost, BOINC should install flawlessly (single user, no screensaver, launch at login), you should be able to "connected to localhost" by launching BOINC either manually from Start, Programs (or if you let it launch auto at install time). It should be buckin' like a bronco to attach to a project. At that point there's nothing internet for it even to deal with. That's what's so frustrating.

There seems to be something in Registry which is blocking or superseding whatever it is you are installing.

If you dare, run 'regedit', making sure you are at the top of the tree, run Edit,Find and type BOINC.

Look at ALL instances of BOINC and delete them, except for where you have the downloaded file saved.

Once this is done, exit 'regedit', reboot and run the best defragger you can get. Then reboot and reinstall BOINC.

At this point, you would have eliminated all instances of BOINC except for the one you just installed.

Choose 'Single User' as your default.

It is better if you have it run at Startup and give it access to your Internet connection. If you plan on running an app which will require your RAM, you can stop BOINC by going into your Windows Task Manager and having the program stop.

Time I got soem sleep; I'll be back tomorrow. If anyone has any further ideas in the meantime, please post them to this thread and I'll pick them up; thanks for the time people are spending on the problem.

Message 205153 - Posted: 7 Dec 2005, 0:03:10 UTC - in response to Message 205127.

SO the problem remains: when you launch BOINC Manager, the window opens up, in the lower right it say "connecting to localhost" and you're dead in the water.

Correct.

That issue is internal on the host and has to be resolved before any DNS/DHCP issues. When you right click the B in the system tray, how are the run and network properties displayed?

When I right-click on "B", I generally get no menu - on the few (once or twice) occasions I've got a menu, none of the options draw a reaction.

On the affected Win98 machine I'm gathering you can ping 127.0.0.1 without issue.

I can.

Just grasping here: do you have a C:\\Windows\\HOSTS file?

I do now/again - it seemed to have got lost the last time I reinstalled Windows.

If so, open it with Notepad and verify that the first entry says 127.0.0.1 localhost. If you do NOT have a HOSTS file, then copy HOSTS.SAM to HOSTS. If you DO have a HOSTS, but 127.0.0.1 isn't the first entry, then make that so, save it (it'll warn you about text only formatting - that is o.k.), and rename it by truncating the TXT extension (allow the existing HOSTS file to be overwriten). Reboot. Let us know how you get on with that.

No dice; still no reaction from BOINC Manager.

The paramount thing needing to be established is a "connected to localhost" between the manager and the daemon. THAT is a fundamental aspect pertaining to interprocess communication of Windows itself.
