Message 208439 - Posted: 9 Dec 2005, 22:56:16 UTC - in response to Message 202419.

Sorry, I've encountered another problem. I followed the instructions from BOINC-Wiki for enabling the SETI graphics with a service installation, but when I get to the end of the procedure, I get an error message:"BOINC Manager-connection error. The password you have provided is incorrect, please try again". The instructions don't mention entering passwords, and the only place that has an option to do so is in the Log on tab for a single account only.

When I installed BOINC as a service, I entered the name and passord of the Administrator account I was using, and can confirm that I'm using the same account.

Thank you

Also, regarding your concerns about using the Administrator account.

You just need the administrator account to install BOINC as a service in this case. Seti/Boinc will then run under any account. To then run the screensaver, you have to change the account it uses to the 'local system account'.

I can't tell you about the security implications of BOINC using the 'local system account', but you will already have anti-virus programs, firewalls and many other services running from that account anyway.

You can go to your account on the Seti Web site and change your general preference.
Do work while computer is in use? to NO
Then
go to Preference menu in Boinc and select Run based on preference.
go to the Project tap of Boinc highlight Seti and press update.

Quite frankly, it's not really necessary, since Boinc runs at such a low priority that anything you do with the computer will force it to give up any or all parts of the CPU you need. I've never seen it slow down any operation on my system.

An earlier query and answers has suggested unistalling and reinstalling, then selecting BOINC as a service (and I've found the instructions for changing the setting so the graphic SETI screen saver works).

My question is about "service". Does this mean that the program is always on and running?

I'm afraid my computer is already pretty slow, so I want the program to run only as a screen saver, and for security reasons I don't want to use administrator accounts for routine business on BroadBand.

Hope you can help. Thank you.
