my celeron is 2.6GHz and is taking about 7 hours per unit. so for a 733 i guess 12-13 hours. Well, it depends. An optimized client would probably bring Nicks crunching time below 2 hours. And I don't really know if Nicks Celeron is doing other hard work while crunching Seti WU's. "Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?"

Don't forget your Celeron is PIV based (and sucks big time) and the XBOX uses a PIII/Celeron (PIII based) hibrid. It they would run at the same speed, the XBOX would be faster then your Celeron :) Join team BOINCstats |

I Crunch on a Linux/Celeron 2GHz system with Harold Naparsts great, optimized Seti client. It uses 6,200-7,500 CPU seconds per work unit, which is around 2 hours real time. Even with the standard (non-optimized) client, crunching time was "only" 5 1/2 hours. Ah but the Xboxes only have a 733 MHz Celeron so it would seem 10 hours is not a bad estimate after all. I wouldn't expect them to be all that great either... probably take over 10 hours per work unit but I have never run a Celeron so this number should probably not be trusted :) I Crunch on a Linux/Celeron 2GHz system with Harold Naparsts great, optimized Seti client. Thank you...I will refer back to this thread if and when I can get someone to run there soon to be useless xbox's on this project. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data! I did NOT authorize this belly writing!

This is interesting....with this new XBox 360 that has come out I bet there are a bunch of the old versions that can be put to use. If someone can explain in a 1.2.3. for dummies how to do this I'm sure I know a few people from the internet that use those things that would become new crunchers. I don't own one of those xbox's so haven't a clue how they work. I looked through http://www.xbox-linux.org/ a little more and it looks like that is about as "1.2.3." as you are going to get. It isn't a simple task - you need specific (older) versions of software and a few gadgets to make it work. I wouldn't expect them to be all that great either... probably take over 10 hours per work unit but I have never run a Celeron so this number should probably not be trusted :) has anyone considered the power of the xbox360 3 powerpc cpus at 3.2ghz each From what I hear they are having one heck of a time cracking it to do anything other than what Microsoft lets you do. But eventually I'm sure it will happen. I borged a G5 for a while at work. It was certainly a decent cruncher although not quite the "supercomputer" that some of the benchmarks and specs lead you to believe. Granted, some of that is probably due to poor compiler optimization but I have learned to take all specs with a grain of salt :) A member of The Knights Who Say NI! the app only uses about 25 MB, so why the 64 MB limit? Because the swapping when the graphics were viewed was causing major problems. It was a decision that was not just picked out of the air but one that has caused some grief. Supposedly the new enhanced Seti will not require as much base memory but will take much longer to crunch. It will take much longer whether the memory is small or not, more Science and all. It will just sense low memory and disable the ability to see the graphics.

Warp10, I don't know what these fine folks are smoking. Grab a linux boinc for P3 from Crunch3r. Then, download the optimized Harold's version 3.4 Seti for Pentium 3. Crunch!

the app only uses about 25 MB, so why the 64 MB limit? Seti can't use all 64 MB. The OS will be taking up a fair chunk. Then there is the BOINC core client with its ~2 MB and if you run the GUI then there is another 12 MB or so (depending on platform of course). Add in any other services the host happens to be running and you may not have enough memory to use without causing things to swap. And swapping is the ultimate enemy of performance. hey i used to run seti on a p3 with 64 mb of ram it was like 750MHz. so i think i will try IIRC there were problems with the graphics display when your RAM was too small. Regards Hans |

It was done to fix some problem on a specific platform. Sorry I don't remember the details but yes, it was possible to do seti/BOINC with less than 64 MB of RAM at one point. Sorry to disappoint you, but the old Xbox only has 64MB. Doesn't mean it won't work on other BOINC projects. I let my old 500 MHz crunch away at predictor work units. It keeps up a fairly steady pace. But it is true that celerons don't do exceptionally well at number crunching. Still might be kind of fun to try :) I now it is possible to run a cheap version of linux on XBOX. Don't know about a "cheap" version of linux but I know you can get a free version :) I have never owned an xbox but a quick google search let me to http://www.xbox-linux.org/. As for running BOINC on it: if you get linux installed I think the standard BOINC client should work since the CPU is for the most part a standard celeron. Only one way to find out for sure: Try it! I got that stack of xbox(8) at my place. I now it is possible to run a cheap version of linux on XBOX. Can i load a boinc client on that? How hard it will be for somebody with no linux skill to make that appen. Sorry to disappoint you, but the old Xbox only has 64MB. You won't be able to use it for seti, unless you upgrade it's memory (requires soldering of smd parts, ugh...) The Xbox CPU (Celeron) isn't exactly fit for crunching, too. Regards Hans P.S: At the very moment the Xbox360 has Linux, I'll grab one :o) |

Just think about it, all those xbox will become useless during the next year, all that prosecing power will go to waste would be nice to do something about it. XBOX LIVE : WARP 10 |
