trying to connect always. Open menu 'commands' and set the check near 'network activity suspended'. When you want it to connect, change the check to one of the other options. Then in 'projects' tab press 'update'.

Thanks I'll try that. Still seems more trouble than the old system but I'm sure I'll start to see some of the advantages of BOINC soon.

In General preferences in "your account" you can set your preferences for :

Confirm before connecting to Internet?
(matters only if you use a modem) no
Disconnect when done?
(matters only if you use a modem) no

set them the way they work for you. You must update the project before they take affect.

go to projects page, highlight "setiathome", click "update"

I'll hold of doing this. As a general rule I don't like anything on my computer to be able to access the internet without my permission.

I've already set my general preferences to have it only access "the network" (does that mean the Seti@Home network or something else?) once every two days but that seems to have made no difference to anything other than causing it to download large amounts of workblocks with short term deadlines that I would likely miss even if I left my computer on 24 hours a day.

You'r right: It doesn't affect the trials of BOINC to get a connection.
This parameter sets the amount of work BOINC is trying to keep.
BOINC will adapt eventually. It can not know how many hours/day you have your computer running at the beginning, but it will make allowance for that eventually. Thus it is always a good idea not to increase this parameter too much at a time.

You can prevent BOINC of trying to connect always. Open menu 'commands' and set the check near 'network activity suspended'. When you want it to connect, change the check to one of the other options. Then in 'projects' tab press 'update'.

Pretty much every day (often several times) the BOINC manager flashes up a box telling me it need to access the internet to perform some maintenance and telling me to connect up, open the BOINC manager and do what is necessary.

When I do connect up and open the BOINC manager it is far from clear what is necessary. Presumably I am missing something.

Ideally I would like to make this operate in a non-intrusive way and only access the internet when it needs new data (i.e. the way to old Seti@Home program used to do it).

I've already set my general preferences to have it only access "the network" (does that mean the Seti@Home network or something else?) once every two days but that seems to have made no difference to anything other than causing it to download large amounts of workblocks with short term deadlines that I would likely miss even if I left my computer on 24 hours a day.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Must admit I'm getting increasingly tempted to remove (or at least suspend) BOINC for a while. I really don't want to spend the time I am spending trying to make it work on a project where, fundamentally, I am volunteering my resources to help others.
