Message 195508 - Posted: 26 Nov 2005, 15:42:35 UTC - in response to Message 195494.

I'm finding that out. I keep rebooting, running one/all three programs (ad aware, spybot, and CCleaner), but it just comes right back. I asked wife to get the config builder/restore CD's when she was out that way today.

I did the search, there are utilities out there that help:
Major Geeks
SpyBot (utility from the same people)

Hope this helps!

MJ

Try HijackThis to stop it from starting. Also try CWShredder further down on the site. (CWS = CoolWebSearch)

Hey Tony.

You might try booting into safe mode, and then run the cleaners. They likely can remove more, in safe mode, since nothing starts up.

Also if using Spybot Tony you might want to also use the in program browser immunization feature. Also I go a step further and use advanced mode for immunizing my hosts file as well. Spybot S&D will also lock the hosts file from hijackers.

My 2 cents.

BTW, I know this is OT but I just want to say that I admire the help you have given to people. I think that Tony should be voted in as user of the day! Show of hands please.[Edit): I just cast my vote.{Edit)

Sincerely,

Tony

Nick Fancesco is a local Rochester, NY computer guru. He has a column in the local paper and (I believe) a radio program. He constatly tells people to dance the "Security Tango" for getting rid of virii, malware, spyware, etc. He has a website at http://www.securitytango.com with all the particulars and links to the places to get the tools. He even tells you how to get rid of coolWebSearch using something called CWShredder.

Definately worth the time to check it out.

Me? I run Linux. Besides, I don't dance. Just ask my wife! :-)

Hey! If you're cool enough to run the Penguin, you don't need to dance!

:-)

Cheers,

running spybot as we speak. It's found 479 "infections" so far. still scanning, thanks

Definitely run the "immunize" function in Spybot.

Also, look out for any "browser helper objects" in Internet Explorer. This is just too good an opportunity for some virus authors -- most BHOs are evil.
