Every time this thread comes back up, I still feel like an elf. But wouldn't that make Tony... ;)

Just like to say I'm still amazed at how well the volunteers are handling the influx of questions.

Well Done All!!

Do off-forum direct emailings count?

You're welcome and thanks for the feedback.

And yes, the American descriptions for the account registration and project attaching can be a little confusing... And they've changed it in the last day or two also!

Good to hear you're online.

Just because your paranoid, it doesn't mean people aren't out to get you...

The eyes have it! :-)

(Can't do the last one, no matter how many beers and whatever I'm looking at through those red-green glasses!)

Since I haven't seen my name mentioned (an no, I'm not really looking for accolades), but I have been accused of being sarcastic by another person recently, I can't help but feel that people may be referring to me when they are talking about bad attitude/sarcasm/unhelpful posts.

No... at least _I_ have never seen anything you've said that was "negatively memorable". I don't think any one person can be singled out as being "the" negative one. We ALL have responded to certain questions that hit our "hot button", in ways that we maybe shouldn't have. Some people just have more "hot buttons" than others. I just have a short memory. Insult me today and I'll be madder than heck, but by next week, I won't have a clue who you are. :-)

I think _everyone_ is trying really hard right now to let the insults, bad attitudes, bashing, etc., "slide", when it happens. I have been pleased by the fact that 99% of the newcomers are _trying_. Sure, there's the 1% who have "heard all about those elitist BOINC (*&^(*#s and how they hate Classic and Classic users", and show up already swinging, convinced there is some evil conspiracy to rob them of their right to run Classic forever. One of those can color your response to the next ten who are honestly trying to make it work, if you let it.

I think that right now there is too much traffic for anyone to be worried about holding a grudge against one username. In the past, we've had those "1%ers" who go on, and on, and on... right now, if those people are even still here, or others like them, they're buried in the noise.

I've seen a COUPLE of responses from "regulars" that I thought were SLIGHTLY "aggressive". But I'd say that ALL of the helpers have been doing a GREAT job this last week.

EDIT:: I'd like to add - I've seen at least two cases where someone came in as an "obvious 1%er", but was handled very well by a "regular", and is now a happy BOINCer. THAT is impressive!

OzzFan1, as somebody who's also been on those boards, I'd say a hearty NO, you're not one with those attributes. You've been passionate in defense of SETI-BOINC in the face of irate users who feel they're being pushed into a change they don't want. But your information has been accurate and helpful (and I think I've stolen some things you've written for my own answer file <g>).

I believe the prime bad attitude/sarcastic/helpful posts have not been on the Help Desk boards, but on Science, NC and Cafe, and by people who have not been on the Help Desk boards.

My only contributions are never found on this site, much of my work goes into the BOINC WIKI, and in P.D.B's absence we've got to keep on top of the versions. So I have assigned myself a job as mananging the new features and updating the WIKI to the latest versions so that Classic users are not confused.

Since sometimes I can be a dunce, I'd like to know if I am considered to be one of the "bad" helpers that isn't really helping. I don't take hints very well, only straight-forward information. Hurt feelings can always be overcome, but I'll never know unless someone is honest with me. I don't want to make the situation worse, so if I'm not helpful, please let me know.

If you do feel I'm unhelpful, before you tell me, I'd like to say something in my case, to show where I'm coming from (copied and modified from a different post of mine):

I believe people need to accept change. If they want to come on here and vent their frustration, fine, but when they post things that are incorrect assumptions about BOINC, they should be corrected (even if it has nothing to do with their problem. See below).

See, if those complaints go unanswered or uncorrected, then someone else with the same misperception will think they're right. To correct them is to explain to them what BOINC is, and how it works, and will be on display for anyone else that likes to read the complaints just to feed their own feul of hate for the program.

See, I don't sugar-coat anything and I don't beat around the bush. The knowledge is offered as being helpful, regardless if they deem it so, because information is neutral, it's what they do with it that counts. They can either complain that I'm harsh or they can realise that my information, if taken right, can be extremely helpful. If they don't, then that's their choice, but my intention is to help them by pointing them in the right direction.

So, there you go. If you still find me guilty, please let me know.

...The Classic converts can be foul certainly, and ask the same question over and over again... but the new breed of helpers look to be handling the situation brilliantly.

Job well done Tony and the rest :)

What new breed of helpers?

Its the same bunch that keep those with the bad attitude peered into submission!

Anyhow, its easier to just ignore all the frustration verbage, scan for the key words, and then vary a cut'n'paste as required.

(We can have the flame-fests again when the dust settles in a week or two ;-) )

Just as impressive is Rom's rapid response for the new Boinc versions to clear the main Windows problems/workarounds!!!

Great work those on the help forums,

Regards,
Martin

I agree... thank you to all the helpers. You are all doing a great job! It is so very refreshing to see helpers actually taking the time to help, rather than simply posting sarcastic one-liners to the Classic folks. Perhaps those folks with the bad attitude have been asked to sit this one out since they do nothing but harm BOINC's reputation.

The Classic converts can be foul certainly, and ask the same question over and over again... but the new breed of helpers look to be handling the situation brilliantly.
