This is probably a very elementary question. When I try to add the seti at home project I get a screen asking for my proxy configuration. What's that? What is my answer?

A proxy server is a computer which some people use to connect to the internet (for security or speed reasons). You can usually check your proxy settings in Internet Options (in internet explorer: extra -> internet options -> connections tab -> LAN settings).
In most cases the defaults (all blank) will work.

Thanks for your response. I appreciate your help. This is my home computer and I am using Mozilla Firefox as my browser. The blank defaults are what I see in internet options - no proxy settings whatever. I still get prompted when I try to add this project for proxy settings. I like the idea of helping with this seti project but I would like to agree with some other postings I have seen on this bulletin board that this new software appears to make it rather challenging to participate.

I've read some other people are having problems with this. In one thread the user was able to connect only after a cold boot (turning the computing off completely and then back on).
I'm not sure what's causing this, but if you still can't connect, can you please open a terminal (start -> run -> 'command' for Win95/95/ME or 'cmd' for WinXP/2000) and enter 'tracert setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu'.
you should see the final two lines as

*some numbers* uc-berkeley.demarc.cogentco.com [66.250.4.74]
*some numbers* 66.28.250.125

This will check if can connect to the seti@home server at all.

The proxy dialog popping up is caused by the connection to the server taking too long. What version of BOINC are you running?

On two distinct Windows PCs, I found this was caused by some strange registry problem.

Read my posts under "Can't connect to SETI", posted only a few hours ago.
