Installed the BOINC software, trying to "attach the project now". I enter the url i got from the seti@home account email, press next, and the screen changes into a proxy/socks setup window. Press next again (leaving blank since i dont have any proxies) but keeps coming back to the project window. Using windows 2000 fyi. I must say the classic was what you would expect from a project needing YOUR help. If it takes too long to get it working, people will just stop trying. And this Q&A thing... replies tend to not make any sense at all?? Are you sure the replies actually are related to the question? |

I'm far from perfect, don't worry. I'm not really bashing just got a little frustrated. The Q&A thing i mentioned... It's the sorting on the replies that is a little weird... Anyways, i got the latest one, 5.22. I click the "projects"/"attach to project" and it prompts me for the URL. (doesnt ask for account key although the wiki says otherwise). I click next , i get this animation about connecting, next thing you know i get a next page with proxy/socks settings to fill in. When i try to leave it blank, it just keeps coming back. I tried filling it in, i do have a proxy i can use, but that doesn't work either. According to the wiki it should have benchmarked my system on first start, but it didn't do that either. Could it be my install that just failed somehow? I downloaded from the boinc website directly, today. The message tab doesn't have any information (i am guessing that is the log i see people post here?) Screenshots of the wizard: http://users.pandora.be/interface/boinc/ |

What messages are you getting in the 'Message' tab? I thinking that you might be seeing something like, 'cannot connet to seti@home', then 'Cannot not connect to Yahoo', and finally 'can not connect to google'. This indicates that the program can not make an internet connection, so it is asking for a proxy to try. This sitution normall occurs when a firewall is blocking the program. Your firewall needs to allow 'boinc.exe' and 'boincmgr.exe'. If you have not install a fireall, likely Windows built-in firewall is causing the problem. Go into the 'Control Panel' and look for 'Windows Firewall' You need a second life? Seconlife.com |

I'm glad I didn't answer as I first intended... I felt quite offended (for all of us 'helpers' in here). But that cleared up now... the sort is quite weird indeed. (I bet that Paul is working like mad on it!) So we must try to find out the hard way. The fact that BOINC doesn't show anything in 'messages' preoccupies me more than the 'proxy' thing which might probably be solved when we get BOINC to do something. Here just two wild guesses (most of us are not yet very experienced with version 5.2.2): Is your firewall not blocking boincmgr.exe and boinc.exe? Both must be able to pass. Make also sure that that boincmgr can connect to localhost: 'file' -> 'select computer' -> enter 'localhost' at 'host name' and leave blank 'password'. :-)= Greybeard All about BOINC: BOINC-Wiki (by Paul D. I'm glad I didn't answer as I first intended... I felt quite offended (for all of us 'helpers' in here). But that cleared up now... the sort is quite weird indeed. My apologies. I've done quite some volunteering on websites myself, should have known better. Is your firewall not blocking boincmgr.exe and boinc.exe? Both must be able to pass. i am using windows 2000 and don't have a personal firewall. Make also sure that that boincmgr can connect to localhost: 'file' -> 'select computer' -> enter 'localhost' at 'host name' and leave blank 'password'. When i do that it says 'connection failed'. Still nothing in the messages window. The more i think about it the more it sounds like something stupid is missing. All i did was install it. The installer asks if i want to run it immediately, i did. Next thing i do is click the attach project thing. There is nothing else i need to configure first, right? |

Are you online while trying to attach to a project? If you have dial-up and log off to save on toll fees, it won't be able to find an internet connection and will probably send you to the Proxy/SOCKS window. |

About message sorting. At the top right of this screen you can adjust them to 'oldest first' etc. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data! I did NOT authorize this belly writing! |

This morning when my pc booted, BOINC for some reason automatically prompted me to attach to a project. I filled the seti stuff in and it worked neatly this time. I did reboot yesterday just to make sure if that wasn't the problem. Anyway, it attached fine now. I am not sure what was going on. I am pretty confident that my installation in in good shape, but i am in a loss of words what went wrong here. For my part, this case is closed. But you still may want to check out a BOINC installation on Windows2K (if that was the problem?) Thanks for the help, although it seems to have solved itself. |

I'm having the same problem with one of my computers. The other one updated without a hitch. My firewall has Boinc & Boinc Manager listed as an exception and I can connect to the internet ok, so I'm really confused. I guess when all else fails, start over from the beginning. I do like the new release 5.2.2 or at least 50% of me likes it. lol |

My firewall has Boinc & Boinc Manager listed as an exception and I can connect to the internet ok, so I'm really confused. I don't know about you, but I found a way to reproduce the problem. Basically, each time I COLD boot, boinc will be able to connect. Every time I reboot the machine without turning it off, BOINC gives me a 'Connection failed' with nothing in the messages window, and there's no way to get it working but powering down the machine and then starting it again... I have no clue as to why, but it is perfectly reproducable. If there's anything I can do to help solve this, let me know. |

I had this same problem - Attaching only brought up the proxy window. Disabling my firewall didn't fix it. The message window was blank. I tried uninstalling and installing 4.45 but nothing happend when I tried to attach. I uninstalled, rebooted, then reinstalled. Works fine now. |

My setup is a little strange. At home, I have a Windows XP Home machine that shares its Internet connection (always-on ASDL) through the small home network. The second machine is running Windows 98 (2nd ed) and used to run BOINC 4.something, which told it to upgrade. So I installed 5.2.8. Uninstalled th old version after being told to do so, then installed. Ran BOINC. Tried to join http://setiathome.berkeley.edu : although Proxy and Socks were turned off, got prompted in an infinite loop. Rebooting doesn't help. Gave up. The third machine is running Windows XP Pro and shuttles between the home network and the work network. Installing 5.2.8 caused the exact same problem. Even a cold boot failed to help. What the gleep? Weird thing is the XP Pro BOINC kept the old climate job --although BOINC manager says I'm not linked to anything, the screen saver shows the climate job running?? I do not dare install 5.2.8 on the XP Home machine as yet... Daniel U. Thibault a.k.a. Urhixidur a.k.a. Seigneur Bohémond de Nicée URL: http://www.bigfoot.com/~D.U.Thibault |

The second machine is running Windows 98 (2nd ed) and used to run BOINC 4.something, which told it to upgrade. Up to here, your networks sounds like mine: WinXP Home on the main box, WIN98SE on the second, always on cable connection and a home network. I believe the problem you're seeing is just of timing. You're trying to update at the same time as many Classic users are moving over to BOINC, and Berkeley's server is congested. That's why you're seeing the proxy prompts, BOINC sees a delay in connection and thinks you're behind a proxy. Two easy things I've seen recommended are to reboot after installing but before connecting, and have patience. Also, one user reports the following: Log onto your SETI account on the internet. After and only after you have logged in open Boinc. Now you can connect to the project and the proxy and socs prompt will not show up. Hang in there, it'll clear eventually! MJ |

Follow-up: BOINC is not really failing to run properly, it is just giving the impression. It seems to be slightly confused by the existence of the previous version's xml work files. To make a long story short, after a reboot (which may be optional), the screen saver kicks in and the next time BOINC manager is run, it properly recognises its settings. So, the advice is: after installing BOINC, do NOT run the "Join Project" wizard, but do check the Option settings. Let time run its course. Tweaking the screen saver settings to force it to kick in faster may help. Daniel U. Thibault a.k.a. Urhixidur a.k.a. Seigneur Bohémond de Nicée URL: http://www.bigfoot.com/~D.U.Thibault |

Further follow up: The Win 98SE machine is systematically failing to connect to its localhost, and it has no firewall (it relies on the Win XP Home "hub"). What gives? Is that on startup, or later? Can you go to File > Select computer, enter localhost with nothing for a password and have it connect? BOINC Manager may be trying to connect to the Daemon before the daemon is ready to respond, Win98SE being as slow as it is to boot up. MJ |

The Win 98SE machine is systematically failing to connect to its localhost According to the Task Manager, BOINC is up and running, and still an attempted connection to localhost fails. I must point out that this machine has also failed to recognise itself as belonging to *any* project. What's the purpose of the "Connect to computer", anyway? Could I use this to have the Win 98SE machine use the Win XP machine as its BOINC server? Daniel U. Thibault a.k.a. Urhixidur a.k.a.
