Message 182089 - Posted: 25 Oct 2005, 8:15:06 UTC

Apparently Berkeley servers blocked the IP of cruncher-stats provider "SETI@work".
On its homepage, the admin claims:

Sorry, no more update because Berkeley has blocked our IP address ... :(

That's really a shame, as SETI@work is the "purest" stats page I tried out so far, and very useful to me to check on which days my and my teams' account perform which way.

Is there a reason? How do I reach Berkeley staff to whine a bit (I do not have much hope they read this here, but maybe someone does who might ask them or tell me a better way (where) to ask).

Thanks!

That is interesting interpretation of what they actually say at seti@work:

Oct 24, 2005 ... However, for unknown reason, our server is unable to connect to BOINC S@H site at all (not even ping the site) whereas there is no problem with Classic S@H site. As a result, our BOINC stats cannot be updated at the moment.

SETI@Work site has been around for years with no problems, I would be surprised if Berkeley blocked them without warning/notice.

SETI@work Statement:

Oct 24, 2005
We had a hardware failure on Oct 23 but was unaware of it until later in the day. Thanks to Claude's quick response, the site is back online. However, for unknown reason, our server is unable to connect to BOINC S@H site at all (not even ping the site) whereas there is no problem with Classic S@H site. As a result, our BOINC stats cannot be updated at the moment.

*it does not say they had their IP blocked.

I don't know what site you are looking into, but on my SETI@work BOINC team stats page it says clearly:

"Sorry, no more update because Berkeley has blocked our IP address ... :("

I quoted that before. I repeat, I do not refer to any SETI classic stats that SETI@work may also host.

Yes... but if you go to the main page of set@work you'll see the news item that Jason has posted.

What's the IP address of the machine being blocked from connecting to our web servers?

For the record, I've been actively blocking IP addresses who are effectively DOS'ing our servers with continual requests of the nature:

while (1)
wget stats page X
parse X
end

..with apparently no sleep clause or anything. I will continue to do so, since we have daily XML stats of everything anybody cares about at:

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/stats

We understand that statistics are an important part of maintaining user interest, but apparently there are people out there who (a) would rather parse 20000 html pages than 1 xml file, or (b) want to make sure their user stats are up to date by slurping up our web pages 10 times per second, or (c) feel the once-a-day resolution of statistical data is too rough. Sorry - our web servers can't handle it. You're gonna be blocked. Maybe someday when we have tens of thousands of dollars to spend on a bank of new web servers we'll let this activity slide.

Yep, that's the one. That IP address alone was causing our load to jump from 3 to about 25. Nobody could get through, packets were getting dropped, etc.

I'll unblock you now, but can you please start parsing the XML stats I mentioned instead?

As a compromise, could seti@home request the stats page once or twice an hour? That should satisfy the severe seti addicts and not hose the connections to the rest of the user community...

No need to - the xml stats are updated once a day. You can find out when exactly by looking at the index page:

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/stats

If you got the most recent one, don't bother uploading it again.

Thanks, Matt - but it's not my site (nor the site of any other contributor in this thread, for that matter, if I'm not completely mistaken).
But I will mail the SETI@work admin about this thread!
Thanks again.

thanks Matt

the XML side is open for everyone, but...

which is no good, when a Server or a side is looking every Minute or so for new Stats, like..., yes

there is one Reason for to update the Stats on XML BASIS, not so heavy Load at the Boinc Servers, as of Classic, the Seticlassic Server is updating every HOUR...

and on BOINC we have to look at the XML Data which is updatet every 12 Hours..

i think, ore every 24 Hours..

all sides with a realtime Progress, Stat updatet every hour, and all counter will have this Prob i think.

Greetings from Germany NRW
Ulli

Nope. Not a member of that site. But I thought if I could help, then why the heck not :)

Thank you Matt. I am the owner of SETIatWork.com and I am truely sorry my site has caused such heavy traffic load to S@H webserver. My server had a hardware failure earlier causing the hourly update processes to piled up. After the server was put back online, all the accumulated the processes immediately rushed to retrieve the pages thus causing such heavy traffic to S@H webserver. Again, I apologize for such oversight and mischap.

To prevent this from happening again, I will start using the XML stats.

Thanks to the help of everyone in this thread!!! I really didn't expect my problem to be resolved so quickly. I will start working on the script to use the XML data.

Fixed it for you, you needed to use img tags to show the gif
98SE XP2500+ @ 2.1 GHz Boinc v5.8.8

And God said"Let there be light."But then the program crashed because he was trying to access the 'light' property of a NULL universe pointer.

Narf - that was on purpose, I'm not exactly allowed to hotlink that...but no worry, admins that do not use the possibilities to disable hotlinking to other sites shouldn't blame others anyway. :-)

But thank you anyway.

Hi Matt,
I've sent you an e-mail some day ago (to mattl_at_ssl.berkeley.edu) but I havn't see an answer.
I'm writing here for the question of IP blocking on the webserver of Seti@home.
Is the IP 217.133.4.201 in the list of blocked IP? If yes, can you unblock it?
It's the PC of my friend, where run a little script for pending credits, but only for our team (than not many traffic is generated). If you say that it's not good, we can turn off the script, but the IP block must be removed to access the website from that PC and visit the site to manage the account.

Thanks in advance Matt.
Sorry for my english.

Bye!
