I'm glad all works now. I'd never thought about a threadmaster being in use...

OOPS! Apologies! My Fault after all!

(but not completely)

I was a bit worried about cpu overheating, though i use a desktop with a good fan and i've heard people say there's no problem to overwork the cpu for weeks on end.

but still i was worried, so i downloaded threadmaster. the configuration seemed tricky and i didn't succeed at running it, so since a lot of people seemed not to worry about cpu warming up, i decided to skip it.

everything was doing fine boinc ~95% cpu.

then i forgot about it...

what happenned is that i probably rebooted my computer for some reason or another, and somehow it started working, out of the blue.

i was so desperate when i couldn't figure out what wrong, i decided to select a few system processes and end them and since 'thread' was a term i knew, and it seemed to be at least a bit relevant, i decided to kill it.

boinc quickly boinced up again to full use of my dear cpu.

http://bednorz.uni2.net/anyland/threadmaster/threadmaster.htm has instructions on how to permanently delete threadmaster, which all in all seems like a precious little tool for those in need.

so, sorry...

i was overwhelmed by the quick help, it warmed my heart, thanx a lot!

you are welcome to my site, http://thaye.net

once again, thanx, and back to boincing ;)

Once again, thanx, and sorry.

I tried reconnecting without the firewall checkbox, but it's still the same.

when i try what you say, check the firewall in the network conenction, i get a window with 'settings', not 'configurations', and there's no 'exceptions', only 'serviecs', 'security logging', and ICMP, and none of the options under these menus seem to have any relevant thing.

because i tried reconnecting without the firewall, and still i have this problem, i'm at a loss.

hey,

first of all, thank you very much for the immediate help!

unfortunately, i don't have a 'windows firewall' on my control panel , nor can i run wscui.cpl from the start->run prompt (which is what i read in the windows help should get me to the firewall).

Maybe i should add that i have norton internet security, but it's been on for the last few weeks and boinc was full power, and anyway i disabled it and it doesn't help. could the problem lie elsewhere?

sorry for the hassle, just a well-meaning newbie...

OK, indeed, as you have Win XP Pro SP1.

To add a program in the build-in Firewall, you need to go to "Control Panel" "Network connections" and select the LAN. Once you are there, select "Properties", go to the tab "Advanced" and there check "Firewall...". Once this is done, at the bottom right of the tab that is open, you will be able to select "Configuration". From there on, you can use the way I described earlier.

That might be the case, because when i rebooted there was a install windows message or something, which i closed down. but how do i check the firewall? how do i restore the permissions for boinc? and is what you say posssible when boinc does work (10-20%).

i'm very computer literate, i used to work as a programmer, but i don't know much about these topics.

thank you very much!

To add a program in the list of Windows Firewall, go to "Control Panel" and there click on "Windows Firewall".

Select the tab "Exceptions" (translation from Dutch). At the bottom left of it you will see "Add program". Click on that button, wait until all the programs are loaded and choose at the bottom right "Browse".

By browsing, go to the folder Boinc. You will see boiccmd.exe, boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe. Double click on boinc.exe, click on OK and repeat the same for boincmgr.exe. You should have now boinc.exe and Boinc Manager in the exception list of programs in your firewall of Windows.

Before closing the window, verify that both programs are indeed checked.

Did your system do a windows update?

Then you'll have to check the firewall - it seems that with the latest update the permissions for boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe have been removed.

hey!

i started running boinc a bit more than a week ago and progressed fine, the cpu was running at 90%+ most of the time on boinc and i ran many different projects and my credit progressed.

a few hours ago, system idle process started using up most of my cpu (70-80%), and boinc has just a little bit left. i tried updating the project preferences (which i didn't change anyway), tried rebooting, tried killing the system idle process (windows xp won't let me), nothing works.

what's going on?

i tried looking for an answer, couldn't find an adequate one.

help would be dearly appreciated, i've become a boinc addict.

thanx,

gady b
