It doesn't look like a test wow signal...anyone knows what it is?

Hi.

Since noone else chimed in, I'm guessing :o)

What you have marked red looks like a spectral line to me.
Things like this are caused by gas clouds that absorb parts of the spectrum of
any background radiation that passes through them.

This spectral line would have no relation to the gaussian you found, though...

I was hoping someone that really knew would chime in. I have seen this before and it was explained as some kind of terrestial interference, but I forget the details. I think it was some kind of non-radiating body passing through the beam.

The images you posted are interesting indeed except for the area in which the search was conducted. (check that 1.4200000000) That, according to SETI, is the line where you will get a cascading pattern not unlike the one you have posted. Odds are pretty good that it's a test WU that was sent to you. I've gotten that one too a while ago and I know the feeling of "oh my god!" that you get initially. Keep crunching, though, and if you get the same thing and at a different part of the spectrum, let us know!

Keep crunching!

Its a well known artifact in the way the data is generated.

It's the common mixing trough centred on exactly 1.420... GHz. I'll let others explain further ;-)

this might be of some help here.

That is no help whatsoever and is completely off-base!

There must be a link out there somewhere where the s@h data analysis trough is explained.

The graph he/she has circled is a WU of 1.420 GHz.
1.420 GHz = The Freq. Spectrum as allocated by the FCC
= radio astronomy 1.420 ghz
= hydrogen maser resonators 1.420 ghz
Source

or
1.420 = Detection ranges (LY) for a 12 foot diameter amateur
radio telescope SETI system, operating at 1.420 GHz.
Source

or

1.420 = The Hydrogen Line

As for the gaussian I do not know what that is. it could Be anything from noise to a Pulsar or anything. But they were both returned nonetheless. We just have to wait if Berkley says anything :)

OK, the original threads on the seti-classic forums have been long lost in the periodic scrambling and restarts for those forums. A text snippet is:

>>> David Woolley on May 14, 2003 at 05:07
Valleys that appear as downward diagonals on the extreme left or right edge on
sub-band 0 or 255 are artefacts of the processing system. It takes data
1.25MHz either side of a centre frequency, but cannot handle the exact centre
frequency, so that apppears quiet. The line becomes diagonal as a result of
the de-chirping shifting the frequencies by an amount that varies across the
work unit duration.

They will have a slope that equals the chirp rate.

>>>

Hope that explains a bit more.
