If this isn't life on Mars, what is it? Life on the Moon...

20 November - EVA Apollo 12-2 - Moonwalk to Surveyor 3, which had landed two years before. Recovered parts of Surveyor 3 which seemed to show that Earth bacteria could survive for that period in space and be revived....

I think that "remoteexplorer" has done a very good job on pointing out how interesting these amazing images are, and has build up a very strong case by analyzing the features in the images.
While I think that just from the images it is not possible to proof that these structures are _living_ beings, it seems quite clear that there are big structures and that the idea that they cast shadows is very reasonable. And if they cast shadows, we can learn a lot about their size and shape by analyzing their shadows, as done by "remoteexplorer".
[....]
Finally, I would like to ask whether the exact same dunes have been photographed more than once, e.g., at different solar angles or at different seasons. Seeing the same objects at different times would give us even more ideas what they might be.

Hi remoteexplorer, still there? Maybe there's a new hope for you.

Did they ever discover what the mysterious 'face on mars' image actually was?

Just curious... ;)

Intersting but unconclusive. Is it face or do we just imagine it as a face? Do we have a metric for this?

good god I hope not to suffer those rob brats and dogbytes on this. They are better off on mars, I'd love to see them eek out a life there rather there than here!

Check Out This Mars Photo

Here is an interesting Mars photo, taken from the NASA Web site. You may have to right-click the image placeholder (then select "Show Picture") in order to view it.

If you peer downward, toward the shaded area (color provided by NASA), you see this:

And, more closely...

To view this image from the source yourself, take this link: Nicholas Crater H

And, if that doesn't astound you, there is always this action photo recently captured by the "Spirit" rover:

The silver lining to this reality is that our advanced counterparts, obviously, practice freedom of speech, even in the open context of demonstrations. (Whew!)

Thanks...

That would explain why it wasn't on the top of the list of places to be explored... ;)

Believe me, I would have wanted that to be evidence of some form of other intelligent life more than anyone. But 'want' doesn't make evidence. It seems that upon closer inspections those things were just 'figures in clouds' so to speak...meaning...they weren't what we made them out to be with our minds....

Actually I agree with Robert

It's easy to "imagine" images or any other pattern in data, it's different to disprove data, but this can always be done.

Is there a face on Mars - well why would there be. I think there could have been a face on the queen of england but how many scientists follow that thread?

Please don't dilute this thread with petty bickering. There are some folks here trying to have a serious discussion.

Life got in the way for a while, but I'm still here.

I have searched quite a bit for images of the same objects at different times... the problem is most of the images are taken at 12:00 local time in order to maximise the light. I did another search in January and managed to find a couple good ones, but I haven't had time to post any thing. I'll try to get to it this month.

I loaded the movie on to YOUTUBE.com this week. It has a better resolution than the .mac movie, so if anyone wants to watch it, go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AtC4Woxi7M#

If you haven't seen my other information on this possible evidence of life, GOOGLE: "ringsonmars" or "moundsonmars" and you'll find the sites.

ALTHOUGH it is highly unlikely that any of us "Joe Blow"'s will find solid evidence for life in publicly released photos, (when the specialists somehow missed it) this is science being practiced! Why shouldn't anyone put the evidence to critical testing and questionning?

Keep on looking DocORock and RemoteExplorer! I, for one, will be very interested in the things you find!

The best pic of Mars I saw showed the world-famous "Golden Arches" just on the horizon ;)

Hi remoteexplorer, still there? Maybe there's a new hope for you.

Pictures (Mars orbiter looks down on rover) from Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter with a pretty impressive resolution - maybe up to 4 ppm (I mean pixel per meter)?

I found out: some images are "29.7 centimeters (12 inches) per pixel" and "the image was taken at a local Mars time of 3:30 PM and the scene is illuminated from the west with a solar incidence angle of 59.7 degrees, thus the sun was about 30.3 degrees above the horizon", so apparently no need for "images ... taken at 12:00 local time in order to maximise the light".
