Here is a link that describes what these things do (I.E validators, transitioners, etc). Remember this is a general description for use by projects to help them understand how things work. It varies from project to project, for example seti has more than one validator.

Thanks Matt,

I can confirm upload and reporting 3 units 10 mins ago, two of them have even been granted credit. I've also received three units to crunch.

Matt Thanks for the new numbers on the status page

Shouldn't it be work units ready to send, work units in progress
not results???

AND
results waiting for validation not work units waiting for validation

not sure about some of the new ones

I'm thinking work units are what is sent to us and results are what we are sending back ??

Nope. It's all correct. The fields were misleading in the previous version of the page. So for clarity:

Results ready to send: For each workunit, there are 4 new results that are generated that are then sent out to 4 individual users

Results in progress: Users still haven't sent their individual results back yet.

Workunits waiting for validation: A workunit gets validated when enough results are returned and their signals match. You don't validate singular results - you validate a workunit's worth of results. So when this queue was up to 1.25 million, that meant about 5 million results were waiting on credit (it was a lot worse than people thought).

Workunits waiting for assimilation: After a workunit is validated (and it has a singular canonical "correct" result), this result, which represents the workunit, is waiting to have its data input into the master science database.

Workunits/Results waiting for deletion: After the canonical result representing the workunit is assimilated, the original workunit file, and the multiple result files returned from the clients, are now waiting to be deleted.

Terrific explanations Matt, Thank you! You might think about copying this right to the server status page for people who skip this thread (or the message boards altogether)

The WFV queue is draining at least as fast as it did when the scheduler was shut down! It may be near zero in the next hour!

It looks like Matt and crew has got it fixed...

Thanks to the Seti team for their persistence.

I'd like to know how other users are getting work. I had my results upload last night. Twelve hours later they were finally reported. I have been unable to get even one work unit. The best I get is a constantly increasing retry interval.

If you've uploaded and reported all of your results, you might try the "Reset project" button... (if they haven't been upload and reported, you'll lose the results when you reset).

Which computer? I see two on your account: the Linux has 30 new units today, the last about half an hour before you posted. The Windows machine hasn't connected since August 13...

I just looked at my computer's result page

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=1361192

It lists thirty results as as sent. I don't have any of them.

I just reset. Waiting to see what happens.

They're the same computer. I'm running linux now. I don't have any of the listed work units. Somehow they never got here.

The confusion seems to be the term "result" is being used for data that has not yet been processed. But this is the nomenclature that has been in use for as long as I have been following the project, and changing the term for un-processed work to something else would be inconsistent and confusing for both the developers and participants who understand and work with the current usage of those terms.

Cribbing from another message from the Question & Answer boards (thanks to David Knittle for the answer):

When the project thinks that it's sent you work (as shown in your results section) but your BOINC client doesn't have them on your machine, you're a victim of "ghost" or "phantom" WU's. It is a problem that can appear now and then, especially when the network traffic is very high, such as after a service outage.

The reset may help, I hope so. The fallout to look for will be in two weeks, when those ghosts reach their deadline. You'll see your daily quota drop by one for each deadline missed. It'll recover quickly, though, as it'll double for each result successfully returned.

If the reset doesn't help, please post whatever error messages you're seeing on the Messages tab, they may give a clue. (You might want to start a new thread, either here or in the Q&A area, so this doesn't get lost!)
