and point being? The points obvious, just remove your blinders. If the objective is still not obvious, just reach around and try the Helen Keller method. Account frozen... |

There are many good economic explanations about why prices rise in anticipation instead of on the downfall of the equation.... so called anti price gouging legislation just makes it worse. What u read was just current events. Not good theory. Not even any theory. Stop the insults. I told you this was like telling a 'creation scientist' to go read a book on evolutionary theory. It will never happen.....just too committed to the 'faith'. I respectfully withdraw from this thread and won't be reading or posting here again. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! There are many good economic explanations about why prices rise in anticipation instead of on the downfall of the equation.... I did read up on it. I suggest you do the same. Every state in the US is looking to pass legislation to prevent the "Price Gouging" that occurred after Katrina. Even Congress is looking to do the same. It does not take a genius to see that now that the gas is once again flowing from the Gulf, we got assistance from other countries, the President has permission to release the Strategic Reserves, and all the States are gearing up to pass legislation that the gas prices are once again coming back down. If the Gas Companies knew ahead of time that they needed to raise the gas prices 60-90 cents why did they time it right after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, if not to gouge what they could from the a needly public. They could have waited till the crisis was over. We did land on the moon; however, you need to come up with a better analogy. If you are so tired go to sleep. Maybe when you wake up you will be back in reality. I'd rather speak my mind because it hurts too much to bite my tongue. American Spirit BBQ Proudly Serving those that courageously defend freedom. |

It is if many on this thread board were to start arguing that man never landed on the moon and it is all a big conspiracy.....all the 'BIG people' ARE OUT TO GET US... You tire me. the same thing happened in the recent UK panic buying spree when the fuel protesters threatened to blocade the depots again... as soon as panic buying startted the fuel companies wacked prices up to over £1.10 a liter the highest they have EVER been here... as soon as the protest turend out to be an empty threat then it all came back down to a penny mroe than it was before.. (not what it actually was notice) this confirms taht at the chance of making a bit of extra dough teh pertrol companies will jump at the chance |

OK Mr. Ecomomist please explain why the price of gasoline rose so dramtically on the fuel already in a gas stations 10,000 holding tank the day after Katrina struck in states not affected by people evacuating. I guess the Chinese needed it to fuel the increase in Wok usage. I suspect there should be some rise in price to help deflect the price of recovery, but those price increases should happen weeks if not months in the future and not the day after the storm. What we have seen is corporate greed!! Did you manage to see that Exxon announced record profits once again with-in days of Katrina landfall. i know somone who in the UK fuel crises a few years back ran his desil car on a mixture of streight vegatable oil (bought directly from the supermarcket in deep fat fryer sized drums) and a little turpentine substitute to thin it... her reported no major problems apart form the wierd smell though this mixture was not used for long enough to accertain wether it was damaging to teh engine.... anotehr problem is taht it is illigal in the UK as it contravenes fuel Tax regulations.... not that he had any trouble as all the police cars only had enough petrol at teh time to respond to 999 calls (911 in USA) |

I hate to point out the level of frustration I have when I read so many posts by so many people ordinarily dedicated to scientific methodology who resort to blaming 'big oil', capitalism, government conspiracies, etc and wind up demonstrating such high levels of ignorance of basic (and well available) economic principles. Like cutting taxes and spending money like a drunken sailor (ex-National Guard airman). Where did you study economics? Account frozen... |

I don't believe I'll change many people's minds and I lack the time or patience to begin to attempt to refute much of the nonsense and 'mystical' crap I've read here about oil prices.... Flame me if you want, but I won't take the time to point to the links. A bit like pointing out to a religious zealot good books on evolution against 'creation science'. A waste of time. Just a few quick thoughts to ponder which you can find elsewhere if you are not that 'zealot'. Fuel oil competes with gasoline (petrol) which competes with Natural gas which competes with coal fired power plants and petrol powered power plants. Knock out one or 2 natural gas pipelines and you would see a similar rise in gasoline prices. Much of the upward pressure on gasoline/fuel prices stems from developing world like China and India....as they go through Industrial revolution their fuel consumption is skyrocketing. It is a global market. United States hasn't built a new refinery in about 25 years.....any interruption shortens supply. Lastly, in large part, speculators as they are called, largely serve to actually stabilize prices. They tend to take on much more risk than is justified from their own positions. Savings passed on to you as they get burned more than they profit. Also....seeing a boost in prices allows capital to flow into areas where it will in some part be used as capital investment. Preventing much higher prices in the future. Hogwash to 'price gouging' rhetoric. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data! As everyone knows, truck drivers tend to know just about everything. I talked to one this week that swears that adding a small amount of acetone improved his mileage, from 5 mpg to 8.5 mpg. This guy has a better computer system in the sleeper of his truck than I have at home. He gave me this link to look at. It's where he got his initial info on the subject. |

In case u r interested: One Diesel-injection Van had to have modified 'nozzles' The rest run on chip-fat blend (which is apparently quite freely available - Bio-Diesel) with no modifications (so he says) In fact, he re-iterates that a standard diesel engine will run on any sort of oil. |
