well, Enjoy the new WU's guys and gals, but like many here in south Louisiana, I will most likely (more like certainly) be without power for at least a couple days, starting Monday... :'( But hey, i won't be contributing to the rush when the scheduler comes back..... that's provided i don't get back on-line before SETI... and anything seems possible right now.

Talk about a double-whammy. First the major up-set of SETI being out for you and the rest of us. Now you have a real storm heading your way. It sort of puts the SETI problem in perspective.

I wish you luck with the coming storm.

well, she's here in Baton Rouge now. Rains getting heavy and winds up to about 30 MPH, gust higher. It's time to turn off my computer now, so i'll just say 'see you space cowboys' and log off.

The weather people are spinning the word that hurricane force winds will be possible all the way up to Shreveport and Jackson. Awful lot of lean-to shacks between there and the coast -- tremendous potential for loss of life. Everyone out there take extreme care ...

Hope that your farm is still there when you get back, but important thing is that you get to a safe spot. Hope that the house is not to close and built out of wood as so many are in the area.

Well it's 7:30PM CST here in Jefferson Parish (western outskirts of new orleans), LA., just south of the center of Lake Pontchartrain. At this time we still have electrical power. Watching the local television news they just said that the storm is turning more toward the north which would put my area on the western side of the storm, which is a good thing. I stayed thru Hurricanes Betsy and Camille back in the 60's, and then worked thru the 70's, 80's and 90's as a local law enforcement officer. This is the first major hurricane that I didn't have to ride around in a police car. I am planning on staying as long as possible, but if it gets really bad, I am going to a major local hospital about 8 blocks from my house, which should have power as they run their own generators. At that point, I will shut down my meager SETI farm and leave home. They just announced that the storm winds have decreased to 160MPH and the barometric pressure has risen slightly, indicating that the storm is weakening. I will be reading the boards (to keep me occupied) and watching the local coverage for as long as possible. We probably wont have power once it goes out, for several days, so I will be out of touch with the project until power comes back online. So, I wont be here for the project recovery expected in the next few days. As soon as I can, I will come back and catch up on all the news that I missed when electricity is down. Be well, wish us luck and pray for us and our families.

I was born in the rain by the Ponchatrain beneath that Louisiana Moon
Don't mind the strain of the hurricane, she comes 'round every June.
That high black water, she's the devils daughter,
she's hard and she's cold, and she's mean
Nobody's taught her that it takes a lot of water to wash away New Orleans

Stay safe, Wolf, and all in her way!

I hail from Tampa Bay. This time I was spared. I got lucky. Last year I got all 4. I kept SETI crunching all 4 times till the power went out. This isn't a storm to play around with though. I'm sick of all the news channels and thier new dopplers and all the hype they spread. Chicken Little comes to mind.
My heart goes out to Major and Outlawolf. Keep your head down and your spirit up. If you need a place to stay then my place is yours. this season ain't over yet. I may need a place to stay too before it is over. You guys in the pan handle have taken the brunt so far this year.
i plan on sending a care package to help in the aftermath( as most Floridians do now). Drop me a line at setithz@gmail.com after it is over. I'll do what I can to help.

For people wondering what they can do from a distance, the American Red Cross Disaster Services group are prepping for the aftermath. The Miami area already has disaster relief teams in place. Most of these teams are volunteers, but their transportation, living and working expenses still need to be covered, not to mention the material assistance that they're giving to people in the affected areas.

Please consider donating, either to the national organization or to your own local chapter.

To all the impacted Southeasterners, stay safe. You'll be in our thoughts and prayers. I've got family down Jacksonville and Gainsville way, and it looks as though they might catch the edge of it.

Never been in a hurricane and never want to be.

Never been in a hurricane and never want to be.

I have. It was scary.

... but pretty much, it's a question of whatever you grow up with. I grew up with Earthquakes. "Solid as the ground we're walking on" isn't as much of a truism to me.

Earthquakes don't upset me because I know what to expect.

People who grew up with Hurricanes or Tornadoes generally know about them, and don't get that excited. They know what to do.

I'll still be thinking good thoughts for those trying to stay above water.

It's 4:40AM CST Monday, August 29th and I still have power. Now that I've said that, it probably will go out in the next 15 minutes. But the latest information on the local news channel says that Hurricane Katrina is moving North and possibly a little Northeast, which would definately put the eye to my east and most of New Orleans as well. The winds are still at 150 MPH but the way it looks is that the eye is not so perfectly circular as it was and the west side of the hurricane looks weaker. We've had hurricane force wind gusts here (76 MPH), but everything so far is more or less intact. We're not totally out of the woods yet, but it sure is looking better now than it did about 6 hours ago. Keep all of us in your prayers.

Wow!! I don't really know where to begin. First and foremost, I am alive. I've had a few really rough days, but I'm back...at least I am able to read the forums somewhat.

Let's see....um, when I last left you, it was about 4:40AM CST August 29th. My power went out at 6:24AM CST. Sustained hurricane force winds in my neighborhood reached 140 MPH, but surprisingly I had very little wind damage at my house. All told, when the winds died down on Monday afternoon, my total damage was a few roofing shingles from my roof missing and one 5 inch by 7 inch pane of glass from my bedroom window which faced north.

I thought, well, ok, no electricity for a few days; I can deal with this, no big problem. But 6 hours after the hurricane passed, the water in Lake Pontchartrain, which was pushed north during the hurricane, came back south....with a vengeance. In less than 2 hours I was waist deep in water. Luckily that's about as high as it got in my neighborhood. But it was enough. I lost everything. My home was waist deep in water everywhere; my brand new 2005 Chevy Monte Carlo SS (temp tag still in the rear window) had water over the dashboard and when the water receded, still would not start.

The shelters in the area, would not take animals...and leaving my 11 year old blue Persian cat was NOT an option. So I stayed. My next door neighbor, and her dog, had stayed too...for pretty much the same reason. We listened to the radio day and night and heard about the 17th Street canal breach and the looting that was going on in New Orleans a few miles away.

To make a long story short, when the waters went down some (4 days later), one of the Deputies that I had trained years ago, happened to come around to check on my house and saw my car in the driveway. He gave me a lift to my parents’ house (about 5 miles away) which too had been under water, but not as bad as mine was. My parents, in their mid-70, had evacuated the night before the storm hit, driven out of town by my younger brother. I was able to use my key to their house, get my Mom's spare set of keys to her car, drive it back to my house and took a couple changes of clothes, my neighbor, our animals and got out of Louisiana. It took 4 days driving, a round-about route as many roads and bridges were wiped out by the hurricane, and at times gasoline was scarce, but finally we made it to my sister's house in Charleston, SC.

I'm using a computer that I built and gave her 2 years ago for her birthday to read the forums and catch up on what's been going on the past week and a half. I'm going to try to convince her to let me run a few work units on it when she isn't using it.

Tomorrow I will be going to the Red Cross shelter here in Charleston to see if I qualify for any assistance. From what I've heard, it will be at least a month before power, clean drinking water and other services will be available in my town. But it will be longer until businesses open again and any "commerce" starts up again. So, I'm homeless, car-less and currently jobless. I'm afraid it will take me a while to recover from this one.

I've been crunching WU's for Seti@home since June 23rd, 1999, on one machine or another...non-stop, but Katrina ended my streak on Monday, August 29th, 2005 at 6:24AM CST.

Has all this killed my spirit....NO!!! I'll be back. I'm going to work here in Charleston for at least the next month, while the town is rebuilt. Maybe in a few months I will be able to buy a few parts and build a new computer and start crunching again.

Will I go back to Metairie, LA. to live? Absolutely. It's my home; I was born there, I served my community there for 20 years and I will return there and live and work there again some day. It may take me a while, but I will get back there and rebuild my life, my home and will be back crunching work units again.
