Just came back from a 2 week break, having loaded latest version of SETI before I left. It's been number crunching away but I can see the logo in the bottome left corner of the screesaver must be static as it's burnt into the screen!! This is the first time i've seen this in years - what's the point of a screen saver that destroys the screen?? Must I remember to switch the damn thing off if left for an extended period??? Come on on guys...

If anything can leave an image in the phosphor after only 2 weeks then that screen is stuffed anyway.
As to why anyone would leave their monitor on for 2 weeks, i have no idea.

Older CRT it is, and on all the time as it's part of an admin set-up to a production FAX server - I'm now wondering if it's past use included this same version that I was not running - so did'nt see the burn until I 'topped it up'

In any case - original observation stands - what's the point of a static screensaver?

None, but on the odd occasion i've turned it on it's been moving. If the PC was to lockup while the screen saver was on though...

Yep, the main part of the saver is animated but there is a logo bottom left that's static and it's the white lettering thats causing the problem...may just turn off the option :-(

To be fair, I couldn't find anywhere on the BOINC site that indicates their software is actually a screen saver (despite the fact that the graphical portion is launched by the Windows screen saver API).

If you have a monitor that is incapable of being managed by the Windows power settings, then I'd advise using the Go To Blank Screen option in the screen saver settings for a quick (1 minute) transition.

Hmm, i thought that we got over the little burn in problems that older screens had.
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

The burn in problem may be coming back. Especially with plasma screens it is a problem again.

The SETI 'Screen Saver' has also burned in on my HP-2335 LCD monitor. I do not leave it on continuously but it runs a lot. The part that burned in is the "SETI@HOME" text in the lower left. This is the only part of the 'screen saver' that does not move and it is causing burn-in. This is NOT a problem only with old displays. The HP-2335 is not all that old. The SETI 'screen saver' needs to be re-writen so all of it moves around. The static text is causing problems.

It's known to the developers, but they aren't going to change the screensaver for the moment.
What you can do that is edit the seti515.jpg file in your BOINC\\projects\\setiathome.berkeley.edu direcotry. Edit it so it shows totally black. Don't delete the file or anything, as it'll only be downloaded again. But editing it is possible, save it back as the same name and the screensaver will show without the SAH logo.
