I am having a problem getting credit for W/U's I have already done. Since there have been a bunch of outages lately, my pending queue keeps growing each day. I am up to 23 W/U's that are pending at the moment and that does not include what I am crunching now. So it appears I have not been getting credit for quite sometime and my RAC number is suffering because of it. When is this going to be straightened out? Susan R. Anaconda_469 |

We have a backlog so be patient..... Semper Eadem So long Paul, it has been a hell of a ride. Park your ego's, fire up the computers, Science YES, Credits No. |

Hmm. and how long is gona take this problem? ... I also have over 90 units pending credit We don't know ... on the status page the "waiting for validation" queue grows and grows and grows ... ... but don't worry, your credits won't expire or declared as invalid. Berkeley surely will find a solution for that. My 165 WUs with 2573.33 pending credits are still waiting too. since 29-Jun-2004: |

Some answers can be found in this message. One of the developers has written in that message and explained a little. Right now there is an issue with large directory structures. There should be some Technical News in the next day or so explaining more. My movie https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/502242 |

We have a backlog so be patient..... I think everybody on this SETI project has been patient... I may be mistaken but I thought it said in the Server Status section that you guys are running nothing faster than p2-450 machines. kosh: Sun D220R (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 2 GB RAM) klaatu: Sun D220R (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 2 GB RAM) koloth: Sun D220R (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 1 GB RAM) kryten: Sun E3500 (6 x 400MHz Sparc, 6 GB RAM) galileo: Sun E3500 (6 x 400MHz Sparc, 6 GB RAM) milkyway: Sun U60 (2 x 400MHz Sparc, 1 GB RAM) penguin: Sun D220R (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 2 GB RAM) philmor: Sun U10 (1 x 350MHz Sparc, 1 GB RAM) sagan: Sun E450 (4 x 400MHz Sparc, 2.5 GB RAM) Even if they are duals or quads or better, maybe since SETI has become so popular you should consider upgrading the lot of them to faster machines. The hardest working machines should definately get upgraded. These machines were fast enough in the past but not anymore. Considering that BUS speed and cache size is so important, I think these old 100MHz BUS speed machines should be swapped out! What would it take to get these old machines replaced? I thought I should get my 2 cents in as I have over 800 Work units to be processed! We have a backlog so be patient..... Ouch. There's someone that compares apples with pies. The main problem here is the Ethernet between these machines and the directory structure on the harddiscs. There are enough CPU cycles free on these machines. |

@SuperG You got the money to upgrade these machines? This is a not for profit service, and it's got a budget. People have donated items, etc. Kind of hard to get blood from a turnip, as the saying goes. My movie https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/502242 |

We have a backlog so be patient..... That’s actually funny; although, I prefer lettuce to the salad...you know...less fattening...:) I realize that comparing these Sun systems to P2s might have been a bit off but I suppose that I should have made the post more geared towards the actual age of the servers. I think I may have faltered there too. I have older Xeon units running as “doitall†servers in different businesses too and they can handle the workload quite easily. If SETI is getting backlogged due to directory structure and Ethernet then what will it take to get these issues resolved. It seems every time I am checking status or pending credit, I am reading about some failure that is really testing you or about how the scheduled outages are getting harder to recover from. If it takes longer to recover than the time between outages then you might need to tap Sun on the shoulder again or even ask Intel for some donations. It is nice to see that you actually do have a server that is faster than 440MHz even if it has Opteron CPUs. How long would it take to re-create the directory structure so as it does not slow you down and…can you fix your Ethernet issues while this is taking place? I think most of us know that there are a lot more factors involved than just CPU speed here. If we all know that then why does it take so long to implement solutions? We know we need bandwidth, CPU power and Storage etc. I know very little about the inner workings of SETI but I know enough to look ahead and formulate a plan to accommodate the expectations and demands of tomorrow. Kind of like a game of chess…always plan a few moves ahead or more. Anyways, I was not trying to offend anybody here. I hope that what I have done is more like create a desire to do better. It’s easy for 1 SETI cruncher to get impatient and for that I apologize. Maybe some of us out here in crunching land might be able to lend a hand or even pass on some good ideas. @SuperG OK...so money is what we need? If we have 250,000 people crunching packets out there...could we ask that they donate $0.50 a year for the cause. That sounds like $125,000.00 worth of upgrades to me. I think that some of us might even appreciate the work SETI does to actually donate more. Maybe that would create a "For Profit" service. I'm not an accountant so I don't know. As far as people donating Items..I looked at the sponsor page and SETI has sponsors like SUN, NVIDIA, QUANTUM and HP. To me that sounds like you guys have several home run hitters in the line up. Maybe SETI could ask for some upgrades to more than just their servers... I enjoy having my machines crunch packets for SETI. I do beleive that 1 day we will come into contact with other intelligent life in this universe. I just want the search to be a smooth one. Besides...who is to say that E.T. life isn't already here on earth? SuperG Boinc Wiki "Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds." -Albert Einstein |

Have you noticed that no matter how many people keep asking this question, there are always more. Well, I'm not being snotty or anything, but, some of us (probably quite a few of us) realize that complaining isn't going to change anything. The backlog will go away whenever it goes away. And, since I don't really care about my RAC (not like it's really high or anything) I'll ask this question. Is there anyway to throttle your bandwith, so that packets travel out much slower compared to the rate of inbound transmission rate (e.g. a tricycle compaired to a ferrari). Also, it's too bad there's no way to use parrallell processing to do validation (i.e. instead of some computers crunching work units, have them crunch the results from other users. You'd just have to make sure that no personal information was transmitted. Maybe, there'd be a way to simply assign ID numbers to data sent to the computers doing the validation so no personal information could be intercepted.) With the hundreds of thousands of users attached to this project, a tiny percent of them (maybe 2 or 3 thousand) could do the validation. With a little extra coding into boinc it could be made into feature that would allow any computer connected to the project to act as a validator. And, if demand for validations goes down. You'd need less computers looking at results. More would be able to crunch workunits. I guess it'd be sort of a "throttle" based upon demand. Of course, I'm sure that this has been thought of and is probably considered to be a horrible idea (or at least not practical). I dunno, I've just been thinking about your backlog problem recently and tried to think of possible solutions. We have a backlog so be patient..... While I do think that donations wouldn't be a bad idea, the problem is that there are a LOT of cheapskates out there. I'm not talking about you or anyone in particular. But here's the problem. If they required a $.50 donation in order for someone to participate a lot of people would leave (not everyone, I know.) And, if they requested that people voluntarily (sry for the spelling) donate money, how many people would? I mean, I've give a couple hundred dollars for the cause. But it's a drop in the bucket. And unfortuantly, having dealt with quite a few orginizations myself (I'm not an expert though) $125,000 has a way of disapearing. Where are the people who are supposed to support this stuff? Carl Sagan, NASA, private investors? OK, this ticks me off. A really, high end server would cost a couple mill, and add another 1-1.5 million for network upgrades (and ATM line would be nice). What's the budget for nasa this year? 16 BILLION dollars more or less. I thought nasa was all about finding life out there. If they donated just one-half of one percent of there budget, that would be 8MILLION dollars. I've never really like the governments view on seti. @SuperG Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. <img src="http://www.boincstats.com/signature/user_220108.gif"> +250 Classic Seti |
