I really believe that it wasn't what I said or the way I expressed my opinion over there yesterday, I believe it is more my affiliation with the Café. I agree with everything you stated. My biggest problem is with the way I think and type my thoughts. They always come out sounding serious. That's why I try to use my smilies [>:-) >;-) >:-(] to "soften the blow". I didn't on that first post in that thread, I was too annoyed and forgot. I don't remember if I had even been back in time to edit it. Oh well.... I e-mailed with Rom about an idea somewhat like yours about a sticky thread. We agreed that it would not work. Today, I have been working on a new idea. At this point, it's done, but crude.... I'm waiting for others to critique it before I let it loose on the world. As for my posts in that thread, I went back and re-read them and I REALLY don't see anything derogatory or inflamatory in them at all. If I meant them to be, they would have been BIG time. I try not to do anything like that on the NC board. I really see no need for those posts getting THAT many negative clicks. I just checked again. The one is still filtered and STILL getting negative clicks. Another is on the verge of being filtered. In my opinion, there is NO call for that kind of behavior. As for looking at someone's posting history, I don't, for the most part. If I'm looking for something specific and I can't find it in mine or conclude it would be easier in anothers, I will. Today I looked at one user's post history to see if there had been an exchange, good or bad, between myself and that person. Didn't find any. I didn't go into the history to get a "feel" for the persons thought processes, I don't do that, as a matter of fact. Well, this got kind of long winded.... >:-( Sorry.... It's also possible that newbies wanna get involved(help) in a conversation, but don't really know enough to speak authoritatively on a subject, so they post what they can. In all my years doing classic(jul 6, 1999) I never even knew about the fora there. Whenever it wasn't getting work I just waited. If it took a long time I got made that there was no news. If I'd have known about the fora then things would have been different. I can't say if I ever saw the "bulletin board", but even if I had, I'd be recalling a message board like the old ones in DOS on a 300 baud modem, and not been interested. I finally found the fora on Boinc/Seti and that's where I found out that there was a classic fora all along. ID: 144173 · |

The type of people who don't like the cafe simply won't look in here. I doubt they really know the names of cafe regulars. I just think you annoyed some people. Nothing to do with any other forum. However, (putting on devils advocate hat here...) since it is easy to look at someones past posts, if someone sees a post like yours on the NC forum, he/she might be inclined to look at your posting history. They will then see posts made in the cafe that they are extremely likely to take out of context. (I doubt they'll read the whole threads, just your responses) They will more than likely get a negative impression of you. Justified or not, you will always find someone that disapproves of anything you do. As for the news situation, I agree with the 'name in lights' theory. It's a bit like the people who just have to be the first to point out a new alpha (or pre-alpha) release. Perhaps a solution would be to have a sticky by Matt on the forum that mirrors the news text. (perhaps there's an automated way to transfer the text?) But since there is a forum preference to not reorder stickies, this isn't all that effective. Perhaps a link at the top of the forum page? But I also agree with Ageless. You can't make people read this, and I would be willing to bet that someone would still post the news even if there was a sticky or a link. Too many people in the world are of the opinion that signs (in this case, information) don't apply to them. They will never bother to even attempt to find an answer for themselves. They are the 'post first, look for answers later' crowd. ID: 144150 · |

Each board ie: NC, Café, etc. is a seperate forum containing all their own threads. I don't believe that, when the noobs come to the fora board menu, they actually read the menu or the information on it. If they did, they wouldn't seek help here in the Café. Just my opinion [for what it's worth].... I saw yet another thread here asking for help.... >:-( On your example question about coming here after being at E@H first, yes, I would and did when I first started with SETI/BOINC. I do read the information on menu pages and such and post on the appropriate board. As a matter of fact, for my first few months of BOINCing, I never came here to the Café. For the most part, I stayed on the NC board, reading, and posting only when I had a question or something else to say that I felt was helpful.... I have not, yet, gone to the BOINC Wiki site. I've been to Paul's first site a few times. I have clicked a few links to Wiki, in threads on this board, but they had nothing to do directly with SETI or BOINC. Or as Paul Buck says: We can't make people read the Wiki. On the other hand, maybe he bookmarks it every day, but forgets he did so. "I make new friends every day" kind of joke. ;) As for affiliation to whatever forum, all of these forums together are the Seti@Home through Boinc forums. They aren't separate forums. Just as there should be no difference between Classic and Boinc crunchers: We're all crunching Seti. Then there's the people who (mistakenly?) post in the "wrong forum". They don't need the show-off that they get. If everyone would just help them, that thread would drop to the bottom of the forum index real quick. And no, that's nothing against you (plural you) who feel I am talking to you, but courtesy and netiquette go both ways. Plus you ought to know the way to the Wiki by now. ;) Part of that is also because of the set up of other Boinc forums. Look at Einstein@Home. If you've first crunched E@H for 6 months and are only now trying Seti, would you know immediately where to post? If you had an urgent problem (and do know, all problems are urgent ;)), would you look for a posting manual first? Luckily my urgent problems are usually in the order of: "No file system found, please insert disk", so I wouldn't be able to post on any forums... but else... :-D I plussed you Siran. Ask Rob to add a scroller at the top of the forums, where the news from the front page will scroll past. Yet even then there would be people ignoring that. It's a no-win situation, Siran. :( I'm beginning to believe the no-win scenario.... I believe, that what Fuzzy Hollynoodles says, ["They are attention seekers and just want to see their name in the author column." {not verbatim}], is more close to the target. I was just in NC a minute ago and someone has created, yet again, ANOTHER, up/download thread! There's got to be at least 10 in the past month or so. I have noticed that some people, in NC, treat users, that frequent the Café, with a certain amount of disdain. It sucks.... Just because we have fun over here, doesn't mean we have nothing to offer or an invalid opinion over there. The Café was created for that reason, to have fun, to share stories, to whatever.... I really believe that it wasn't what I said or the way I expressed my opinion over there yesterday, I believe it is more my affiliation with the Café. I do have some names in mind of the people that minused me to hell yesterday. I'm not going to retaliate because that would LOWER me to their level of evolution. Let tham do it. But! Do it over here, and I will flame them even lower on the evolutionary scale. Now watch, this post will be minused before the day is out, guaranteed.... As I explained to Jim (Blaize) once, if I have to worry about that, I won't be helping much there. [Whine] I have to agree with you. Too many people create threads about a topic that already exists. I feel that the ones that create a [News From The Front Page] thread are just seeking attention. The event, in my post below, is a result of one of those threads. I have a couple ideas [one which I just came up with this morning] the other about a week ago, that might eliviate the multiple threads of news. This doesn't only happen on SETI, it happens on all the boards of all the projects I participate in. The idea, from a week ago, would encase ALL projects news, my other idea would be project specific. I just have to think about them for a while.... [FLAME] It pisses me off that some people sit and hide behind, the safety of, their computer monitors and click the minus rating button because they don't like something you say. You know who you are and I know who you are. In less than one day, in a different thread, I watched one of my posts, which was not derogatory or inflammatory in any way, get filtered because those of you, and you know who you are, are cowards and can't [or won't] say something face-to-face so-to-speak. I even relented and offered an apology [for simply stating my opinion about something] and ended my posting in said thread. And still, you minused me into oblivion.... I seldom minus anyone, unless they really deserve it, and only after I speak my mind. I plus people all the time, even those I've had tiffs with in the past. YOU, [insert your name here] SUCK!!!! Shiny like an Emperor and doesn't have the white stripe like the Gentoo. Must be an Emperor or just a generic representation of a Penguin...
