Has anyone ever heard about the SETI@home project being available for Apple's Xgrid distributed processing system? For that matter, as this is a basically a distributed processing community, can anyone here point me to a site listing XGrid projects that can be joined publicly like SETI@Home? Thanks. --------------------------------- Nathan Zamprogno http://baliset.blogspot.com |

Note to self also: When asking a question, and someone answers it, you should be thankful. Doesn't sound very Christian like to jump down someones throat just because they tried to help you. One of the biggest troubles with today's society. Note to Raithmir: Thanks for the link, I am also using XGrid on another machine that always had debacles with BOINC, and works wonders with XGrid. Your link showed many potentials for potential users. But I won't list the good ones here, someone may jump down my throat just for trying to help him obviously. Thanks Paul, it seems to be up and running again. Yep, Patience, what a virtue I am lacking sometimes. I really appreciate all your help and your ignoring of my slanted words sometimes, they aren't from the heart, but from the , well, can't say on the public channel... Thanks, take care. He wasn't talking to everyone. He was making a mental note to himself. Therefore it is appropriate to insert his own religion or beliefs into that statement. Actually, I was replying to John Wycliffe Christian School, who was very rude in that he/she asked for help, and someone gave it to him/her, and they subsequently told the helper that anyone could have done that. I was only implyin gthat this supposed Christian wasn't acting very Christian like. Especially since they are from a Christian school. One should be thankful when someone helps, regardless of whether the help is an obvious answer or it is the resolution to all of the wars on the planet. To me, Raithmir's response did help me, even though I didn't ask the question. And yes, I know that there are more Muslims in the world than Christians. Seems a pity to have to annotate someone as either, doing such only causes separation and the wonderful situation we have in Iraq, London, New York City, Iran, Korea, etc, lets just say, everywhere. didnt quite get that.... but I agree!! I think he's making a point about how pointing out what makes us different only serves to divide us. And about JWCS's question, XGrid is basically for truley multithreaded processes. SETICLassic and SETIBOINC are not truely multithreaded. BOINC can spawn multiple processes (that's why the new P4 chips crunch two units at once). So by trying to use XGrid you may only create more work for yourself. [case 1] 1. Install BOINC on 5 Macs 2. Attach to SETI on 5 BOINC clients [case 2] 1. Install XGrid on 5 Macs 2. Attach 4 XGrid Zombies to one XGrid Head CPU 3. Attach to SETI on 1 BOINC client Also, since each processor is working independantly (BOINC is not multithreaded) there is no speed loss during the processing itself but because each CPU is constantly in communication with the Head CPU and all communication is encrypted (I don't know how, but I'm sure it is) that will slow things down. So by using XGrid, you may be making more work for yourself and slowing down your crunching. And I'm not a Mac person so don't kill me if I got this all wrong. ;) /edit for bad html, ugh! 7,049 S@H Classic Credits |
